Brass. Thia valuable metal, which ia supposed to bo typical of impu denco, is a matter ot real merit as utilized by Messrs. W. C. Turnock & Co., corner of Pine and Fir6t Streets. There it is converted into all manner of gooda useful to steam and gas fitters. Besides making nearly all the brass goods required by tho machinists of the city, they supply nearly all that is.rcquircd by the packets running to and from this port.

C. and tho fchepherd of the Second Ward lambs, the flock assembled last night at the Central Market. The head quarters of St. Willard, the convert, who prays eo loud and long for the prohibition of liquor Belling, were at Schaoka' lar-roou, where a large muslin sign invited tho reader to vote for Willard Carpenter. Peter Acker, Esq., presided, and Tim. Gavisk was Secretary. llallying and Challenging Commit tees wero appointed, and a long awkward pauso was endured patiently. while a messenger went for Mr. Carpertcr, and returned with tho word that he was ill and could not como Aleck Wilson apologised for his absence. Calls were made for Mann Whittlesey, Williams, Menifee, Wilson and lludd, but Mann only report ed. Ho announced that negroes would vote, and advised the Demo crats to spend Monday in trying to find out whether they wero white or not. Ho rambled and talked against time, to hold tho crowd together; in fact, he answered Tom. Moore's description of " A very little man. Who had a Utile soul. Ami he Hul l, Utile soul let ut try J f It's not within our reach Just to make a little speech, tfetwttn Utile you and little 1." Aleck Wilson succeeded, and said that the colored man might voto if ho chose, eo f ir as ho cared. He would not stop them if ho could. Whittlesey was called, and mounting the Btand, said ho did not intend to speak much, but if they would listen, he would say a littlo something. Ho asked, " Will you allow the Fifteenth Amendment to be crowded down your throats? " "I havo no prejudice against tho negro, but until the law is passed by Congress to carry that amendment into effect, negroes shall not vote." "Are you going to bo cowards and allow yourselves to bo crushed away from the polls by the negro? Where is tho maa that will show the white feather? It is your duty to say they shan't vote." "Stand up lor your rights and libcrtioi, and if tho negro votes, wo will take his voto because wo can't help ourselves." Applauso "It ia your duty to see that the election is carried in the interests of tho white man. Unless they produce thia law, you have tho samo right to drivo them away from the polls that you have to drivo away other porsons who aro not entitled to voto.' " If tbo right lo vote ia worth anything, it is worth fighting for." Tho extracts in quotation marks ara verbatim reports, and can bo proven by the oaths of more than one person. Rep. Mr. Whittlesey spoke with much apparent excitement, ana was violent ia mannor as well as speech. After he had concluded, tho band played a soothing piece, and Van Riper appeared, smiled, said a few words and retired. Ho was succeeded by Leroy Villiams, E.q.. who made 6omo Lumorous remarks. Williams is tho man who offered to defend disorderly Dem ocrats until after tho election without charge, and the next day prosecuted one for a feo. Tho band played several tunes aud went home, tho crowd lingering lov ingly around Schanks bar-room, whero A. W. C. disbursed filthy Iucro for drinks to float his father into the Council. From Tennessee. Major Gardner, of Martin, Gardner & Co., wno nas been travelling in West lenncssco and Kentucky, reports that country as not only very quiet, but prosperous. Money is reasonably plenty among the planters, and a very friendly feeling to Evansviilo prevailing among tho pcoplo, who ship almost all their tobacco here. Tho Journal's market reports aro eagerly sought for. The Major saw Hon. Emerson Etheridgo, enacting Lincinnatus by dropping corn in his field, assisted by a colored man. Justice Emery's Court. Henry Wolff was fined ?5 DO lor assaulting Mrs. Hugo, and had Mrs. Hugo arrested for provoking tho assault. The evidence was very mixed. Three witnesses wero sworn, and they, with ono or two outsiders and the accused parties, insisted on all talking at once in a jargon that was composed of German and English, but yet bore but little rcsemblanco to cither. Ihe Justice was made to understand that ono of tho parties deserved a fine, after they had repeated tho stories two or three times each. I. O. O. F. Installation. Resolutions l'asscd and Ectfrralnatlon to Vote Kxpmscd. A call was circulated during yesterday for a meeting, and last night tho colored citizens met at Mc Johnston's grocery. Mr. Edward Carton was called to preside, and Mr. Columbus Johnson, made Secretary. Speeches were made by tho Rev. Green McFarland, Wm. II. Gray and Basil Jenkins, Esqs., tho latter being called out twice. Tho tono of the speeches by the above named colored gentlemen wero chiefly congratulating their fellow colored citizens on their admission to their Ions denied rights, and in expressions of thankfulness to the Republican party for the tenacity with which it persisted in pressing tho admission as a simple act of justice to the colored man. Speeches wero also made by Major Mattison, Col. Buchanan and Alex Darling, Esq . after which the tallow ing resolutions were passed: Hesolved. That we recognize the hand of Almighty God in tho privi leeea conferred upon us as a race Resolved, That wo acknowledge as our friends the Republican party Their principles shall be our principles; their prosperity shall bo oui nrnsncritv. Places of meeting for colored men wero then appointed for each Ward It was reported that Captain Elles tho Democratic candidate for Alder man in tho First Ward, had an agent at work trying to seduce colored men to vote for him, notwithstanding his declaration that ho wouldn't have a nigger vote. The meeting was mainly composed of colered men, and wa3 most orderly and dignified throughout its session. jBaT The Courier displayed its enterprise during Thursday by surreptitiously possessing itself of tho insido pages of the Journal, that are worked off during the afiernoon, and confessing the theft by attempting to answer some of tho matter therein contained. Fire in Independence- Mr. Wm. Siuder reports that Little Brothers' dry-house, at their stave factory, in Independence, took fire yesterday afternoon, but was extinguished beforo any considerable darnago was done. Thieving. Mr. Sam. Meyer, furniture dealer, had a new pair of pants stolen from his houso Thursday night, by somo one who probably wanted to voto tho Democratic ticket in good clothes, for onoo in his lifo at least. Martin Stolz was appointed inspec tor of election ia tho Sixth Ward, in nlaco of J. A. Keis, declined. In the matter of openiag out Oak Street, Mr. Doughty insisted on the measure. A vote oa it resulted in tie, and tho Mayor voted nay, and it was negativea. The Chief Engiueer of the Fire Department read his report before the Council, and asked for an appro priation lor printing tne same. Our advices from Fittsburg aro to the effect that de luglng rains have prevailed lor two days, and that the river la again rising fast, with every indication or a destructive uood. The rains extended as far south as Louis ville. There Is scarcely a doubt of a dlsas trous flood in the lower Mississippi, as the upper Mississippi and tho Ohio, with all their tipper tributaries, are at almost flood bight. We admonish our friends along the river, ol the almost certainty of a great flood, and warn them to prepare for It. No time Is to be lost In the work of preparation. The liver here was rising steadily and rapidly last night. The additional arrivals and departures up to midnight, include the Hartford, from Car mi ; Clara Scott, from Wabash River; Pine Bluff, from Cannelton; City of Evansvllle, to Cairo; Rapldan to Eastport; Evansvllle, from Bowling Oreen; Far West, Pittsburg to Fort Benton; Emma Floyd, Nashville to Cincinnati.
