C.Caperton, of Mayfield, Ky., to be their future Pastor. He haa gone home on a visit, and will b? absent only one Sabbath. Ir i estimated that 100,000 copies of Beecher's lecturo on tho ,Episeo pal Church," will be printed and cir culated within six months from the time it was delivered. j The Ilev. Dr. Boll. Hector of the Church of tho Advent, Boston; has been delivering a series of lectures on the incomparable marriage scrvico of the Episcopal Church, the general subject being "Holy Matrimony." They have excited great interest in Boston, and aro soon to be published by the Riverside Press. The Boston Courier says "a practical female in that goodly city" would not allow her daurhter to attend Dr. Boll's lectures on "Holy Matrimony." "No, my dear; matrimony, like patrimony, is a matter of dollara and cents, and such discourses can be of no service to fashionable society." "Won't Dbaw. In the Third Ward the Republicans have nominated Sam. Archer, a person who has distinguished himself for his bigotry and temperance-isms. That numbers of hitherto Democrats will not only vote for Dr. Mulhausen, but work for him with all their might. Democrat. The JDemoltfat is hard to please. In one paragraphs it condemns the Republicans for nominating saloonkeepers, and in another for nominating temperance men. The truth is, the Republicans nominated the be3t men, regardless of their occupations. The Democrats would : have done well to have emulated their example. "Wonderful. - The Republican tickets for Councilmen in the first seven Wards are very wonderfully arranged. In the first three, where American Republicans have the preponderance, three strong temperance men and bigots; in the Uourth a liquor dealer; in the Fifth a saloon keener; m the bixth a maltster : in the Seventh a brewer. How are they strapped together? Demokrat. We copy the following answer to the above from the Courier tho cnglish edition of the Demokrat. of Thursday: We presume the radicals put in nomination old Bill. Bedford for Councilman on account of his disposition when drun k to disturb Democratic meetings. As a peace disturber he has proven himself a success. When the proprietor of two paper?, both dailies, assays a two-horse act. he ought to make his horses run better together. By so doing, be may save himself many ridiculous falls. We understand that Mr. Van Riper bases his claim for the vote. of tho tas-payers of tho Second Ward on the ground of personal and political liberality. He is in favor of increasing the indebtedness of the city twofold, and, of course, making the taxes to correspond. We maintain that such a policy will be suicidal. The obligations cf our city, including the subscription to the Carmi Railroad, already amouut to one viillion dollars, bearing an annual I iatercst of at least ?S5,C00. Oar present tax duplicate, burdensome as are the taxes, only amounts to $200,0C0. Hence it will be Been "that the debt cannot possibly be increased without largely increasing the' burdens of taxation. - To add ' half a million to the indebtedness of the city, however the money may; :be spen ia to 60 tardea property with taxation as to drive out capital that k we Lave rather than attract it to us from other points. Mr. Van Riper's ,lujy would simply be ruinous, and r Qlt in crushing out the energies and prosperity of all classes.
Water Works-farty Spirit.
It mst be very annoy ids, even to Democrats, to have their paper continually, laboring to make party capital out of every movement inaugurated for the Benefit of the city. Nothing can be 6ugscstcd that the Courierlloes not attempt to press into tbe service of the Demociatic party. We know that this is disgusting to somo cf the most prominent Democrat3 in the city, for they have repeat edly told us so. The question ot wa ter works has been revived. A com mittee of gentleman, from both parties, have examined into the matter, discussed it at some length, and finally agreed upon a plan. The Courier thiuks it has discovered a rare chance to make a vote, and hence the following which we clip from that psper of yesterday: If the Radicals succeed in getting a majority of the next council, they propose to tax the people to build a waterworks. X hey want the city to take two-fifths of the stock and let the bankers and bond speculators have the other three-fifths. This would give the private stockholders the controlling Btock, and a3 soon as the work has so lar extended as to make it a paying institution, they would have the Radical Council sell the city stock at 10 or 15 cents on the dollar, and the Radical pets of the Council would get it all. Thus the people would be taxed to build the works, and then present it to a set of men who would never let a poor man wash his face without nayins for the water. Divide the stock the other way, and let the city have the controlling amount of stock, and the thing would not be so objectionable. 1 he city u amply able and ought to take all the stock, and then make the water as free as possible for the use of the peoplo. The city hersen win De a large consumer, and we don't propose that the Deocle be taxed to pay these stockholders. The people sbouli elect a Democratic council, and let them build the water works and run it ior the benefit of the people who pay for it. Tho Courier imagines that its read ers den't remember from one day to another what appears ia that paper. The above is a case in point. Turn ing to the Courier of Thursday we find the followiog account of the Water Works Meeting Dr. M. J. Bray then proposed that the committee recommend the building of Water Works, and that the city take stock to the amount of $1S0.000, which was thought to be fcufiicient to construct the works. To this proposition Mr. John A Reitz offered an amendment to the effect that a company be organized with a capital stock of flSO.OOO, and that the city take two filths of the Btock. and citizens the balance. It wa3 understood that if $180,000 was not sufficient to build the works, the city should increase its subscription pro rata with the cost. Messrs. Bray and Reitz are not classed among the so-called Radicals. To the best ot our information neither of them are running on the Radical ticket for Councilman. They are both enterprising and public spirited citizens, who regard the wants of the city, and are alwaj's prompt to lend a helping hand. Some weeks ago, long before the Courier discovered that there was aDy party capital to be made out of the construction of Water Works, the Journal advocated the construction of the Works by the city. Yet while doing so, we were aware of the disadvantages connected with the adoption of that plan. Bat this qaestioa we will discuss more at length at tsome other time. We will only state here that if the tax-payers think they can stand an increase of their taxes equal to doubt what they now pay, we will bo in favor of the city building tho Water Works. Unless they will consent to such increase of taxation, it is physically impossible for the city to build tho Water Works, and meet the debts it has already contracted. The question, therefore, of the city's ability to construct the Water "Works, depends solely upon the willingness of taxpayers to double the amount of their taxes. - NEW PUBLICATIONS. Cincinnati; KonKBT CLARKK & Co. The "Holy Grail," called nore commonly the "Sangreal," was the cup that the Savior drank from at the f Last Supper." The legend is that it was given by Christ to Joseph of Arimathea, whose descendants brought it to Europe, and kept it for the admiration ol believers. ut one of them chancing to look lewdly on the partially exposed . person of a youcg lady pslgiim one day, the cup was taken off by supernatural interference and never seen again till it was found aboard a vessel upon which "Sir Golahad," "Sir Bohort," and "Fir Pereivale " and the sister of the last, chanced to come in a narrow gap, between two rocks "passing great aod marvellous." It, with the
silver tabic it rested upon, covered l
a. .. .1 with "red Samite, was taken to the city of" Sarr3S," whore it performed miracles, lhe ivnights ot Js.mg Arthur's "Round Table" were the searchers for the "San ereal," 6et thereon by information from Merlin, the magician, that it was still to be found, and would be the everlasting salvation of whomsoever would find it. Their adventures, or some of them, are the material -of which the Poet Laureate has woven this volume. There are some fine poetical phrases in the book, but, as a whole, we must confess we were not greatly charmed with it. The plot Eeems strained and overwrought. The thread is too slight for the great weight of words which it is made to support. Ad mirers of Tennyson are pleased, of course, but we do not think the Holy Grail ia at all calculated to add to the number of his admirers. The "other poems" are the "Golden Supper," founded on Boccaccio's "Lucretius," and the "Northern Farmer," with several minor pieces. The "Farmer is excellent, not only in the imitation of the rough " Yorkshire burr " in the language, but in the coarse but shrewd sense with which, the " farmer " argues against setting love in the balance with " propaity." The book is printed in the usual excellent style of the celebrated Publishing House by which it is issued. Communicated. oniTiARr. Ma. JonN Wesley Jaque&s died March 221, 1S70, at 7 o'clock A. ax., in the COth year of his age. lie was a native ot Kentucky, and emigrated with hi father to this State when but a youth, aod settled in Posey County, near what is now known as Poseyville, where he resided until the day of his death. In the early part of his life he was strictly moral and upright, and beloved by all that knew him. In the year 1833 he and hi companion (a most excellent lady, who now survives her husband, and was united to him in marriage in 1824), united with the M. E. Church, where he remained a faithful Christian member until his death, filling, most of the time, an office in the Church, giving his influence and liberally of his means in support of the gospel. In his sickness, which was protracted, he was patient and forbearing, and talked of his departure as taking a journey to a far country, to meet with his children, parents, brotners, sisters, and relatives, who had passed on before him. His funeral was attended by a large concourse of people, and the services were conduoted by the llev. John Schrader, brother in law of the deceased, who is the oldest minister in the Methodist Indiana Conference. and has conducted all similar services for the family connection for the last fifty years. What a faithful servant of God this pioneer has been. He preached a very appropriate sermon from tho text Job, lith Chapter, 14th verse: "If a man die. shall be live again? AH tho days ot my appointed time will I wait till my change come." In the death of John Wesley Jaquess, the neighborhood has lost a faithful friend and leader in society, the Church a devoted and influential member, and the family a kind and affectionate husband and father. SInklcg Slowly. . j Diseases that progress rapidly to a crisis are not the only ones to be dreaded. Can- j ker or dry rot does not blast a tree as Enddenly as a stroke of lightnins. but unless ' arrested, it destioys it as certainly; and In like manner chronic debilltv, although it does not kill with the swiftness of yedow fever, Is as sure to sap the springs of life eventually as any acute disease, If not checked by invigorating medication. There ia sorcetbiui; Inexpressibly touching In the spectacle of premature decay. Languor, pallor, emaciation, depression of spirits, and a distaste for exertion, are Its ordinary symptoms, and they should be promptly met by tonic treatment. Tfie best invigorant and exhiiarant that can be administered in a case of this kind is Hodtetter's Stomach Bitters. The stimulating principle of the preparation rouses the dormant energies of the system, and the strengthealng and regulating properties give a permanent and hf-althinl impulse to the vital forces thus brought Into play. The falling appetite is re-awakened, the process of digestion and assimilation are quickened, the quality of the blood la Improved, tho secretions become more natnral, and every organ that contributes to the nourishment of the body undergoes salutary change. By these means therepair of the physical structure Is effected and its health and vigor restored. In no class of diseases nas the benlticent operation of the Bitters been more marked and striklag than In those characterized by general debility and nervous prostration. Ladies affected with these aliments find In tnis most wholesome of all tonics and correctives the safest and surest means of relief. It is strong to restore and powerless to lDjure. Such is the nnltorin teslU mony of " clouds of witnesses." Consumption. The Three Remedies. "ScHOCH'a Prji.vonic Stkuf," for the cure of Coughs, Colds, Bronchitis, and every form of Con. sumption. Fnrlfles the blood, and thus cures Consumption, when every other remedy tails. "Schecctt's Sea-Weed Tonic" for the cure of Dyspepsia or Indigestion, and ill diseases arising trom debility. This tonic Invigorates the digestive organs, supplies the place of the gastrie juice when that Is deficient, and then enables the patient to digest the most nutrlclous food; It la a sovereign remedy for all cases of Id digestion. M Schenck's Mandrake Pills," one of the most valuable medicines ever discovered, being a vegetable substitute for calomel, and having all the useful properties as crlbed to that mineral, without producing any of its Injurious effects. To these three medicines Dr. J. H Schenck, of Philadelphia, owes his un. rivaled success In the Treatment of Pulmonic Consumption. The Pulmonic Syrup ripens the morbid matter, discharges It, and purines the blood. The Mandrake Pills act upon the liver, remove a', obstructions therefrom, give the organ a healthy tone, and cure Liver Complaint, which la one of the most prominent causes of Consumption. The Sea-Weed Tonic InvlgoraU the powers of the stomach, and by strengthening the digestion and bringing It to a normal and healthy condition, Improves the quality of the blood, by which means the formation of ulcers or tubercles in the lungs becomes Impossible. The combined action of hese medicines, as thus explained, w I cure every case of Consumption, If the r tnedies are used In lime and the use of the Is persevered in sufficiently to bring the case to a favorable termination.
