It la well known that the union itself, which, in many respects,, has been productive of great, good to the people and cation of England, has long been regretted by churchmen.' It was the result, not of choice, but of necessity. Wars aad conquest, and the peculiar demasds of the Reformation, caused it. - All reformed countries in Europe at first formed such a union for mutual support. The only question likely to cause sharp discussion in the coming separation, will be the proper division of rights and properties pertaining to the Church. Public grants and private bequests, once of trifling value, now of greaii importance, willKjcasion much dispute, and demand ": prudence. I The rapid pro gross of the Episcopal Church in this country, upon the voluntary system, is a fact not lost in-the estimate. : The old residents of Indianapolis, as welTas the new, are making exten sive preparations for celebrating the fiftieth anniversary cf the., founding of their city with appropriate ceremonies. "Among others, an invitation was extended to Henry Ward Beecher, who responded in the following pleasant; letter: " Brooklyn; N. Y., May 6, '70. James Blake, Esq.: i ; Mr Deab Sia: If I could follow the suggestions of my feelings, I should certainly be present at the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Inaianapolis. But I am detained by imperative engagements, yet in spirit and enthusiasm I shall certainly be with you. f The year which I spent in Indianapolis almost tho first of my public life will always be memorable, and I must needs feel toward your city as I can not toward any other. Indianapolis has quite outgrown. my knowledge. I think of it as it was from 1S40 to 1S50, and whi!o I recognize the value ana Deauty or the cnaDges which have taken place in later year?, you will, i kcow, sympathize with mc when 1 say that 1 am mora interested in old Indianapolis than in the new. ' Your memory goes back to the be ginningjjou saw the strce's cut out ot the-primeval forest. I came iu time to see the stumps that were left, and to become acquainted with not a lew ot "them by running on to them in dark nights. If I were to rehearse all the memories that arise, a book would scarce suffice, i hope that y oh may have a memorable day, and that the services may be worthy of tho dear old ojty, hewn out ot the forest. 1 I am, very truly, yonr9, . Henry 7ard Beecher. - A Chance for Practical Christianity. The Chief of Police will have the hearty support of "all good people in the enorta which he has m. ugurated for the suppression of one oi tne puaiic vices-wnicn :nas grown to an alarming extent in this commu nity. It is a sad f):ct to contemplate, that the police of Boston could gather trom its streets in. one evening one hundred and sixty-five females, most of them young in year", but so de'based and degraded in sin : as were those who camo into their custody Saturday night. ; This movement of the police ought to lead the Christian men and women of Boston to at once ask themselves the question, if there is not a special duly devolving upon them in this matter. The police have done their duty. They have rid the streets of the psesence of these women, and probably have- pursued the wisest course in giving the great majority of them achance to reform and forsake their" evil ways. But in order to do that they must have sympathy -and aid. Many of them are homeless- and friendless, except as the haunts of vioe which they have frequented havo furnished them shel ter and companions more wicked even than themselves. Y here, are they to go if they turn from these vile places? V here are they to look fur a day a labor at honest toil to feed ; and clothe themselves? It U easy enough to say that they ought to reform and to be virtuous but where, under their present circumstances, can they look for the means to be so? : v The Christian women of Boston and vicinity have warm and sympathizing-hearts for their sisters in heathen lands, and nobly are they working for their civilization and conversion.--We wish that the sad fact which has been brought so prominently before their minds by the records of our Polica. Court yesterdayt might enlist their zeal in. the behalf of earnest, practical efforts for the salvation of these fallen women in our own city. Boston Journal. We. "ate pleased' to kaow that the christian ladies cf this city are making practical efforts for the reformation of the class of unfortunates re ferred to by the Journal. PaoaiiEss op Romanism. Accord iog toa'report made in the Method ist Ep'sconal Conforencc at'Philadelphia, the Roman Catholic Church had in the United States, ia 1800. one Bishop, about 100 priest?', ffud CO.000 adherents; but to day, according to the most reliable statistics available, Rome has in this country (a3 the growth of only eventy years) seven Archbishops, fifty-three " Bishops, 3.500 priests, 3.IS3 churches, fortynine Ecclesiastical Institutions (with 913 clerical students,) twenty-nice colleges. 128 monasteries, 2SG nunneries, 134 high schools for girls, sixty asylums, twen(y six hospitals. thirty - three periodicals (five beine English.) She has also eighteen
Cithollo book stores, a publication'
society, and probably a 4.000.000 of adherents Such is her ' strength to day. There are thus more Romanists in this country than in Ireland, and more priests and Papists in New York than ia the city of Dublin. An incident in Plymouth Church, Brooklyn, on Sunday last, serves a3 a good illustration of the remarkable changes that have come upon the country within the past ten yearf. Mr. Beecher 6tated that not long before the War the liberality of some j members of the church gave freedom j to a young slave girl.. Since that, she had received an education, and i3 now about to ecgsge in teaching her own people in tho schools at Washington. The collection yesterday was for the purpose df affording her a support for the coming year. It was a striking example cf the fitnees of things that the same church which saved her from shame and dishonor should now send her on in the work of enlightening others. But for the war and the overthrow of slavery, thi3 could never Lave happened.- The congregation responded liberally to the appeal of Mr. Beecher. Papal Infallibility. The Catholic clergy of the city of New York have, within a few days, made the Lnew dogma of the infallibility of the rone the subject ot sermons ot an explanatory or deprecatory character as if they were anticipating the ne cessity of accommodating themselvea to it. They 8re trying to get used to it, in some such way as the cgly man's wife learned to bear kissing, by prao ticing before marriage oa the old cow. nd. A etc. The Frot'Btant Ecnmenlcal Council In flew Tork Jfext September. As has been noticed in the news of the day. there is to be a large and dis tinguished gathering of Pratestant delegates from all parts of the world at New York next September. It is fa:d that since the reformation there have been but four such gatherings of xroiesianra eijeriin, raris, Amster dam and London. Quite an array of distinguished foreigners who are expeoted to be in at' tendance ia published. Tho Euro pean telegrams have quite lately added several mere names to the list. There will be present some of the leading divines and scholars of Holland, Switzerland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, England and elsewhere. The subjects for discussion have not yet been entirely determined upon, but among them will be the following; : The religious relation existing between America and Continental Europe, i The best methods of" counteracting modern infidelity. - The harmony of science and revelation. ; .'i.'. The. gospel and philosophy. Christianity and humanity. Family religion. Sunday schools. ' . Religious aspects of popular education, j ; : Religions education in the Southern States of the United States. A paper will probably be submitted in this connection, by the Rv. Dr. Barnes Sears, agent of the Ptabody Fund. ; i Christianity and the pres. Protestantism and Romanism under various aspects. Christianity and civil rovernments. involving the general exuestion of moral reform by legal enactments :a all its various'iorcis.'ag temnerr;nce( marriage and divorce, the observance of the Sabbath, etc., and as closely related to the same topic. Christianity and social evils. Christianity and Philanthropy. The above arc but soecimens of the general range cf subjects which will oe announced "in duo time in an ofh cial programme. " The scope of the gathering, as a representative Jrrotestant Assembly will be limited by the fact that the Evangelical Alliance, at its la-t meet ing, adopted a creed, making the re cognition of the divine inspiration' of tne Uia and xsew lestaments, ot the total depravity of human nature, oi the logical doctrines of the Trinity the atonement, and eternal punishment, and of the obligation of the two Christian sacraments, estential to membership. This creed, of course excludes from the meeting such im portant Christian bodies as the Unitarians, Universalisfs, "Christians," Friends and some othera. But there is no doubt that the meeting will be an inUuential ' and important council of that part of Protestant Christianity commonly known as "orthodox. PLANING MILLS. NEW FTLtm. B. F. TBlBZtE.
