An engagement has been made with Miss Olive Lofcan, tho celebrated lecturer, to epcak at the Opera House on the 29th inst., cn the very interesting subject of "Girls." Wo predict a largo audience on tho occasion. The lecture will bo delivered under the auspices of tho Library Association. C5?Thc Democratic papers in this city aic making iun of an old darkey who said ho was'nt born in the United States, but in Kentucky. Here ia another little laugh for them. A white Democrat says that John Greek is not a Penusylvanian, but an American. IIoeom aro eaey. I. O. O. F. Installation Tho officers elect of Crescent Lodge No 122, wero installed last night by Mr. Konald Fisher, D. D. G. M. The officers of Morning Star Lodge No. 7 will be publicly installed on Thursday evening. Tho Daughters - of ltcbecca will bo present in regalia, and the public aro invited. General Shackelford will deliver the addross Marvelous 1 Tho city election in Owensboro, Ky., passed off quietly on Monday. Tho negroes voted with out molestation, about one-third of them voting tho Democratic ticket so rumored. The Dcmooratio ticket was elected cf course. Negroes voto in Kentucky I "Carry mc back to old Virginnyl " But alas they voto there also. Post Festum. The German papers of this city aro disputing about post ftsium news, but an amusing result of tho election was a post festum oration at tho Third Street Engine House, yesterday, by a Democrat. He said " I bos no prej'ds agn'th nigger hio butimo 'posed the Ffftcenthmenmcn, on mo'l pri'epl, I hie bee." That was what ailed him. Steam. Tho word steam, often used to indicate energy, has a double meaning when applied to W. CTurnock & Co., corner Pino and First Streets, for those gentlemen not only display a fitticg amount of energy and etcam, but do any amount of steam fitting also, having all the nccccssary appliances to that end. They havo sonic of tho best modern machinery for doing work in their line, which includes brass foundry and finishing work, and when our new water works aro introduced they will bo prepared to do all those varied jobs of plumbers brasn work, which will then be in demand.
Art in a New Phase. -The ingenuity of Parisians is proverbial, and in nothing is it more apparent than in the varied and . beautiful forms in whica they present their
perfumeries. In Mr. Schltcpfcr's drug store, corner of Main and Second Streets, eomc of the most novel and ingenious of tbeso productions arc on exhibition. Handsome imitations of grapo clusters which lie imbedded in loaves, on examination provo to bo clusters of email bottles filled with bwect per fumes. Imitation pistols, that arc nything but offensive, prove to bo of the samo nature, their use bfcing to shoot a ppray of sweetness over the victim whose admiration only is challenged. This establishment, over which Mr. Schlacpfer so ably presides, is per haps one of tho most complete, in all tho details that go to make up a perfect Drug Store, in the United States. Commencing ia the humblest capac ity, Mr. Schlacpfer has steadily risen through all tho various gradations in his profession, until thero is cot a de partment of his business that he is not familiar with, from tho fillirg of a bottle of castor oil to tho compounding of tho most important prescrip tion ; hence, in his place can bo found everything that appertains to the trade, including all those innumerable articles known to the trado as Druggist's Sundries, a term a3 broad as that of Yankee Notions, for it covcis everything that is not strictly medicines, taking in, in this instance, even fishing tacklo. rocket books aro here, ranging from ten cents, by advances of five and ten cents, up to five dollars each. Toilet articles through all the varied lists of oombs, brushes, soaps, hair oils, dyes, rcfctoratives and rencwers; tho magio comb, that transforms an octogenarian's snowy locks to luxuri ant brown or black; and not tho least important of all is Schlmpcr's E.iu Lustral, which ho prepares himself. In combs he has everything except thoso which Mrs Partington sought for bo long catacombs. Tho prescriptions put up at this house have reached tho advanced number of 42,257, and so great is the business in this line, that accommodations for three persons to work at once have to bo provided, while of ordinary medicines tho stock and va riety Eeeina as endless as the ailments that beset tho human race, somo of which are put up and presented in such an attractive form that ono is almost persuaded to think it would bo a luxury to be sick and havo to tako them. In fact, Schlaepfer's is a marvel ol completeness. A Walk Around. An evening walk is a very pleasant thing especially if you havo tho companiouahip cf of an intelligent and etylLh young lady. If you can not pcrsuado &uch a young lady to accompany you, or if it happens to bo election night, and the victorious party arc rendering it unsafe for a modest young lady to be abroad, go alone; go as 1 did, around the highways and by-ways of tho city. and prolong the walk until the late watchc3 of the night. Away down in Lama?co where theso innocent lambs have been ac customed to disport themselves in in nocent gambles, there was rejoicing. Thcv eathcred ia group3 of five, ol ten. and of twenty, and iu hundred. and giving expression to their joy, lifted up their voices ana nueu up glasses filled with liquid rejoicing, and rejoiced. And as tho fluid rojoiceingly descended, fluently did their songs of joy arise, and tho burden thereof was "rejoice." "Eejoico yc humble sons of thcCaucassian, for the arrogant Ethop'an, who hath long exalted o'er us, is rebuked. Rejoice." As tho night advanced, tho rejoic ing and tho sounds thereof became fainter and the rejoicing parties fur ther apart; and as tho occasional cx plosion of firo crackers on the night of tho Fourth of July denote tho do pletod pockets of the yomtbful patriot, so the occasional musical sound, untransferable to paper, died away as the stimulus of tbe whisky lost its ef fect. Oat on Main Street, seated on the step of a ptoro, one belated indi vidual sat, his head resting on his hands; his stomach revolting at his bacohanalian habits, poured forth its protest in an oflensivo torrent. Fainter and fainter grew the noise, and when at last the weary printer Bought his home, ouc poor oppressed Anjlo-Saxon alone was left of all the rejoicing throng. , He, in his devious meandcriog, had taken too wide a range, and by an un lucky step had fallen into the cellar of Wiltshire's semi-ruin, and gladly accepted the aid of the printer to get him out again. " Well," Baid ho, as he shook him self and got hia locomotive powers once more in motion. " I know that place used to bo there, but I thought they'd changed it into tho Eighth Ward, so I didn't look.sharp. I tell ye, yo got to look sharp after theso black Republicans. Ain't that so?" Tho last seen of him, he was hur rahing for tho white man's ticket. Eb. Stebbins. Church Sociable. We hope that no ono who has a truo appreciation of rational social enjoyment and a de sires to combine duty with pleasure. will fail to remember the Church So ciablo to bo given to-morrow night, at Masonic Hall, by the ladios of the Vine Street Presbyterian Church. We arc confident it will be worthy the most liberal patronago, and thoso attending will feel happier for many days to come. Interesting Operation. An iacrestinrj surgical operation was performed yesterday, on Mr. Dallas Merccr.of Madisonville, viz Graefe's modi
fied linear extraction of a cataract. It was performed by Dr. J. MagcnUs in tho presence of several other physicians of this city, but the ulti mate result of it cannot be known for several days yet. It is an operation seldom performed, requires great care, and is not always successful in restoring sight. Dr. Magcniss also extracted a calcuhts from a female patient, at the Asylum, yesterday. She had been suffering intensly for a long time, and was sent to tbe Asylum a few days ago in most excruciating cgony. Sho is cow doing well, and will soon be about again. In Good Spirits. The Republi cans generally were disposed yester day to accept tho result of the city election philosophically, and in good spirit. The expression on all sides among the truo men of the party was, that it was bnt a temporary local reverse, which could, and would bo turned to advantego in the future contcsis with the old enemy of progress and equal rights, Evanavillc and Vanderburgh County aro yet truo to Republicanism. Personal. Prof. Gow, Superintendent of our City School, leaves for Indianapolis to day, to attend a meeting of the State Board of Education to-morrow, called specially to fill several vacancies on the Board of Trustees of the Stato University. Gen. James C. Vcatch arrived in the city yesterday to make his arrangements to enter upon the duties of the United States Collector's ofSco. Ho goes up to Princeton this morning, and will probably tako possession of tho office to-day. The Caumi Railroad. Mr. Chas. P. Clark, an engineer ia tho employ of parties in St. Louis, is now in this city organizing a party to survey tho route of tho Oarmi Railroad. When ho has finished hia estimates, the Company ho represents will build the road cither at a given prieo or for a per ccntago on tho cost thereof. A Card to tho Public. In tho extrcieo of my privilego, I voted at tho city election tor the sentiments and principles to which 1 had been truo in tho drk days of my race, and in favor of tho party which had been truo to mo and my people. All reports to the contrary aro malicious and false, as can be established by the officers of the election Ward who counted my ticket. J. B. Glenn. Tobacco Sold.
