S20 REWARD.

It is not at nil remarkable, Out

very significant, that whilo our Government has made every effort, compatible with its honor, to secure an exchange

of prisoners of war.the rebels having displayed equal energy in preventing an exchange, by raising all kinds of objections and obstacles, in the caie alone of Major White, the captured Pennsylvania Seuator, do they urge tho objection

that " his detention is a service to the

Confederacy." Nor is it strange to us

that diiloyal papers justify the proceed

ings of the rebel authorities, and express the hope that all other Federal prison

ers, regardless of the date of capture,

may be exchanged before Major White.

As we said before, it is in this way the

rebels North and South play into each other's bands.

County Convention.

The Unccmditioiral Union Men of

Vanderburgh County are, invited to mee

in County Convention at the Court

House in Evansville on Saturday, Feb

ruary IZth, at 1 o'clock, P. M., for the

purpose of appointing delegates to the Union State Convention and securing a

more perfect organization for the ap Yroaching, political canvass.

tF Two or three days ago, we copied a paragraph which went the rounds of the . press in 1n06. credited to the Day Book, a notorious pro-slavery paper in New York. The paragraph, we are satisfied, is genuine, - and plainly expresses the opinions promulgated by the Lay Book at that time. We still believe the extract to be truly copied from the Day

Book, notwithstanding the impudent denials of political whipper-snappers who know nothing at all about the matter. We believe it to be true. 1st Because it harmonizes with other articles from the same paper and with articles in South Carolina papers,, from which the Day Book drew its iaspira-" tion. 2d. Because the quotation was copied by papers in different parts of the country at the time, commented upon and uevvr denied. -- - ' 3d. The Day Book itself has not teen proper to diiown the paragraph, but has gone still farther and continues to harmonize with the rebel press in eulogizing Jeff. DaTis and the constitution of the so-called Confederate States. When the Day Book authoritatively denies ever having published the sentiments attributed to it, we will be diapos. ed to refute its denial, or acknowladge our mistake not before.

Dr. Ezra Reed, of Terre Haute,

formerly of the 21st Indiana, has been sent to Camp Nelson, Ky., to look after

the welfare of the sick and wounded Indianians of the six months' troops now

in the convalescent camp at that place.

He took tricing a lot of 'sanitary supplies suitable for sick soldieis.

Dr. Reed is a good sample of the true Democrat. He was the particular friend

of the lamented Douglas, who was for

several months a guest at his house, and

he now shows his devotion to tho teachings of Judge Douglas by the most unswerving devotion to the cause of the eountry. The people will always delight to honor such Democrats. Abolitionist. The Terre Haute Journal, as published under the new editors and proprietors, who are open and avowed peace sneaks and Southern rights men, makes liberal use of the term ''Abolitionist," as applid to Union men. The editor, we are informed, is a fossil who last published a paper in Mississippi, and has not yet learned that the word "Abolitionist" is "played out" in the loyal States, and is now only used by rebels, traitors and negro thieves. Progress, Messrs. Dowling, Bailey and Jeff. Davis.

AUCTION HOUSE.

The Pope and Jeff. Davis. Most of our readers have read the cor

respondence between Jeff. Davis and the Pope, in which the reat conspiratory flahnted his personal piety so offensive- " ly in the face of Europe. The Pope, of course, addressed " The honorable and illustrious President, " iu terms highly complimentary. Indeed the two seem ,to have resolved themselves into an impromptu mutual admiration society Pope Fio iVonc, is an old maa andthere are many things connected with the Great Rebellion that he- don't un- ' derstand. The New York JPosi truly sap that if he bad been in full possession of tjbc history of the rebellion, and had fully understood the present aspect of the couflict, he might have made his answer somewhat more pointed and spec

ific He miht have said :

1.3

"Illustrious President, your prayers are on the point of bein rIost favorably answered. The ..peace which, as vou

itver, yrn httve been beseeching from heaven, for more than two years, is now at your doors. The strength of your govjerument is rapidly waning; your people are deserting you; thousands of those who at first supported you, see that they were misled; thousands of others who desired to remain true to the Union, and . whom you forced into rebellion, perceive the day of deliverance at hand. The Federal Government makes offers of peace to the Southern people, and, if you do not shut your, eyes to what others clearly perceive, you must see that they will be accepted, and the war concluded on that basis. In a abort time the carnage which you so pathetically lament will have ceased, and the people of the South, delivered from a usurpation which they were never asked to sanction, will be allowed to live in that peace which you profess so ardentlvto desire."

Gsst eatchVt-Foi; along time, nearly

ever since w Lavo held the city of

Memphis, General James C. Veatch, of

this State, has .been "commandant, and'

bow well he biffs done l is work may be judged from tho following compliment in the correspondence of the Washington Chronicle: "In General Jas. C. Veatch we have a true friend. He is un officer of unimpeachable integrity, snd makes just discrimination between the loyal and disloyal, winning the affections

of one and commanding the respect of

the other."

Feiekds or iny. Soldiers. A proposition has been introduced into the Michigan Legislature to give soldiers the right to vote wherever they may be stationed on the day of election. It will not surprise loyal men to learn that every Devwcral in that' body opposed it. The Democracy of Michigan . can't be much for McClellan, or else they don't think the soldiers are.

Government Trawspotatiox. We

learn from the Cincinnati Commei-cial that the lowest bids made for all the Government transpotation to the Cumber

land were by Captain John B. Ford, of

New Albany, Indiana, and B. C. Levi, of Louisville, for all the traaspotation

from Louisville and points beJow, and by John G. Isham, James D. Lehmer, John

A. Williamson, Thos. Gaff, and W. E Gibson, for all the buiiaess from Clncin

nati-i-the only question- as to an award

being between the above, and the bids of

David Gibson and Daniel Collier for the

entire business, and as to certain conditions in the bids of Messrs. Isham & Co. The award will probably be made to-day. The bids of Ford and Levi for the Louisville basiness is on ordinary pound freight from Louisville, forty cents per one hundred pounds; hay, forty-eight cents per hundred; wagons $ft 50; each head of cattle, $7; horses, $5; mules, $5 50; officers, one cent per mile, and from other points at 'the sarae rates, in proportion to the distance transported. The bid of Messrs. isham & Co. i3 for ordinary pound freight from Cincinnati to Nashville, forty-five eenta per one hundred pounds; hay,, fifty-five cents per

one hundred paaads, if carried on s teamboats; officers, one cent per mild; pri" vates, half a ceat per mile per man; horses, $8 tho entire distance; mules, $6 50; cattle, $9; wagons, $10. We regaad these rates as very fair and reasonable for both parties, and have no doubt it will prove a saving to the Gov. eminent over the system of chartering bop.ts by the day, and though it has re

quired much labor and difficulty on the part of Captain Swigart and Colonel Parsons to break up the charter system and secure so favorable a contract, yet we are confident it will in the end prove satisfactory to all parties. The bidders are men of means, business capacity and experience, and will, beyond doubt, execute the contract to the satisfaction of the Government as well as to their own profit. Thh Leader of the Ikon Clads. We had the pleasure, last evening, of taking by the hand oar friend Col John Coon, the intrepid and scarred leader of the iron clads the veteran and invincible 14th Indiana. We last bade farewell to Col. Coon the morning the glorious and immortalized 14th left Terre Haute, 1,045 brave and noble men, under command of the gal" lant "Kimball.

The then Lieatenant Coon has stood by the boys and shared all their dangers and perils up to the present, except when prostrated by honorable wounds, and has carved his way to the proud position he- now occupies by his own valor

ous deeds, and by those of the brave men he has the proud honor to command. The Iron-Clads, now only 200 in number fit for duty, arc as usual in front, nearest the enemy on the Raipidan. Sodden Death. We are pained to learn that Mr. John Britton, who it will be remembered met with a most painful accidentabout two week since, died very suddenly and unexpectedly yesterday at noon. He was slowly but favorably improving from the effects of his severe accident, and his friends ware encouraged with the belief that he would soon be well, and yesterday morniug he was feeling"quite well, when he was suddenly stricken with some fatal affection of the heart, supposed by the dectors to be neuralgia of that organ, which terminated his life in about thirty minutes. Mr. Britton had spent several years in California and Australia, and returned from the latter place about a vear agoHe was a gentleman of great energy of character, and was highly esteemed by a large circle of acquaintances and friends.
