County Convention.
The Unconditional Union Men of
Vanderburgh County are invited to meet
in County Convention at the Court
House in Evansville on Saturday, February 13rA, at 1 o'clock, P. M., for the purpose of appointing delegates to the Union State Convention and securing a more perfect organization for the approaching political canvass.
The Ball ill Motion. We publish this morning a call for the assembling of the Union League, on Saiurday evening next, and also for a County Convention on Satukdat, the 13th day of February. These meetings are called that Union men may get ready for the approaching political campaign. To the Union Leaders we need make
no appeal for a large attendance on Saturday evening next They are already alive to the importance of securing an early and efficient organization, and will, we have ne doubt, promptly respond to the call, and crowd Masonic Hall with enthusiastic and resolute patriots. In order that the County Convention on the 13th of February may prove a success, the Union men of the different townships are urged to take the matter in hand early, and make their arrangements to be present on that occasionWe suggest to them the propriety oi calling township meetings for the purpose of an interchange of opinion, and the stirring up of the lukewarm to the importance of sending large delegations to the County meeting. If these Union meetings are determined upon, and the Union n:en of our city notified, arrange
ments will be made to have speakers attend them who will discuss the questions
of most importance to loyal Americans at the present time. An early and efficient County organi zation will insure to the Union men a
glorious triumph in the State and National elections next Fall, and will enable
them, successfully, to aid our gallant soldiers in crushing the rebellion. For nothing will so stimulate our brave boys,
and dispirit and intimidate the rebels, as a display of enthusiastic confidence on
the part of tho people of the loyal States,
and of a dete rmination to sustain the
Government until its great mission of
saving the Un:on is accomplished.
Jtfiy Some of the Democratic papers complain of the call issued for a State
Convention on the 22d of February, be
cause the invitation is extended to the
" Unconditional Union Men." They in
sist that the Republicans are not Uncon
ditional Union Men that they are for
the Union only upon the condition that slavery be abolished throughout the rebel States. They maintain that Unionism is not unconditional unless it is for the
Union with slavery retained and perpet
uated in all the Southern States.
Slavery in the rebel States no longer
has anything to do with a man's Union
ism. It is a barbarism of the past It no longer has an existence. In law and
fact, every negro is free to go whereso ever he listeth.. At this time, TJn
conditional Unionism means nothing
more than the adoption of any, every
and all means for the suppression of the
rebellion, and those thinking and feeling thus, are invited to attend the Union
Convention and participate in the form
ation of a Union State ticket
Organizing. The outrages and
villianies attempted by the Confederate Democracy of Vigo county, have aroused the Union men of that county to lively action, and they have already organized
for a vigorous campaign during the
coming summer.
Last year they increased the Uuion majority in that county more than 500 votes, and this year they propose to wipe out all that remains of Confederate-Fernando Wood - Vallandigham - VoorheeB-Peace-shrieking Democracy, aal have the land purified. Among their Executive Committee we recognize the names of several both German and American citizens, who ware earnest supporters of Douglas in I860, and who are now as earnest supporters of the Administration. The young men of "glorious old Vigo"
have taken the matter in hand, and will
make the ball roll with a will.
Will not the unconditional Union men
of Vanderburgh county imitate this glorious example, and organize at once and
work with unceasing energy until our
County and District is redeemed. o
The Evaksvillb Union, This new
German Daily, made its first appearance on Monday afternoon. It is larger than the old Stoats Zeitung, and being in
new type, presents a more creditable ap
pearance. It starts off with a good subscription list, and, inconsequence, is a valuable advertising medium, of which

our business men will not fail to prove. fiS y
The Union is edited and published by Emil BiscHorr, well known to the citizens of Evansville, as an enterpris. ing business man.
In politics the Union is, as its
name signifies, thoroughly and radically for the Union. It conscientiously be
lieves that the Union can only be pre
served by the extermination of slavery,
hence it argues; Away with slavery that
the Republic may live.
We extend a cordial greeting to the
Union, and wish it long life and great
prosperity.
The South Bend Reyister says
Northern Indiana presents the names of James Moore, of Laporte, for the office
of Clerk of the Supreme Court, and of
Judge Wm. C. Hannah, of Laporte,
Daniel D. Pratt, of Logansport, and Jas.
S. Fraser, of Warsaw, for Supreme
Judge. The Register vouches for all of
them as good and loyal men.
-The Cairo (111.) News urges the
name of Gen. John A. Logan as a ean. didate for Governor of Illinois. General
Logan's name is a tower of strength,
and as the candidate of the Union men would carry the State by many thousand majority.
Religious. The Indianapolis Journal
says there is a general prosperity in the
various churches in that city.
Roberts Chapel (M. E.,) has closed a
protracted meeting of eight weeks du
ration, in which time there were one hundred accessions to the church, of
hom seventy were converted. The
church is in a high state of prosperity.
At Wesley s Chapel (M. E.), a pro
tracted meeting was held for two weeks, in which there was a general revival of religious interest and some conversions.
The two other Methodist churches in the city had also enjoyed a " season of
refreshing from the presence of the Lord." The Presbyterian churches have experienced a steady growth and an increase of religious interest The Second Presbyterian church congregation have purchased a handsome lot and will erect a large church edifice upon it during the summer. The new Baptist church has been par-" tially finished, and the vestry is ready for occupancy. The Baptists have the largest Sabbath School in the eity. A daily prayer meeting is held at the Soldiers' Home, under the auspices of the Indianapolis branch of the United States Christian Commission.
The Next Presidency. The following letter from Speaker
Colfax explaius itself :
House or Representatives, January 19th, 1864. J To the Editor of the Washington Chronicle-.' v i O a. a 1J J . . i" I notice that the Star announces this
afternoon that " Speaker Colfax has declared in favor of a second term for old
Abe." Will you allow me a brief space in your columns to say that I have expressed no Presidential preferences whatever. Supported for the position conferred on me by the House by Union members, North and South, East and West, of all shades of opinion, I have not felt it becoming in me to participate in any Presidential movement, in favor of or against any one of the gentlemen spoken of as candidates. And, while replying frankly to those who asked me, that the popular feeling seemed to be manifesting itself strongly in favor of President Lincoln's re-election, I have always stated that it would afford me
gratification-, in the private life, to which
1 intend to retire at the close of the ptcb1ent Congress, to live during the next four
years under the administration of any of the distinguished gentlemen named in connection with the Union nomination. Respectfully, Sohctler Colfax.

It is amusing to see how fre
quently Copperhead and so-called conservative papers unwittingly bear testi
mony to the sound political wisdom contained in the President's Amnesty Proclamation, even while they unsparingly denounce it The Louisville Journal of the 10th testifies to its practical workings as follows: A great many of the deluded young men who left this State two years ago to obtain their " rights" in the ranks of the rebel army, are returning daily. Some are brought in as prisoners of war, and others are availing themselves of the oath of amnesty offered by the President." Council proceedings. SATURDAY EVENING JANUARY 23, 1864.
