Editor. ...Associate. Help for Soldiers' Families. We publish this morning an appeal to the people of Vanderburgh county. It is more especially addressed to the farmers of the county. That they will respond liberally we have not a particle of doubt There is not a farmer in the county who is the fortunate possessor of a t vo-horse wagon but what can bring in a load of wood on the day fixed Saturday next One load of wood may be the means of gladdening and warming many hearts. Who would not rejoice in the privilege of contributing to so eminently a praiseworthy object? But while the farmers in the county are making their arrangements to bring in their wood, apples, potatoes, and such other necessaries of life as they may see proper to bestow upon the families of our noble volunteers, the citizens of our city should make proper arrangements to give the farmers a hearty reception. It has been sometime since the Legion has been seen parading our streets. We should like to see it under arms on that occasion. We should like to see, in addition, a good, substantial dinner pro- j

Price, Joshua Jackson, and Christian Winters. Missouri Election. The St Louis Democrat of yesterday says it is prepared unhesitatingly to claim the election of Messrs. Clover, Krekel and Wagne, Radical candidates for the Supreme Bench of Missouri. The result in 60 odd counts have been received. The Democrat says further T; -n v , if IZnl neatly reduced, f not wholly wipped out, in these counties by the soldier vote, while some of the most radical portions of the State are yet to ,be heard from. On this showing it i3 apparent the home vote will not be far from even, while the soldier voto cannot well give a Radical majority of less than t'rem sevtn to ten thousand. Wf also learn from reliable parties, who were in the South-vest during the election, that the Radicals have carried everything there. News Items. Tobacco at Henderson. We learn hut Messrs. Morris 4 Co., proprietors of 'ie wharf-boat at Henderson, have sniped, during the season, ending Nov. 1st,

lOOd, over 3,UUU hogslieads of tOD&CCO. Hay increases in price, and was on Wednesday commanding at Cincinnati $2S(3)$30 per tun. To feed horses and cows at this figure is quite an expenditure. Wood is selling at Cincinnati at SI 1 per cord, and coal is furnished by the coal committee at $S per load of twentyfive bushels. East Tennessee Cotton. Another large shipment of cotton from Knoxville, Tenn., reached Covington, Kentucky, on Wednesday night of last week, by the Kentucky Central Railroad. Nearly all the Government wagons returning from Knoxville to Nicholasville, Ky., bring cotton. At Nicholasville it is shipped by railroad to Covington. Sixty-Sixth Indiana. In consequence of the gallant conduct of the 66th regiment, Col. D. C. Anthony, in the late affair at Collierville, Gen. Sherman ordered the regiment to be attached to his army. The regiment has according ly left Collierville, and is now with Gen. Sherman's command. At last accounts it was at Iuka. Gen. Sherman speaks in glowing terms of the 66th. Gen. Sherman well understands the fighting qualities of Indiana regiments, and we are not at all surprised that he desires the gallant G6th io lead his columns. On Wednesday afternoon J. W Webb was tried in the court n.f Common Plena, i, Indianapolis, for stealing a horse ten days previous, and sentenced to five years in the penitentiary. Punishment followed the crime fast in this case. Caroline and Emily Alt, the two little girls so dreadfully mangled by an accident at the Marine Railw.iv, Madison, a few days ago, are improving, and will probably get welL Each had a leg and an arm amputated. The Cincinnati Coal Committee, after more than a week's hard labor, have got their machinery running, and they will hereafter receive 20,000 bushels per day. Sufficient money has h "en subscribed by the people of Jeffersonville to place town clocks in the spires now being erected on the Methodist and Presbyterian churches of that piace. A number of buildings are in course of construction, and the city is improving rapidly. On last Monday a week Esquire Matthew Borland of Bedford was, for the F-ixth time, sworn in as Justice of the :'eace. He has served as Justice in iedford for twenty-four years, and has always proved a faithful officer. 'LFrom our own Correspondent. From East Tennessee. Headquarters 2d Brigade, 4th Division, 23d Army Corps, Jonesboro, Tennessee, Oct 18, 1863. Dear Journal: 1 last wrote to you from Knoxville, just on the eve of a march. Well, we took the march, and went to Loudon, where we remained two or three days. Loudon is thirty miles from Knoxville, on the Tennessee River, and about sixty miles from Chattanooga. Ve all supposed we were going down to reinforce " Rosey," but such was hot to be our destiny. We returned to Knox ville, and after staying one day we once more took up our line of march for Blountsville, Bristol, or "any other place. Onr brigarlp. went by the way of Kogersville, while Gens. Burnside and Shackleford, with CoL Curtis' brigade of pushed on to Rheatown, eight miles above Greenville, with the intention of cutting off their retreat from Greenville, while ahackletord, with Curtis brigade, moved on to attack and drive them from the latter place. The rebels fell back from Greenville before Shackleford got there and commenced going through Rheatown about daylight Sunday morning, October Uth. lhe greater portion of the brig ade was about two miles from town, leav ing only the oth Indiana Cavalry to re sist their passage through the town They were too heavy for the gallant 5th, and they had to fall back and unite with the rest ot the column. We then ad vanced the entire brigade, and about noon the hgbting was very spirited. The rebels were under cammand of Gen. Williams, and were supposed to be about ),UUU strong. We drove them before us from one position to another, until Gen. Shackleford arrived with the other brig ade. V e then drove them before us pell melL They made four stands that afternoon, and we fought for over ten miles, till darkness closed in upon us. Our loss was about 10 killed; the number wounded I did not learn. The 5th Indiana Cavalry lost 8 of their number. Carter s brigade lost some few. The loss of the rebels we did not ascertain. The 65th Indiana went into the fight on foot, and pursued the rebels four miles, until they were tired out. I think the 65th will make as good a fighting regiment as there is in the service. We occupied the battle field on the 12th, and on the 13th we marched to Watauga River, eight miles from Blountsville, jto which place the rebels had retreated in torce. On the morning of the 14th we moved on to .Blountsville. Wo tore up about On the 17th we fell back to Zollicoffer, where we tore up more track, and burned more bridges. I don't see what made the Rebels give up this position, for it was almost impregnable. On the 18th, we fell back to Jonesboro, and as this is the 15th, here my narrative closes. We have just received news that Vallandigham lacks about 65,000 votes of being Governor of Ohio. That looks as if Ohio was at last going to wake up, and drive the traitors from her soil. Corporal A. J. Stinson and private ML C. Smith, of Co. H, 65th Indiana, who were left behind wounded at Blountsville, at that other fight, were found to be still alive. Stinsou i3 about and doing well, but there is little hope for Smith. He had to be left behind again. The health of the boys is very good, as a general thing, but they have been on the hardest kind of duty ever since we left home. All we need is rest.
