Hot Coffel and Cakes. The soldiers I of the 77th Ohio Regiment, are quarter- j ed as follows : At the Masonic Hal! ; at j the Court House; at the Rail Road Pas- j senger Station, and at tho now Round- j House. They will leave at 8 o'clock this morn, i Injr. Our citizens are oxnected to furn- i ish the brave veterans with hot cofiTee : and nicely buttered biscuit, and such
other edibles as are convenient. Let ! ire kindled; then the children sit shiveach family seek the point nearest their cring and shaking with cold, contracting
dwellings with their freo will of feelings 1 to their country's defenders. -- A Cold Campaign-. The 77th Ohio Regiment, on its way from Little Rock, Arkansas, to Ohio.to reorganize as veteup ... u i , the New Kentucky, which wag compel led to lay up two mile3 below West Franklin, from which point tke boys came through by land yesterday, arriving here singly, and in squads of from two to ten. They had a cold and fatiguing march, nnd must have suffered intensely, wading through the snow and carrying their guns generally without mittens. They number between 400 and 500 men, and have re-enlisted. They are now going horns- on a thirty days furlough, and have been thirteen days out from Little Rock, The New Kentucky was passed several days ago by the Superior, and Capt Dexter proposed taking the soldiers off and bringing them tip, but his offer was refused by the Captain of tho Kentucky, and hence they have been exposed not only to this long detention, but also to the fearful overland to this point, a distance of twenty miles. The military authorities in this city, headed by Capt. Ehrman, used every energy and great activity to supply all the wants of the brave veterans as they arrived. Comfortable quarters were secured. Bountiful rations were dealt out, and every effort was made to render them comfortable. They will be sent forward by rail this morning to their native State. Using Slexoba to Advantage. Yes terday afternoon the eteamer Idahoe, which had been pressed into the servico by the officers of the 77th Ohio, to bring the' sick and baggage of that Regiment to this city, from point below West 1'ranklin, reached a poiut four miles below this city, when all the sleighs, sleds and other suitable vehicles were pressed into the service by Quartermaster Ehrman, and at once dispatehed to tho boat to bring them up. The soldiers of the 77th are a noble looking set of men, and bora tbe'r fatignirur march and tho suffering from cold with heroic fortitude. The various public halls, Court House nndotlier suitable and comfortable places were taken for quarters for last night Acknowledgments. Our thanks are due to aevy of beauties, accompanied by a few gailant gentlemen, for a nice vocal serenade on Wednesday night, accomplished under diffculties. The party had been out sleigh riding and before going home, the ladies pro wosed a serenade to the Journal Office i which, by the way, was a very sensible idea. As the driver was turning into Locust Street he ran over a pile of rubbish, ship-wrecking the sleigh ; but the young ladies would not be baulked of their generous purpose, and marched to the front of the Journal Office, and enchanted us with "Rally round the flag boys," in a manner that would have brought to repentance the most incourageable rebel in the nation. May each lady have a veteran for a husband. Sleighing and Runaway. -The good sleighing not only continues, but additions are daily being made to the fleecy mantle that now enshrouds old mother earth, and the tintinnabulary music of sleighing parties continue to enliven tho streets of tho city. Sieighs are being built with great energy and of almost every .conceivable model. Stock in that vehicle has gone up way above steamboat or railroad shares, reaching almost the quotations of " Panama Mail." Wc saw a pair of ponies yesterday afternoon that had been lending enjoj" ment to a sleighing party, coursing down Front Street loose, with a most fearful velocity. Where they had left jhe sleigh and its contents we did not learn. There would be no fun sleigh riding were it not for upsets and runaways. t& Whisky speculators are congregating in Wf.sh:ngton to delay legislation in regard to the duty on whisky, and to urge au increase in the tax to one dollar per gallon. A largo proportion of these are manufacturers who are deeply interested in filiiog their own pockets. Xeic Albany Ledger. t'ottom is evidently afraid that whisky will rise in price, and he will not be able to draw his regular ration!". Why don't you quit drinking, like we have done? The mail train did not get in last night until near 11 o'clock, and the mail wilt be distributed this morning after the Eastern mail is made np. Caxceus. The Health of ouv Children Edio ra Journal : I am credibly informed that it is often iho case that when our little ones arrive at tho school room, instead of a comfort-1 able warmth, they have to sit with their cloaks and shawls on them until fires disease which will, with many, terminate I in untimely death. Will our Trustee, Superintendent, and their assistant, seo to this without delay? Certainly thorc is fuel; and as certain there are stoves; and as certain these gentlemen could, if tney wouia, hire a responsible man tc build the fires early, and thus make our children comfortable. It is of no use to try to educate our children, and in so doing kill them. The teachers, one aud all, ought to dismiss their schools in snch a case, and I am sure the people would sustain them in so doing. A Parent. J. P.
