AUNT MABEL'S STOKY. BY EDUA BKOOK.' "Isn't be a real darling, auntie? And with very pardonable pride the young mother held up her first-born, to receive the kind greeting of Aunt Mabel, who for the first time bad corns to pay a visit to her favorite niece. "lie is, indeed, a beauty 1" replied aunty, a3 she took the ten months old baby in her arms and fondly kissed his soft, dimpled cheeks. . But little Walter did not at all approvo of this, and his mother took him to the other end of tho room, whero tho bright rays of the afternoon sun, shining through the end window, fell on a wine decanter standing on tho table, lighting up the cut glass with a variety of brilliant colors. Forgetting Lis troubles, little Walter crowed with delight, and stretched out his tiny bands to trrasp tho attractive object, liis mother laughed merrily as she danced him up and down. "You can't have that, my Ron; that s no plaything for you, pet," but the baby screamed afresh and reached toward it. "Fie! baby; what a noise for auntio to hear there, little tyrant, will that do?" and she placed the Btorjper of the decanter in bis hands, and set him on the carpet; then drawing a footstool to Aunt Mabel's side, she exclaimed, "Now, dear auntie, 1 can talk to you; baby will be quiet a louse while with that new toy to play with." "Oracie, dear, don't spoil that boy of yours," Grace laughed "I'll try not, auntie, but ho will have bis own way, if possible;" and she psscd her hand over ber boy's curly l ead, as he sat gravely on tho floor, thrusting his new plaything into that ,eneral receptacle of all babios his n outh. "Look 1 auntie, ' said Graco. after a minute or two spent in admiring contemplation of her treasure; "only see bow the rogue is euckingthatstdpper! I do believe ho likes tho taste of tho wine on it; that's beginning early at any rate, isn't it?" And again she laughed merrily as sho spoke. But Aunt Mabel did not laugh. "Grace," she said, seriously, "do you mean to bring up your boy to be a water drinker?" . "I'm Buie I don't know, auntie; I've never thought about it; why should I? A little beer, or wine cither won't hurt bim when ho is older. ' Bdand and I always take it for dinner." : , , "Your husband is not a teetotaler, then?" . "Oh I no, be says it ia carrying things to great extremes to abstain altogcthr er; a little ale with his dinner, and a glass or two of wine after, does bim good; and he ia never pleaded unless I take soma too. I am "not strong enough to do without it, . he eays; tho?gb aB I te k'm that's just nonBame, j'ot'I'm a well as ever I can be." . . "You look so, at any rate, my dear," said her aunt; "and now, Uracie, I should like to tell you a short Btory about the friends in the North, whom I only left last week. You know I have been staying there a long time." "Indflcd you have, dear auntio; for I have been wanting you for the last thre months, and couldn't pet you; do let ria bavo your story ; but I know," she aided,- glancing at tho mourning ,dre53 of her relative, "it has been a vvcrv mournful time for you." "Inde i it has, dear; a very, very ruouraful time. Bat it is not of that I want to speak first; my story must data back many, many years; to a time when I wa3 not much older than -yau, Gracie, and as lull of life and lipe as you can possibly be now, I vcn nav'iKr a lone promised visit to Bomo f'riaids", when one day I was surjrised by receiving a note from an old and much loved schoolfellow, to invite mo to spend a long day with her that week, and to come to her for a longer Btay when roy visit to tho Duncan's should terminate. I was, indeed, delighted at this opportunity of renewing our friendship, and I did not fail to go over to Willowby Hall on tho appointed day, and was welcomed by Isabel with tho greatest pleasure and alection. With eagerness she showed me over her house and gardens, reserving till last the introductin to her chief treasure, hi r only child, a lovely boy of three summers, Isabel always dined early .with her boy when thcro was no company expected, and today was to he no excoptvn to the rule, for "she would not," eh said,-"make a stranger ot her old s jhpoi friend Mabel." There was another visitor present, howeyerIsabel'seldeU brother, who- had just returned tj this country after" many years' abseneo and, had arrived only the night before on a short visit to bis sister. Mr. Willowby was away from Lome on business, much to Isabel' regret, who wished to introduce ruo to her husband ; so we were a small, but very merry party; tho quaint remarks volunteered by little Cyril add ed cot a little to our amusement. It waa ovident Isabel epoiled the precious hnr. but I thought it was not much to bo wondered at he was such a bright, loving, intelligent little fellow. , When the servant in waiting filled our glasses from the jug of fresh drawn a'o. which, however. I noticed ihat Mr. Stewart declined to touch,- it was with Bomo surprise 1 saw the little boy's silver cup wad half-filled too, and that he raised it witn . eagerness to his lips. Mr. Stewart spoke the thoughts that were in my , mind by exclaiming, "Isabel! surely you don't 1st that child drink ale?" Isabel Jauzhed. "Yes, Cordon, he always has a little ho i not strong, andSit does liOT good; he likes it, too; don't you pet?" . . . . , "Do-you think it wise and right, Isabel, to let that child get a liking for drinks of that kind while he is go younor?" "Why. Gordon, what barm can it do bim?" "A great deal, I should pay. Ale is quite unfit for.ajcbild of his years especially for one so sensitive and excitable as Cyril." "Bat, fjrordon, it id suoh ; little drop ho "has scarcely more than a tablcspoonful it can't, possibly hurt him'.- iw.:: ' " "Well setting anide- the ; physical Jiarm it may or may not do to him, it may do him an immense amount of moral injury; while he is too young to have any principle about the matter. you foater and encourage in your boy a liking for intoxicating drinks. , By he time ho ia old enough to have his pnsnciple3 established, the liking he has ac-mired may be strong enough to bear down those principles altogether especially under .the self-indulgent system you are likely to pursue with bim. I say the liking he has acquired, because I firmly believe no child who has net Veen educated to like beer or wtno will ehooso ; it in preference to water. Did Cyril take it willingly at first?" ....... . . . "No, indeed, be didn't; it was fun to see tho faces he made at it; but I made : him take it I am sure it strengthens bim and he likes it now; I have no peace if I don't give it to bim."
"That exactly bean out my theory, replied Mr. Stewart, "that a child's natural drink is water, and it will choose no other if not taught to do eo. Place beer or wino before cither of my littlo ones, (you know I have half a dozen such treasures as this youngster), and they will unhesitatingly turn from it; not. only becauso papa would be displeased if they touched it, but because they really dislike it ; and to force them to take it would be as distasteful to them as the sometimes necessary dose of physic. Isabel, do give up this habit of indulging your boy in what is morally as well as physically dangeroua for bim to takel I am much older than you, and my longer experience in such matters bids me warn you. Do be advised by me; take that cup from tho child at once, and giro him water instead; not only to-day, but regularly iu future." Isabel looked half convinced. "Will my pot give mama his cup?"she asked coaxingly of her boy. "Not". replied tb.3 little fellow decisively, at the Bame time grasping bis goblet firmly with both tiny hands. Isabel did noi persevere. "Never mind for to-day," she said, carelessly: "he ba3 "almost "finished it, and I don't want to regale Mabel's ears with a squall. . I'll think about it, bowevtr. Gordon, dear," she added, winningly, "so don't look so grave; and the conversation glided into another channel. Tho rest of the day passed pleasantly away; and at parting, Isabel made me promise that in a fortnight's time I would return to pay her a long visit. Little did cither of us think that in less than half that timo I should be summoned home to stand by the dying bod of nay beloved father. , I concluded to moebow. ,
