Translated from the. original Greek, lnciaUlng explanatory notes and observations by williaii: Whistos, A. M., with a complete Index. In Four Volumes. New Y.ork: Oak.-' lkt, Ma4on & Co. , .; - Within; trie past twenty-five years, uauusal activity has been displayed in Biblical research and criticism, and no other, quarter of a century has been characterized ty the publication of such a variety and number of books strictly theological ia their character and design. Numerous havo been tho Lives of Christ, in which that wonderful being has been considered and discussed from every possible stand poiat; various and profound have been - the Bible Dictionaries,, Commentaries and Cyclope dias, and multitudinous are the works of a minor character which have challenged the attention .. ;of tho learned and unlearned alike" duricg these eventful twonty-fivc years. The ; Rationalists have "pertinaciously and , even eloquently argued their? opposition to ;the faith and doctrines of Christianity, and the followers .! of Christ with . equal za.al and intelligerice have defended the orthodox standard of faith. But amoDg all this immense number of publications relating to the question of Christianity, there are none, to oaf mind?, which convey mora solid and satisfactory information than may he found irt the writings of Josephuf, the disti'nguished Jewish: historian. Josephu$ was a standard aut&ority In the libraries of Christiana of; an ear lier peridkl in this country, but of lata has been' very nearly, if not altogether, supplanted by what we might correctly term tho Sunday school literature of the day. In a few libraries only, comparatively, or in some out-of-the-way corner, stowed away among the rubbish accumulated" by time, may be $ found antiquated copies cf tho old t author, which aremorefrequently nised for kindling fires than improving the minds of those who chance to discover them, j, JIn view of this fact we greet with genuine satisfaction and pleasure the new Library Edition of Josephus, prepared and published ty Oakley, Mason & Co., cf New York. This ; edition is composed of five volumes,; printed On heavy tinted paper, elegantly bound in cloth, and of a size convenient in every particular. :, We can hardly reconcile this handsome edition with our boyhood's notions of Josephu?, gathered from hasty inspections cf the ponderous old volume, which, seeming; to brcatho defiance from cover and contents, occupied a prominent position among the other books that constituted the scanty library of the old home. , After; all, the appearance of books has much to do with the enjoyment of their; reading. We dare say that tho attractiva type and binding in which the publishing house have dressed the old Hebrew scholar and author havo given him access to and a cordial greeting in hundreds of houses from which he would otherwise have been forever excluded. No christian, aasiou3 tcC&vail himself of all the' knowledge that will enable him at any and ail' times to give a good reason for the hope that is within him, can do without a copy of Josephus. Sunday School teachers will also find in the Antiquities of the Jews, a clae thatwill enable them to unravel and "correctly comprehend many' difficult passages in tho Old Testament Scriptures which would otherwise ba to thetn forever a sealed book. 1 Letters addressed to the publishers, Oakley Mason & Co., 21 Murray Street.'New Yorkwill always receive prompt attention. Wk hear that the Bubject of "Spellins? lleform" is shortly to come be fore the Philological boeieiy. All' we i can say is, the auditors will be Spell bound.
MAGAZINES.
The May Monthly Part of Oliver Optic's Magazine has a rich table of contents, and numerous excellent illustrations. Oliver Ootlc's new story, "Field and Forest," proves to De one or nis test; and tne otner stories, the sketches, anecdotes end po-. etry, are even better than usual, lfce puzzle department is amusing; And the popular "Letter Bag" can not help putting the boys and girls in good humor. No other juvenile magazine gives so much reading or so many pictures; and it is the only one published in both weekly and monthly "editions. Published by Lec & Shepird, 149 Washington Street, Boaton, at $2 50 per year. - ( Tuz "Eiveesibe" for Juno gives U3 once more a picture by the inexhaustible Stephens, who, one would think, lived in a menagerie by the familiar acquaintance he has with bird, beast, and fish. The bees are beginning to buzz in it also, for there is a western sketch of a "Bee Hunt on the Prairia," by Miss Thomas; a second article by Arthur Gillman, on "Beginning and Apiary;" and the pretty -"Little-Folk Songs" include one about a bee. There is a bird story in "A Wood-robia Abroad," and one of "Laurels and Daisy Chains." Hans Anderson also sends a spricg song, a bit of poetry, and . thus the most delightful ",; season cf the year gets fairly heralded ia the Riverside.
