and in reply to some strictures of the The Cincinnati Commercial compares Wabash Express, the Sullivan Demo- j the losses on our side, as officially reportcrat says: ed, with officially declared losses of the We think, with the Express ,imt a stop j rebels, and confirms fully the opinion of should be put to such practices, not only our. men that the rebels suffered far more here, but elsewhere, and so do al our ,u . . people; but how shall it be done? It the State or Na- ! iionai autnonties can devise any plan to terret out tno DerDetnttira. ani P,t stop to these outrages, they will receive the hearty co operation of the whole people of Sullivan county. In reply to the question, how can a stop be put to such outrages? we can tell the Democrat in a few words. Close your Lodges of tho Golden Circle, stop your incendiary talk about the despotism of the Administration, the destruction of the liberties of the people, and tjuit importing Dan Voorhces to rouse the ignorant to an uncontrollable pitch with his inflammatory appeals. When this is done, our word for it, the barn burning and robbery of Union citizens will cease. In the same connection we copy in a letter from Mr. McKee, whose barn was destroyed a few mornings since. He places the responsibility where it justly belongs: Sci.mvan, Nov. 21. Dear Brother With trembling hand I embrace the present opportunity of answering your kind letter. You cannot have the least idea of mv feelings when, upon the night of the 17th insL, between the hours of 11 and 12 o'clock, I was awakened by the crackling of flames, and upon leaving my chamhzr to ascertain the cause, discovered my barn, containing ten horses and some other valuable stock, completely enveloped by the devouring element. 'My feelings were beyond description while standing a forced witness to that scene of destruction, without being able to render the least assistance to the noble animals who were thus being destroyed, and it is doubly aggravating When I reflect that it was the work of an incendiary a develish fiend commissioned by a political organization, who sat in jndsment upon mv case during the hours of j midnight darkness, when none but the ; all-8ee.no eves of Onrl Kohr.lrl i.- J-r ! iniquity of their doings, the charges againsttnc being loyality to my Govern- ! ment, and the deep love I bore its free ; and benevolent institutions. And now, j as I stand gazing over thesmuking ruins of 2,000 worth of property so wan- : tonly destroyed which 1 have been ac- , cumulating for years, I cannot but exi claim, " How long, Ob, Governor, how 1 long, shall the Union citizens thus suffer? ' Is therenoreltet lor them? is there no ! redress? and then when I reflect upon I ! the cause of my misfortune, my blood ' . boils within my veins, and were it not for , 1 my helpless family, I would shoulder my ! I musket and swear eternal vengeance ' against all traitors whether North or j 1 South, knowing the principles for which ! I suffer are the same for which my an- ; ! cestors bled in the days of the Revolution, and which they handed down to me. f as I hope to to my children pure and untarnished. When my time shall be no 1 more on earth my children shall refer in memory to this sad solemnity as evidence , that their father was a truly loyal and : patriotic citizen. In the language of , Patrick Henry, " Live or die, sink or . ; swim, survive or perish, I am for liberty;'' : for a vigorous prosecutiou of the war; . for a rigid enforcement of the laws, tin- i ' til that glorious old flag shall wave victorious from Main to Mexico from the ' i Atlantic to the Pacific when traitors i shall be swept from the earth and doomed to everlasting perdition, on to where their father the Devil has a place al- 1 ready prepared for them. Yet, and as the case is, it might have been far worse fbl nothing but a kiud Providence saved my dwelling. No breeze was stirring, and t thus the fire was not communicated from j the barn to the house. The flames reached the height of one hundred feet I firmly believe ajustGod will bring to light the leader of this infernal organization, and then it will be known who destroyed the noble animals who were assisting me in : the support of my family by laithfully performing every thing required of them. ; If there is a man on earth who could witness this barbarous destruction with
