TUESDAY, AUGUST 2, ISIO. Captain CoofllDg' Appointments, CAPT. H. CLAY GOODING! Will address his fellow citizens of Posey County, on political subjects, at the follow ing times and places: Poseyville. Tuesday, August 21. "Wadesville, Wednesday, August 3d. Cvnthlana. Posey County, Thursday, August 4th Owensville, Gibson County, Friday, An ?nst 5th. Fort Branch, Gibson County, Sa'urday k rtaraoon. August 6th. Speaking to take place at night. In each except at Fort Branch. Come out, , vrvbodr. and listen to a fair and dis passionate discussion ol the question at isaue between the two political parties. INDIANA ITEMS. The new hotel project at New "may haa proven failure. The Posey County Fair will be ia?J at New Harmony. September 13th. . " .'. Messrs. Hendricks and Voorhees cpeak at Mt. Vernon, on the 10th of August. Mr. and Mrs. Golden rjlay for the delectation cf New Harmony, on Saturday evening next. The Hon. J.K.Edgerton has again been elected President of the Grand Ilipids & Indiana Railroad. Mr. Azbo Drra haa beea at Rookport, looking, no doubt, after the Jones Convention. Potatoe bugs are destroying the potatoes in tho vicinity of Bowling Green. Two steamboatsthe James Gray and the Zanesville are at Terre Haute. They will stay until Fall. - The peach and plum crop in Clarke County i3 a failure. There will be an abundance of apples and pears. t The editors of tho Fort Wayne papers are engaged in a personal controversy, and call each other bad names. ' The people of Auburn are rejoicing over the completion of the Fort Wayne & Saginaw Railroad to that place. Mrs.W. McK. Hester, of New Albany, has been presented with a beautiful quilt by the members of the Wesley Chapel Church Choir. The New Harmony Register makes fan of Capt. Da La Hunt and George Shanklin. The Register ought not to ridicule its politioal relatives. The Terre Haute Gazette think3 the census will give lerre Haute a population of at least 20,000. -We doubt it, if the census is correctly taken. Miss Minnie BaABcar, Marshall County, is studying theology with the view of becoming a preacher.' She is said to be a young lady of fine intellect and rare culture. Several cities are complaining of neglect on the part of the census taker. Cau3e why? They don't find as many-people in the cities as have bean claimed hitherto. The New Harmony Register is sorry to see a disposition cropping out among a ring of politicians at Mt. Vernon, to defeat Davy Laird for Circuit Judge. The Democrat says tho Rockport Railroad is progressing as rapidly as could be expected under the circumstances. The engineer is now engaged in locating tho road bed permanently. The Louisvillo and Henderson Packet Company propose to discount delegates to the Jones Judicial Convention at Rockport, on Saturday, August 6, at 25 per cent, from regular fare. There is a girl in Huntington County, fifteen years old, who. weighs one hundred and eighty pounds, and stands six feet two inches in her stockings. Her name is Nora Mills, and she is engaged. A number of the citizens of Marshall, Illinois, propose in a short time to make an excursion to Evansville, 1 over the E. & C. Railroad. The President of the road proposes to reduce - the fare to $3 for the round trip from Terre Haute to Evansville and return, tickets good for ten dya. On Thursday afternoon the lightning felled ten telegraph poles on the New Albany and Chicago Railroad, a - mile and a half south of Mitchell. The man who attends to the repairs of the lines states that every time there is a storm in that vicinity the lightning strikes that identical spot. Nineteen years ago, a man named Peter Palmer, in the prime of early manhood, was sentenced to twentyone years confinement in the Southern Indiana State Prison, for an ag gravated outrage on a girl. He has behaved so well that two years of his term have been commuted, and Tuesday he was discharged, an old, grayheaded man, who begins life again under great disadvantages. The Process says that a suspioious looking man got off the cars at Bloomington a day or two ago, and A cautions look around he stole A bag of chink he chunk ; And many a pleasant smile he smole, And many a wink he wunk t And then straight way proceeded to the Progress office and gave Gabe a big water melon and two dollars for his paper one year. the iSloomneld Tribune says: "Mr. B. B. Watson, in sinking a well at his mill near Linton, in Greene County, struck a vein of block coal about twenty-two inches thick, some forty feet below the surface of the earth. Immediately under this strata of coal he came to an excellent quality of fire clay, through which he is now digging.- He hopes to find a thicker vein of coal under this clay. and if L5 decs he will have a good lung of it.
From the IadlaoapoUs Journal, joiy u,
Another Democratic DeM. When Governor Willard took the State administration in 1857, our for-- , and domestic ctae. debts to gether amounted to $7,820,311. When he gave place to uovemor hjub buu Governor Morton, in 1851, the forego. and domestia bcate aebvS amouncea iu 110,179,267. In three years a Demo cratic administration taa mcreuati our debt f 2 352,956, besides addiog at least $100,000 to the expenses of the counties to take care of the insane, mute and blind, who were wantonly turned out of the asylums provided for them by the generosity of the people. Tfcis is the Democratic exhibit of the State debt. Tney left it flO.179,207. The Republicans have paid it entirely The fainking Fund Board have notified all holders of our bonds that no more interest will be paid, and that there is money enouah on hand to redeem every dollar of outstanding bonds. Ten millions paid in ten years is the Republican fact ol State management. The Stare debt increased from $7,800,000 to $10,100,000 an addition of $2,300,000 ia the Democratic fact of State management. Keep these two facts in mind, for they are types of the parties who are now presenting their claims to manage State affairs for the nprt two vears. lint there is another fact behind all this which the people must keep cauallv in mind, if they mean to save themselves the payment of another debt nearly as laree as the old one We gave the Wabash and Eric Canal in discharge of half our old internal lmnrovement debt. JLhat canal our creditors have mismanaged till it is nearly worthless, and they have sold their stock in it for little or nothing to a lot of New York speculators and Indiana Democrats. These men mean to get the next Legislature to take back the canal, and pay in cash the debt it was surrendered for. That will burthen us with about $6,000, 000, and an annual outlay for interest of $300,000. If the .Democrats control the next Legislature it will be done. It has been attempted, several times, and there is no thought of gividz it up. It. by any sort ol influ ence, bribery, party discipline or in dividual intimidation, the Legislature can once be brought to resume the canal the case will be ended, and the people will be without remedy There is no safety but in men who can be trusted, or in the Constitutional prohibition whioh the Republican State plauorm aemanas ana tne dem ocrats oppose. . The significant facts in connection with this echeme to fill Democratic pockets at the expense of the people are: 1st. That Democrats hold these stocks, purchased at a trifling cost.' 2d. That the proposition to prevent the State from being burthened with a new debt, by a constitutional amend ment. is strenuously opposed by the Democracy. The Sentinel denounces it as unnecessary. Their State plat form ignores it. The Democratic candidate for Attorney General, in speech made in the estate senate, ou Thursday, March 7, 1807, on a propo eition to amend the State Constitu tion so as to prevent the Wabash and Erie canal from being forced upon us said: "He was unwilling to propose a con stitutional amendment which repndi ates vart of the State dtbt. If there is not some covered design to repudi ate some portion of the debt some where, what is the use of this amend ment?" (See Brevier Reports 1867, page 412.) To refuse to take back the canal, says Mr. Bayless W. Hanna, is repudiation. His question is a precious specimen of Democratic innocence. "If there was no covert purpose, to repudiate, what was tho need of the amendment?" To prevent Democrats from executing their "covert purpose" to compel the State to pay cash for the canal. That is the need of the amendment. If Mr. Hanna is elected law officer of the State, we can set down his-official opinion in favor of this speculation at once. 4th. Mr. Garrett, President of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Company, has recently brought suit in the Carroll County Circuit Court of this State, against the Trustees of the Wabash and Erie Canal, to recover the value of $41,000 of old internal improvement bonds, issued under the act of 1836, and by it made a lien on all the public works ot the State. These bonds were not surrendered under the Butler arrangement of 1846-7. The canal being subject to their lien, a judgment for the plaintiff will compel the sale of the canal, or the advance of money enongh to protect it from execution. Nobody has any authority to advance that money. So the speculators expect to force the canal to a sale, and then come to the Legislature m with a "poor mouth" and a piteous plea, that " the State allowed their property to be taken from them under a prior claim, and now they have got nothing." This is the first move in the game. We Suspect that Governor Baker will be ready for it, for he don't mean that the people shall be saddled with any $6,000,000 of debt for a Democratic speculation, and the schemers who are longer headed than he is had better buy hats by the yard. What security would we have if Mr. Bayless W. Hanna were the State's law officer, as the Democrats want to make him? The canal would be sold on Garrett's judgment, and then the clamor would be raised by Democrats for indemnification of canal stockholders. Luckily this arrangement won't amount to much while Governor Baker has the task of resisting it. But these facts may show the people how serious, even threatening, is the prospect of their being loaded with $6,000,000 more of debt to help a Democratic speculation.
