Tho name "Easter" .being of Saxon origin, the modern German being Otter, which is ;-id to eignifiy Spring, in tho ancient German. It is celebrated by most of tho Christian world, by peculiar festivities, and among many of the vulgar.by customs tbat have no rcferonce ta religion. Among thceo are tho oustom of makiag presents of fancy oalorcd eggs, which - was once carried to the extreme in England, where eggs were expensively and elaborately ornamented. - In , some parts , 'of tho world Easter eg js are usod as amcans of potty gamhliag, by etrikiDg tho pointed ends together to test their relative strength, the owner of tho stronger egg taking thoso he may succeed in breaking. !Io some parts of Canada. eg? pickera prcparo theuselves for the contest, sometimes preparing cunningly counterfeited ejgs of plaster, or by extracting the egg from the shell and fiHing it with wax or "plaster to doeievo their youthful victims and win their eggs. jXo Franco the custom once prevailed of'stoting Jews on Easter Sunday, and it is related of a certain dignitary that he considered it due to his dignity to have a 'Jew beaten in his honor upon that day. !In tho old' "Dutch" neighborhoods in New York and New" Jersey,' tfco festival is stilt koown as Paa, that being tho Hollandiah word for Pass-over.- ;,; ' "" , Criminal Court. The Cramer trial . 13 still in progress, and much amusement is sometimes created by the testimony f iven in. Other testiraony ia quite the contrary of amusing, being somewhat calculated to disturb tho equanimity of persons not directly connected with the case. '1 i Ycstorday one of the witnesses in answer to; a question from the prosocutor, switched off the track and delivered a small lecture on the tenacity of, first love. Captain Hargrave plied her persistently with questions, but got in return only a dissertation on Love its speculative and moral bearings, cVe., to tho intense amusement of the auditors. " , i Perkins McCarty writeu to Eb. Stcbbins to fay that he missed a big thiDg when ho failed to go to tha Trinity Festival. Perkins says the outlay of talent in getting up tho good things evinces that the young ladies of Trinity possess abilities that tempt him strongly to apply to Mr. Sorenson for a license to marry. The great number cf n;ce things, prepared ty so many nica young ladies, have so completely tnraed the good old fellow's brain that he forgets his years and decrepitude ; the Eight made him "wish he were a boy asain." A Wife Beater. A miserable brute, who lives not a mile from Pigeon Creek, having made it miserable for his wife and . children at home, beat his wife unmercifully on Thursday for being abroad in search of a truant child. - The cowardly scamp has thus far escaped punishment, but an officer has been especially deputed to look after him, and it is to lo hoped he will be caught if he repeats the cruelty, aad vanished as ho deserves.
Got Fcnisument ENOuan. Tho j Recorder yesterday morning had a ,
woman before him for assault and j battery. The woman was proven to have given a black eye to another I woman who had first done hex a simi lar service. The Recorder discharged her, apparently thinking she had punishment enough. The circumstance brings to mind a ca.so that came before Hans Swarthout, , tho Mohawk Justioe, wherein a man was proven lo have had four wives. "Four vifes?" exclaimed the astonished Hans, "four vifes? dit vass a most hinoeious criti.es! Dinsharch him at voust." . s "Why? 'protested the prosecutor, "Why discharge hira, when the proof is positive? Will the Court explain?'' "Yes, I cckshpiains. ' Oil he lifa mit four - vifes, he got bunishment enough, I lif mit von, and I got too much banishment already." Fire .is New Harmony. Mr. John 11. Gaushell, clerk of the Clara Soott, reports a fire in New Harmony, ou Thursday. The dwelling, kitehent and stable of Wm. Carr, watchman on the Clara Scctt, were-entirely consumed. Tho greater part of tho furniture was saved, but ail the provisions of the family were destroyed. The fira originated from children playing '.with matches in tha' barn. There was no insurance on the property, and the loss falls severely on Mr. Carr. , Fi xst Baptist CEURcn. 'Mr. Chaplin preached his last sermon last night.
