Airangemeiits aro being mado at Grayvillo for at least 10,000 people,. It is expected that tho counties of White, Edwards, Wabash, and a good part cf Wayne, will bo largely represented. General Logan never fails to have immense audiences in Southern Illinois. The Rockport Democrat, judging from an editorial which we copy, is greatly disgusted with the Democracy of Warrick and Vandcrburg Counties. It says it expected to bo sold out in this county, because the delegation to tho Judicial Convention, both before and after the nomination, declared it3 intention to do eo. But the unexpected turn in Warrick against Judge Liird, causes the iron to pierce tho soul of the editor. It was bad, especially when the Judge had fought so many hard battles for the Warrick Democracy. The Democrat seems unable to comprehend that the Warrick Damocraoy may have cor. ccived the idea that Mr. Moore would make a better Judge than Mr. Laird. Mobmonism ia having a pretty hard time just cow. What, with the large influx of Gentile miners, railroad men, and adventurers of every description and tho rigid regulations of; the Governor of tho Territory, :J3righan Young's authority is beconi ing greatly - endangered. ' Governor Shaffer, in forbidding the assembling of tbe irregular Mormon militia, has practicallylmusterod theNauvoo; Le gion out of service. It is believed by some that. Young will command the Legion to assemble on November the time of its annual muster, and that if it docs assemble, it will commit an overt act of resistance to the nationa authority which will causo a prompt trial of strength. There is no doubt that the act of Gov. Shaffer and the ooncurrent'act of Chief-Justice. Mo Kean, repudiating tho Mormon At torncy General, will -do much to bring tho authority of tho latter.' day Saints to an end. ' . City Taxes. . In commenting on the tax levy, raado for tho current year by tho present Counoil, the. Couri.r on Friday last asserted very positively printing tho statement in italic that, "notwithstanding the improve ments made this year, in pursuance of the order of the psople at expressed at the polls, the tixation of the present year will le the lowest ever mida in Eoansxilh." , :;' In crdcr that oar readers may havo acorroot rale, by whiah to measure tho trathfulness of th3 Courier's statement, we give tho taxation for the past cloven years, including the-.rate and tho amount assessed: . 5 f
Am't 51,611 17 fii.I'M 41 41.075 81 7T7 81 61 SM-i 75 170,109 91 U813 07 ltT, M 10 i :o.77i 01 210.12S 75 By the above tabic, it .will be seen that with the exoeption of the years 1SG2, 1SG3. and 1SG3, the rate of tax-; ation this year is higher than ia any previous year of the city's history. In 18C2 and 1E63 the Council was compelled to levy a tax in order to pay the accrued interest on tho bonds of the Straight Line Railroad, which tho Coorta " decided tho city must assume and pay. Interest on these bonds had " been repudiated as far back as the administration of, Mayor Ilewson, and had remt!ncd unpaid until the city was compelled, by a decreo cf the Court, to pay the back interest. In 1SC3 the Democracy, for tho first time in nine years, secured absolute control of the city, and the taxes in consequence rose to the intcrcsting rate of II -10, while the indebtedness of tho city made a corresponding increase. In 1BG9 a Republican Council, made an effort to stem the current of wastefulness, and succeeded in reducing the rate of taxation to f 1 19, and at tho same time made a slight redaction on the indebtedness of;tho city. Following, that comes tho administration of the present Council, whioh we predict will stand pro-eminent i in the history of the city for : folly and extravagance. Tho Ccurkr boasts that the rate of taxation i fixed afe $120. It takes particular care, however, to assert no thing, not even so nuch as a guess, as to tho probable increase of tho City's indebtedness. That ia fully as interesting a point for tax-payers as tho: rate of taxation. , There is no "dodging the payment of eht principal and interest. The day of payment may be postponed, but it is inevitable. What the people would like to know is, will fixing the rate of taxation at $1 20 this year pay off all tho current expenses of the City during the year, and also provide for the payment of interest on all the bonds? We assert that it will not do so. .The deLciency will bo pro vided for by issuing bonds and selling them at a ccrious sacrifice. Suoh had been tho policy all through tho year. Evon ordinary cxponsoa such as have from time immemorial been mat by issuing city orders -nave cms year been paid with interest-beariBg bonds. The policy of the Council has been to increase rather than rcducz the rate of interest on tho City's indebtedness, ia addition to largely increasing tho in debtedness itself. It is a policy that will utterly ruin the City if persisted in any length of tiino. ? Tho petty wire-workers, who are manipulating and managing the Council, may hope to deceivo the people, but will find themselves mistaken.' Tho people arc in the habit of look-

They will insist oc knowicg whether tho present Council has fixed its tax levy at a figure that will meet its current cxDcnditures, 'or whether it designs imposing a largely increased debt upon its successor. Fuller, tne iavor ite sun of old Warrick. We exoected to be sold out in "Van derburgh, because the delegation from that county, at the Convention, not onlv before, but after the nomination was made, told us what they intended to do, and right nobly did - they stand by their pledge;, and in their great efforts to defeat Judge Laird, they selves, and Vanderburgh now stands alone as the only Republican county in the First Congressional District of Indiana, and one of four south of the national road. , We are at a less to know how to ao count for this sudden and unexpected turn m old Democrats Warnclc. es Deciallv against Judge Laird, who has fought bo many hard battles for the Democracy of Warrick. We had hoped that Vanderburgh would be the only county m the Judicial district that would play into the hands tf the Renublicans to defeat Judge Laird, but we were sadly mistaken for Warrick has done even worse than Vanderbursh to defeat Judge Laird Warrick is 450 majority Democratic on the State ticket, and yet she gave a maioritv aaaintt Laird of SZI votes not onl- takine away from him 450 Democratio votes, but Riving a Re tmblican maioritv aaainst of 222 which every man of common sense in this District well knows has not been accomplished on good old Democratic principles. . ! The negroes aro industrious, and many have farms on' whioh thev wero making an honest living. The community has made no complaint of them, but declare them tobe quiet, industrious and peaceable. We learn also that about forty colored families have left the vicinity ol Chriatiansburg. for the same causes. Subjected to robbery, whipping and other vio-; lenco at night, they find no protection in State law, no remedy in the civil power and authorities, no "amnesty" from the victorious Democrats who sweep Bald Knob Precinct at every election. As the Yeoman affects to make light of these - outrages, and it seems no doubt that they ever occur, if it will send to this office we will furnish it a list of the colored people who have left Bald Knob beoauso they cannot live at home in peace. -Frankfort Ky.)
