Thursday night was their list visit, when tbey stole several dollars worth of provisions. JCSyFor onco at least, the motion of the Courier deserves a second; that on Lamplighters, saying that they ought to have enterprise enough to light tho street lamps when the moon fails to keep its appointments. Last night the, city was wrapped in impenetrable darkness just because Ayer's almanac said tho moon would shine. and the lamplighters were too lazy to seo whether it was true or not. f Palm Sunday. To-morrow is Palm Sunday, eo called in commemo ration of the triumphal entry of the Savior into Jerusalem, in an humble garb, and riding on an ass. - On this occasion the people came out to meet him. strewing palms in his path, and cryinjr, "Ilosanna in the highest, llessed i$ Be that comelh in the narne of the Lord." The Episcopal, Lutheran and Cath olio Churches celebrate tho Sunday with appropriate services, and ornament their churches with evergreens, in commemoration of the event. Burglary. Gumberts' Ware house, cn tho alley, between Main and Sycamore, and in the rear of Loewenthal'a clothing house, was broken into on Thursday night, and twenty-three mink skins and a sack of feathers stolen therefrom. The porter who discovered the burglary yesterday morning, traced the feathers by those the thieves had dropped in their flight to a house on Main treet, where they had been sold by twa negroes. The person who bought them frbfly gave them up, but the thievefl haro not yet been taken.
State Sunday School Convention. Quite a number of officers and friends of the Sunday Schools of the city met last night at the Walnut Street Presbyterian Church, to mako arrangements for the coming State Convention, to be held in this city on the 7th, Sth and Sth of June. Alvah Johnson, Esq., was calhd to the chair and John W. Foster acted as Secretary. A full conference upon tho subject of the Convention was had, and it was the general expression that our citizens should leave nothing undone to mako it a success. Tho prospects aro that it will be largely attended from all parts of the State and by distinguished Sunday School men
from other States, and it will devolve upon our people to give them a cor dial reception and a generous entertainment. It will bo an excellent opportunity to bring our city to the favorable notice of very many citizens of distant parts of the State who visit us for the first time. Tho meeting, before its adjourn ment, selected the following commit tees: Committee on Entertainment D. G. Mark, W. E. French, A. Johnson, W. C. Turnock, W. T. Iglchart, C. Keller, C. Decker, 3. Q. Miller. On Finance II. S. Bennett, James L. Orr, W; Brown, J. W. Foster, J. C. Dusouchet, W. F. Nesbir, J. O. Pittinan, James L. Curniek. On Music 0. C. Gcnung, M. Z. Tinker, C. Tileston, S. N. Curniek, Dr. I. Haas, W. W. Tileston, T. W. Simpson, C. K. Drew. On Literature and, Museum F. M. Thayer, II. W. Cloud, L. Iluffacr. The Cnuuca Sociable. Tho pros pects of rain last night and the light rain that fell, lessened, to a consider able extent, tho attendance at Ma sonic Hall, which was by no means as crowded as on Thursday night. Nev ertheless there wa3 a very fair at tendance, and the enjoyment was no less real and rational. 1 here was a great abundance of the most delicious refreshments, and the tables were well patronized. The candy stand. which was managed with such marked ability on Thursday night, was placed in the center of tho room, and was point of strong attraction to the little folks, and proved a paying institu tion. The flower stand was also lib erally patronized, many very elegant boqucts being sold at liberal prices In fact, wo might say that tho flower market was active, and prices well maintained. " The ladies have done themselves infinite credit in this affair, and we are glad to learn they realized a handsome sum from admission 'fees and from their tables on Thursday, as well as from the grand lunch yesterday, which was largely attended, liberally patronized, and universally pro nounced tho finest ever set in this city. Tho delightful musio by lienry Hart's String Band was greatly ad mired. Tho ladies extend their cordial thanks to all who contributed to and patronized their soeiable. The Locsiana State Fair. Evansville manufacturers are to be represented iu tho Lousiana State Fair, which will be held at New Oi leans in tho latter part of this month, by Messors. II. F. Blount k Co., Win. IToilman and Thomas Soantlin & Son. Blount & Co. exhibit four "Urio" plows and ono cotton cultivator. wQ will be a credit to tho fi m and to tho city. Mr. Hcilman will exhibit a portable Bteam engine; and Messrs. Scantlin & Son a patent stove, and a large BUgar evaporator. Uther manufacturers may also exhibit there, but the above are all the Evansville exfcibitors who have thus far made known their intentions. Tho party will start about tho 15th. Several ladies aro expeeted to go with the party. Democracy. Private advices from Parko County say that tho Democrats of that county intend to run a negro on their ticket for soino county offico. Some prominent Democrats invited a consultation with tho leading colored men of the county, a few days since, and urged them to select ono of their own color for Recorder and the Democracy would run him for that office. . , In Terro Ilauto they are also reported to bo trying to get a negro to run for tho Council. In Evansville they say that it was the negro vote that beat tho Republicans, by driving off white men from the party, and at the samo time boast that largo numbers of negroes voted the Demooratio ticket. 1 As Stebbins says, these Democrats aro very "seldom" people. ' J6t5'The Courier Bays that a negro was told by a white man that having sworn in fourteen voters in ono Ward, that he had sworn enough and had better go away, That is a very mild way to put it. This is how it is related by a bystander. The colored man offered 1 to swear to the citizenship of the fifteenth, when a blear eyed sot, who was working in tho interest ' of tho temperance candidate, roared out: "Here, get out o that ye black rashcal, ye can't swear anny more here. Ba gorra ye done swearin enough ; now be off wid yiz." The peace loving colored man," intimidated by the bully, went away. And this intimidating speech was approved by the assembled Democracy.' No wonder you say "no comment." , .T Wouldn't Cowiiidx. Tho woman whom the colored Lydia sought, on Thursday, came to tho city yesterday and sought out the colored " blonde," to get the promised whipping. At sight of the object of her wrath, tho colored Lydia, instead of giving the promised whipping, ' skipped out." A great noiao, til7 paes and no blows wero tho result. i
