Dr. S. B. Thomas President of the Indiana North & South Railway, returned to this city on Wednesday from a trip over tho line south of this to the Ohio River. He left next day for the North, and will go over the entire length of tha line to Attica. Work has already been commenced on this road in Parke County, and the contracts will all be let along tho line at an early day. The people must bear in mind that this is an enterprise that requires time and a vast amount of labor to arrange. The money must be got together, and everything systematized before the work can be commenced in earnest. This ha3 all been accomplished, through the untiring energy of Mr. Thomas. There is now a certainty that within a few months we will hear the whis tle of the locomotive coming from the North, bearing in its train the long pent up and lruitful resources of the couaties through which it passes. AH I MFC MAS"? LIFE IVSUBAJfCX EX The Life Association cf America. Our remarks in a preceding article were suggested by a consideration of one of the most important enterprises with which we are acquainted; namely the Life Association of America; and as a sequel to these remarks, it may not be out of place to furnish a few of the facts connected with this remarkable institution: 1. In June, 1S6S, one hundred of the prominent business men of St. Louis, having become fully impressed with the injury to Missouri industry, which was being wrought by the annual withdrawal to the East of three or four million dollars of working capital, for life insurance purposes, united in an effort to check what they regarded as aa evil. They organized tbe Life Association, on a purely mutual basis; creating tbe necessary capital by each insuring in the sum of ten thousand dollars, thereby providing a business of one million dollars insurance, and an annual revenue of between seventy and eighty thousand dollars at the very outset. 2. The officers of the Association at St. Louis invited the prominent business men of the other cities of the West and South, to join in the movement. Tbe response to this invitation has been glorious. In every leading Western and Southern State tbe leading men have identified themselves with the enterprise. Chicago throwing off her prejudice against St. Louis forms a branch with no less than one hundred and ten of her most wealthy and influential citizens, each of whom has taken a $10,000 policy, as required by the charter of tho Company. Louisville falls into line with some Eeventy or more of the leading mercantile men of that city.; Memphis starts with fifty; New Orl eans with one hundred and fifty; and so on all through the West and South.' Noria this all. The most important Eastern cities are seeking representation ia the movemtnt. We understand that between one and two hundred of the hpavy bankers and merchants of New York hava already signified their intention of becoming trustees for the Association, and a branch is being rapidly organized there, while the good old city of Baltimore is aireaay numoerea among the most successful departments of the Institution. The Life Association is only twenty-two months in existence, nevertheless its business is greater than that of many of the companies ten years old. It has issued policies to the number of seven thousand, covering more than fifty millions of insurance. Its annual revenue exceeds two million dollars. This seems almost impossible, but it is vouched for by the highest authority in this country. 3. The plan of the Association which has produced for it such a remarkable measure of success, is, substantially, as follows: Each State is formed into a Department, which is virtually a local Company, and the management of its business placed in the hands of a number of well-known citizens, who are sleeted annually, by the local policy-holders. These fentlemen are called the Department Joard of Directors, and among their duties is tho very important one of increasing in each district, that portion of the assets which belongs to the p:ople of the district, or, in other words, all of the premium receipts not required to pay current expenses and losses. All these Departments or local companies are combined together for mutual proteo tion and proper strength, and managed by a general Board of Directors at St. Louis. This board embraces the President of each Department or State company, thus giving each an equitable share in the administration of the general business. It will be readily seen that this plan secures to each State the advantages of a home company, and thereby keeps the capital among tbe people, to whom it beloces.and in addition, it secures to each individual policyholder the security of a large capital, and the economy consequent upon a large and prosperous business. It affords us muoh pleasure to chronicle the euccesa of this enterErise, because it appears to us a death low to the present pys'em of con ducting life insurance business, which is not only iejurious to the industry of the company, but is absolutely dangerous and against public policy. The Route to l?ew York. New Yokk City, May 26, 1870. Editors Journal : Just as I was leaving Evansville, several friends who contemplate an Eastern tour duricg the Summer, learning that I was coming through by the Atlantic and Great Western and Erie Railway, asked me to write them an unprejudiced opinion of the route as compared with other lines I accordingly drop a 'note to the Journal, net only for their benefit. but also for the numerous readers of the Journal who will be traveling Eastward this season. " Leaving Evtnsville by either the forenoon or evening train, and transfericg at Vincennes Junction, direct and close connection is made at Cincinnati at the Dayton depot, only three squares distant. The trains from Cincinnati over the A. & G. W. and Erie Railway for New York traverse the tchole line. There are other competing routes which run through single palace cars, but none others which run through trains; and the great advantage in this is that there is no danger of missing conrJtions, or tedious delays at transfer points or connecting depot a great item with travelere. The Palace sleeping cars attached to the Cincinnati night express, (with which passengers by the Evansville forenoon train, making, close connections) are as elegant as the most fashionable drawing-rooms, each single car costing twenty-three thousand dollars. In these cars, seats and berths are engaged at Cincinnati and retained till landed at New York. In addition to their luxurious furniture and finish, the broad guagemzkea them so roomy and attractive. The first breakfast after leaving home is taken in Central Ohio, dinner in Pennsylvania, supper in. New York State, and early the following mornicg in New York City; ani all of the eating stations, from Capt. Mass throughout the route, are of first clars character. I am free to eay that our ride last week was the most pleasant in all respects, I ever made to New York, and I am prepared to concede to the A. & G. W. and Erie route tbe palm of excellence. The greatest care is used in tha management of tho express train, act, after elo-e obFervatioD. I taw nothiog to justify the charges of
its enemiea of recklessness and dan
ger. I can cordially recommend it to ail excursion parties, and especial!? to families and ladiea without esoort?, as tha most convenient and comfortable of all the routes to the Ea3t. Spsnoer County, left his home with bis family, composed of hia wife and three children, in a small spring wagon, with the intention of visiting his brother-in-law, Mr. John Cooper who lives about ten miles from lay lorsville. When about five miles from the house, aad at a place where the road, which is very narrow, passos over a high cliff on the banks of Salt River, he attempted to make a short turn, in order to keep further from the edge of the cliff. Jastaabedrew up the lines and was about to pull to the right the horse became frightened, and sudden ly backd the wsgon over the chit. The wife and all the children are badly hurt, and Mr. Randall is fatally injured, and when our lnlortnant leit his life was despaired of. The horse waa killed instantly, and the wagon was a complete wreck. Mr. Randall is a highly respectable gentleman, and the whole community of Taylorsville were shocked when the news of his misfortune reached them Courier- Journal. Card from Hon. 8. . Pcrkks. To the Editor cf the Indianapo'ls Journal When it had become evident to my mind that continual opposition, on the part of the Democracy of the- North to the war against the rebels cf the South, might re sult in tho severance of tbe Union instead of its restoration, I published a letter in which I declared my purpose to support the Administration m the prosecution ot the war as the only means of saving the Union. Jbor this I was de nounced by leading Democrats, pub lished as being insane, ndicuied in "Northwest passage," literature, etc. For this I have never been forgiven by leading Democrats: and am still occasionally assailed by thm public lv. especially by those who arc in fa vor of saddling upon the State its old Canal bonds, as I happen to have evi dence satisfactory to my own mind iiut as tbe time has come when 1 expect to support the country :n preference to party, if I have not always done it, partizan slang is to me a mat ter of indifference.
