It will be remembered that 'tho Register was the first paper to break ground in behalf of tho nomin ation of the Judge, and that it got verv ancrv. when in a mild and gen ial manner, we called attention to tho tactic3 by which, it proposed to dis'po.ie of other opponents. Tho strategy which put , Judgo Parrett forward for Supreme Judge, only to get him out of tho way for Congress, worked like a charm. Wo presume' he may now be regarded as permanently upon the shelf. Judge . Davy Laird, who has "fit. bled and died" for the Democracy, timo and again, is- also out of the question. . CoL.Denby, of our city, who has been hitherto counted among the aspirants, being a young man, can afford to wait for three. or four more terms. . 1 We must say that Judge Niblack is a very clover fellow, and if we are to be represented by a Democrat, Buits us as well, if not .better, than any one .. else that the Democracy can, select. It is; pretty apparent, however, that our, District would derive much greater benefit by electing a Congress man who would be in harmony, poll tically, with tho Administration and Congress. Can't be Done. A correspondent cf the Louisville Courier' Joitrnal, writing from Madieonville, gives the following advice to the Louisville business men It is the opinion of a great many that your city should urge and de mand that the Elizabethtown and Pa ducah Ilailroad he so located as to reach this point. It is certain that a railroad will be constructed from this place to Shawneetown, Illinois, within the next two years. At Shawneetown it will connect with two roads, ono run- : ning north to Chicago, the other run- . ning directly to St. Louis.- The completion of the Madisoaville Shawneetown Straight-line road and its connection here with the Evansville. Henderson & Nashville Railroad, will make this r an important railroad town.. With its inexhaustible coal and timber, its pe-

lountains and its surrounding agricultural lands, this place must very soon take rank with the most important interior towns of the State. The advantage to your city of bringing tho Elizabethtown and Paducah road di - - rectly to this point from ireenTille is the turning to Louisville of an immenso trade that now goes to Evansville. This, Webster, and Union . counties would nOw send about six thousand hogsheads of tobacco to your city each year (every pound of which, now goes to Evansville and other points) if they had direct communication with Louisville. , We think- the correspondent ' is . greatly mistaken in", supposing that the completion of the Elzabethtown & Paducah road wilf draw trade from Evansville to Louisville. Our mer,.cbanta think differently.; So far from losingany of their trade, they anticipate that the completion of that road will largely", increase -it. r They are confident of their ability to compete . with tho "Louisville" merchants and . , manufacturers both in the quality! of goods and prices, and; rightly argue that the peoplo of Kentucky will buy . where they 'can, do so to the best advantage. The wheat crop in the same vicinity wants rain. . i It is said theio are eighty places in Floyd County, where liquors are sold without license, and small-pox cf a mild form. ' Two ancient volumes bearing date over two hundred years ago, were purchased reccutly for the Stato Law Library. Dauoheety, who is con fided in the jail at Kokomo, awaiting trial for killing Van Horn last fall, still has his name continued on the pay roll of his company, and will draw his pay until tho close of his trial at the Dext term of court. The New Harmony Register nomi nates Frank D. Bolton as a candidate for Auditor of Posey County, on the ground that a small share of the offices should be given to other town ships than the ono or two which havo heretofore monopolized them. From Franklin, Miami, Clarke, Whiteley, Fountain, Stark Laporte and many other counties throughout the State, the prospects for at least an average wheat crop are reported good. Tho prospect of the fruit crop ia a good deal m" red, and , we. are afraid will be a good deal more so, after the effects of the "cold snap" of the pa few days become apparent. TuE'Rev. Bishop Clark, presiding over ihe Conference at Kokomo, is the only one left pf the three last-elected Bishops of the Methodist . Church At the general Conference of 1864 held at Buffalo, Davis W. Clark, Cal vin Kingsley and-Edward Thompson were chosen, to i the Episcopaucy, or more truthfully, as General Snperin tendents. Of course, this doctrine would knock the whole pro-t tectivo system into everlasting smash: but it is exceedingly well calculated to servo General Buller's purpose. It will arouso the indignation of ' many simpletons in the West at ' this outrageous declaration of a representative from New England manufatirers that he wants to take off the duties in order to kill Western manufac-,1 tures.
