FoaT Monroe, October 4. The flag of truce boat New York arrived last night from City Point, bringing Richmond papers to the 3d, which contain the following: Charleston, October t On the 30th the enemy fired 300-pounder Parrotts all daj, at intervals of fifteen minutes, alternately at Sumter and Johnson. We replied vigorously. There were no casualties or damage of importance on our side. Very heavy firing is going on between the hostile batteries this morning. Tbe firing during to-day baa been heavier than for several weeks. The enemy has been steadily pounding at tie ruina of Sdmter from his batteries on Morris Island, beyond Wagner. He also shelled Fort Johnson. Our batteries and Fort Moultrie replied with a brisk and steady fire. All is quiet to night Columbia, S. C, September 31. The Legislature adjourned to-day, having passed the following bills : An act to prevent desertion from the service : an act for raising and granting privileges to volunteer companies of mounted infantry ; to provide for an election of Members of Congress; an art to amend an act to supply negro labor for defense. The two armies were still eont'ronting each other, at last accounts, at Chattanooga. Roaecr&tis, it is said, has established three lines in front of tbe town. It ia reported that Bragg is fortifying Missionary Ridga. The following is from Washington October 5 : Letters from Dal ton, Ga., of tbe 26th of j September, published in tho Richmond Dispatch of Saturday, say . that the over Sanguine multitude will be some, what diappointed to know that the chance of Bragg'a taking Roaecrans's army is no easy job. Although his losses have been heavy1, yet be has a very formidable army. About 2,5uCtreJ main in the held hospitals tor severely wounded to endure transportation. A report reached Dalton yesterday that General Samuel Jones occupied Knoxvilie, and that Burnside retreated toward Cumberland Gap. Major Rice Graves, Chief of Artillery of General Burbridge s staff, died Sunday, frum wound, received at Chickamauga. The Examiner says there is no fight

ing at uuattanooga. A looao telegram, from irresponsible parties, would have believe that Bragg had cut Roaocrana' communicationa, including Lookout Mountain, tbe road to Nashville, Ac, bt from Bragg'a fatim-e to observe the offensive,-, jvn fear there is too much truth in Rosecrans' dispatch to his Government, that he held an impregnable position. LOUISVILLE, October 6. The Nashville dispatch of to day says the rebels burned tbe Railroad Bridge at Stewart's Creek, and another over Stone River. After the capture of McMinnville on Saturday, by the rebels under Wheeler, they burned one locomotive and ten cars, and took a number of Railroad men as prisoners. Subsequently Colonel McCook, with a brigade of Federal cavalry attacked them there, scattering them in every direction. The Nashville Journal editorially says Wheeler, with 8,000 cavalry and mounted infantry, has succeeded in getting into the rear of Gen. Rosecrans and threatens to break his railroad connections. There seems to be rebel cavalry all along the Chattanooga Mad watching for
