Some of the sharp New Yorkers have been victimized by forged bills of lading, purporting to represent shipments of cotton from Galveston, Texas. It is said that advances on ; these bills have been made, amounting to over $100,000. The New York Standard ha3 been "informed that the Tribune paid Mr. Junius Henri Brown $ 1,000 for Mrs. ! Kichardson's statement. This is per haps the largest price ever paid for a i single article in a morning newspaper, 4 and is a fine example of enterprise.1 Still, we cannot help thinking that !Mrs. McFarland committed a great error in permitting any one to speculate on a statement which was apparently written as a vindication of her ; honor. The U. S. Senate is distinguishing 'itself during the present session by its indifference to measures in which ; the paopla are greatly interested, and the recklessness with which it votes away public money. Last week it put through the Northern Pacific ; Railroad swindle and an appropriation of half a million dollars for tho j commencement of a new State Departi ment. We are pleased to know that j Senators Morton and Pratt; opposed both of the appropriations. J The New Harmony liegister adi vises the Journal to publish the j speech of Hon. YVilliam M. Holman, ! of Indiana, in opposition to the grant f L 1 !. l.n.tj ,si vnil.rt.il nn.nnfa. tions, if it is really in tavor ot stop 2 r;nir the outraeeous Eauandering of , . I the public lands. This is modest, on i,n TMTt nf tha : Kemstrr. Had wa room for all the speeches against that iniquity, we could find several that excelled in merit that of the Honorabio Representative from "the Third District. But wa have a question 1 for the liegister. If it is opposed to j squandering tho public lands, why don't it denounce Mr, Vorhees for voting with the monopolists? He is j the only Congressman from Indiana ' who voted for the Northern Pacific i Railroad iniquity, and, so far as we have seen, not a solitary Democratic . 1 k A tyA Ct.fa ii.a .AnJaniti.-l - , vote. Had a Republican RepresenI tative voted the same way, these pa- ! pers would have been prompt in call m . a. 1 I i ing attention to his Detrayai ot his ; constituents. It would have been better had Mr. Holman appealed to the Democratic members of the House especially to his friend Voorhees, to aid in defeating this ""put up job" of eastern capitalists to secure vast tracts of western land. I nUe ana items. Mob law seem3 to prevail in Jefferson County. Rockport boasts a base - ball club which can afford a uniform. I Putnam County glassware is on exhibition in Green Castle. ' The Newburgh i?econ?er was delayed last week on account of a rush of job work and the absence of the editor. : The Mitchell Commercial thinks that Moses F. Dunn, Esq., will be the Republican candidate ior congress in that District Conant & Co., contractors for building the Mt. Yrernon & Grayville road, will have "a corps of engineers in Mt. Vernon in a few days. The Democrat says the road be tween Mt. Vernon and New Harmony is a disgrace to any civilized comma nity. The Terro Haute Express says pas? seneer trains will be put on the new St. Louis" road about the first of June. Mr. CaRMEL voted on Monday, on a proposition to aid the New Albany & St. LDuis Railroad. Ave presuma the aid was voted. The New Albany Cnmmercial, of Friday publishes, as local news, brief descnntion ot the seven won ders of the world." The Grand Lodge and Grand En campment I. O. O. F. of Indiana, hold their annual session in Indianapolis this week. The Studabaker Bros. Manufacturing Company, of South Bend, took the first premium on wagons and car riages at the -ecent fair in New Or leans. A correspondent of the Newburgh Recorder hopes the Republican Con vention which meets at Princeton will nominate Judge- Robinson as a candidate for Congress. Joseph Collett, President of the Evansville, Terre Haute & Chicago Railway Co., reports that the construction of the road bed is progressing very rapidly. Col. Pbescott, one of the principal contractors on the new Indianapolis and Terre Hauto road, thinks the last rail will be laid by the end of the present months. The Lafayette Journal thinks the earnest solicitude of the Indianapolis Sentinel, that the people of Tippecanoe County shall not be taxed as much as they ought to be, until the taxes can go into a Democratic Treasury, is ouchicg in the extreme. - !
Union has been as editor and proprietor. The Posey I County llecublicans ouaht to sunDort the Union. One hundred and eighteen patriot ic citizens of New Albany desire to serve the municipality on the police force. Bat twelve of them can have their desires gratified. The Washicgton , Telegraph Eays John Thomas, ot Daviess County, has lorty acres of corn from three to five inches high, and is now engaged in plowing it over. ' A MAN in Ripley County, Ind., kicked his daughter's beau out of doors, the other night, aoyd was shock ingly beaten therefor by the daughter, assisted by her amiable mamma. It is stated that the work on the Lafayette, Muncie & BloOmington railroad is beirg pushed forward as fast as possible, and the force of la borers is being increased daily. The Washicgion Telegraph speaks in glowing terms of the Republican ticket in Daviess County. .: It sav3 it vonlil Yarro heon i m nn; Mo in malrA I better selections than the men of .. - . ... The editor of the New Harmony Register is getting tired of making calls on delinquent subscribers, and will be compelled to resort to other means in order to keep cp' the cfiicc. The New Albany Ledger says the reaping and threshing machines and other agricultural machines, received by dealers in that city, ought to be manufactured in New Albany. Cer tainly. We manufacture them in Evansvilla. Prof. O'Kane, the famous vocal ist and musical composer, will attend the Indiana Conference Sunday School Convention in New Albany. So will J. H. Vincent, editor of the A bachelor club of Mt. Vernon have resolved that any member of the club who shall marry before January 1, 1871, shall be fined $25 and a bas ket of champagne, to be paid within ten days after marriage The Lafayette' Courier says that Mrs. Maoher, who was so brutally cut to pieces with an ax in the hands of her husband, has so far recovered as to be able to carry a plate of soup to I I , , .. . , 1 the brute who cow languishes in the countv jail. There's devotion lor you! New Albany seems to he m trouble over the subscription to the Louisville," New Albany & bt Louis liauroau. borne are claiming that the subscription is illegal, a majority of the tax-payers not having signed the petition on which the subscription was based. It is evident that Judge Morris S. Johnson is not the "Ring" candidate for Circuit Judge of tbis Judicial District. The Rockport ' Democrat County, that neither J udges Jones nor Johnson aro candidates, while Azro Dyer is very favorably spoken of in connection with the position. Let it be understood that Major Johnson is a candidate for Circuit Judge. The New York Standard describes McFarland graphically, and, no doubt, truthfully, as follows As we understand him, he was a thnttlcss, dreamy, literary man with enthusiasms and strange aspirations early moved by the teachings o Fourier, and recently more given to speculations upon Herbert Spencer and btuarc Mill, than to the more J worldly duty of earning a living for miLiseii auu lauiuy. man ui im pulse and high imagination, whose life was in a land of dreams! Even his marriage showed this for it was the marriage ot a man, ripened in life to a fresh young girl from the moun tains, young enough to be his daugh ter. It is not for us to go deeper into their married me, out he cer tainly loved her, with an intense ahsnrhinc. irenz pd love. We mIi)i 8trange glimpses of their union his fondness' for his children the childish awe with which he worshipped her, the way he prattled about her beauty. her accomplish ments, and her probable success on the stage, the extravagance of his endearments, his Irenzyand irresolu tion after the separation, as thousrh a great blow had fallen upon "him, and he knew not whither to look for aid hi3 wanderings from Tribune to In denendent. from mends to enemies. (if he had any enemies, which we doubt,) his midnight strolls, his un certainty and deep misfortune, all o this makes to Us a strange, graphic mournful character, more like one of Hugo's cr Balzac's creations than a living mm. Few will agree with the Standard, however, in regarding McFarland's marriage with a fresh young girl from the mountains possessing attractions both of body and mind as an indi cation that his "life was in a land of dreams." It strikes us that thi3 mar riage showed that the accused was not altogether a dreamer. Wiser men than McFarland have been captivated with "fresh young girls .from the mountains," and their marriage with them was not regarded as evidence that they were living in a land of dreams. Waterloo Revenged. Our Ene lish cousins are growling over the in vasion or Jjondon by an army of Irench tradespeople, who have literally taken possession of many of the principal fashionable streets, and, having started their shoos, are driv ing the British shopkeepers nearly distracted with their "confounded gibberish" and their low prices. There are now French shops in London for every conceivable thing. This hovel turn in the affairs of trade has com pletely bewildered Mr. Bull, and that very irasciole oia gentleman does nothing but swear at the h rencb. who shrug their shoulders and go on underselling bim with the most exasperating sang froid. Thus, not satisfied with dictating tho fashion for the world, the Parisians are revenging Waterloo by forcing the Britishers to bay everything of a fashionable na ture from them. We once read of a man mada of money; but just think of the Fenians who aro all " greenbacks."

So long a time had elapsed since then, that the name of the bank had esoaped his memory, and his hopes of regaining the money was very light; nevertheless, he wished the bank officers in this city to try and discover where it was. They consented, und closely expaper for a clue, which was at last found in the words 'for Saving?, which were printed on the top ot one ot the piece3, and had evidently formed part The location of this bank was found and a statement of the facts written on. Yesterday a letter was received here, which conveyed the gratifying information that on tho 11th of JJe cember, 1850, a deposit was made by a person of the name given, in the sum of 1510; the account still remained open on the ledger, and tho semi-annual interest had been added to the amount regularly, making a total, on the 8th of January, to the credit of the depasitor, of $1,415 721 For this sum the owner will send, without delay, a power of attorney, and will thus, in a few days, be possessed of a nice little stake to make the decline of life easy.
