Wo presume their wishes will bo respected. The ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment was appropriately cele brated at Lafayette yesterday. Gov. The Democracy of Daviess County are early in tho field with a county ticket, bade up as iollws: Clerk, Geo. S. Walters; Sheriff, J as. Graves; Treasurer, Win. Kennedy; Auditor, N. G. Now, wo don't be lieve O. O. did steal, but we do be lieve Fernando Wood." The Gratification of the Fifteenth Amendment threw tho Missouri De mocracy into a comatoso condition. from which they are but just recov ering. The Election Committee of tho House of Representatives still u has eighteen; contested election cases to settle one from Ohio, one from Indiana, one from Colorado, two from Missouri.; and tho- balance from the .Southern States. , Would it not bo delightful to oust sitting members near the close of the session, so that both they and the .contestants can pocket f3,000 each and mileage? , ! TnEjDcmocracy of the Fourth Congressional District are greatly disappointed over the Republican Convention, which resulted in the unanimous nomination of Judgo Wilson. They were anticipating a split between the friends of the Judge , and Hon. George Julian, with the probability cf both becoming candidates. When, however, the latter withdrew in favor of tho former, tho disgust of the .'Democracy could not bo described. - The contest in tho Fourth District is virtually decided before it is well begun. . Ocn credit abroad is daily becoming better. Mr. Boutweli's confidence that it will bo easy to fund the debt at a reduced rate of interest, is shared by such eminent foreign financiers as Bowles, Brothers & Co., of Paris. It-is an article which is tho material for an industry in the manufacture of iron which is infinitely greater than tho production of crude iron; and beyond thia it is tho labor saving machinery of almost every kind of production. Dear crudo iron dwarfs every kind cf industry in the country. If our ideas had not been raised to a height which transcends all reason, ?5 would seem a high duty on an article which is the rough material of all industries, t It would not increase imports, but would vastly enhance the consumption of iron, and would stimulate all other industries. It would reduce our imports of other forms of iron, of which in 1SGS we imported to the value of about twenty millions.'of which the importation of at least fifteen millions was forced by the high price of crude iron. CVt. The Frost and the Fruit. The snow storm and tho freezing weather of Friday and Saturday, bo general in the West, seems to have been particularly destructive to the vegetable gardens and fruit orchards in this vicinity. From tho accouuts received by us yesterday from various localities, wo gather that all the early
peach, pear, and cherry blossoms were fatally nipped by the frost. -The warm weather which culminated on Thursday night in a thunder shower, caused tee lruit trees to bloom forth mih unusual luxuriance and promise, and the tender petals and germs of the fruit were fully exposed to the snow and ice which, on the succecdnz days, fell upon and encased them. The result, as seen yesterday, was a wilted appearance of tho blossoms. the perm pf tho f ruit appearing as if scalded. Wo Iiodo the destruction has cot been so general as the fruit growers yesterday apprehended. Mistourt JJtmocrat. Maple Sugar.
