. Police Matters. The now police were sworn in yesterday, and went on duty last night. Mayer Walker was present at roll call, and read extracts from tho city ordinances concerning the duties of policemen, and gave the new1 officers some sound paternal advice i : Tho men are, on tho whole, about n average lot except as to size, being rather less than last year's force, numbering, in fact, not one tall man in the wholo lot. . ." Seven of them aro said to bo either Germans or of German parentage; four American?, two Irish and one English Tho now Chief , was present, and assigned tho men to their beats. It

A Man Fatally Shot. A man named Bidhop was shot bo that no hopes aro entertained of his recov ery, on a fiatboat, near the mouth of Green Kivcr, yesterday. It appears that the man who wasebot. and an other; Ijoarded the ' fiatboat from 'a skiff, and abused an old man on the flat. A vouni man on the fiatboat took the old man's part, when they attacked him, and. hcj.in defending himself, shot one of his. assailants with a shot gun, as above stated.
