Daring the first battle of Bull Run a Brigadier General discovered a soldier-concealed in a hole in the ground, and ordered him to join his regimeat. The man, looking him full in the face, placed his thumb upon his nose and replied: "No you don't, old fellow, you want this hole yourself." A. promising young shaver of five or six years was reading his lesson at

manner for which urchins of that age
are somewhat remarkable. As he

on the pasage. "Keep thy toDgue from

Tue Power of a Smile It is relitad in the life of William Hutton, that a countrywoman called upon him one day, anxtom to Fpeak with bim. She told him with an air of secrecy that her husband behaved unkindly to her, and sought other company, often passing his evenings from home, which made her feel very unhappy; and knowing Mr. Hutton to be a wise nan. she thought he might be able to tell her how she should manage to cure her husband. The case was a common one. and he ihoupht that he could prescribe for it. "The remedy is a simple one," said be, ' but I have never known it to fail. Always treat your husband with a smile." The woman expressed her thanks, dropped a courtesy, and went away. A few months afterward she waited on Mr. Hutton with a couple of fine fowls, which she brgjed him to accept. She told him, white a tear of joy and grat itude glistened in her eye. that she had followed his advice, and her husband was cured. He no longer sought the company of others, but treated her with coostaot love and kindness.
