Republican ilty lotentton. The Republicans of .tee Cily of Evansville, ted all who arc in favor of continuation of a prudent and economical administration of the affairs of the City, are requested to met t in mass convection at NATIONAL HALL, Corner of Vice and First Streets, on SATURDAY, MARCH 2G. 1870, AT 7 O'CLOCK, P. 31., for the purpose of nominating candidates for the various city offices to be filled at the election on Monday, April 4th, and transacting such other business as may be demanded by the interests of the party. By order of the Executive Committm. Norton and ConSIlnj. Thd Washington correspondent of the Cincinnati Commercial, reports a sharp passajr'j-at arocs between these two Senators. He says: A pretty sharp spat of words occurred io the Senate to-day between Sen ators Morton and Conkiinz in regard to the calling up of General Ames' case, upon which the Judiciary torn mitteo had reported adversely. Mr Morton called up the report, or made a motion to that enect, when Mr. Conk lin?, ia his nsaal palavering tone, smilad, and bowed, and poured oat his sickly irony, intimating that the Judiciary Committee would take care critseii. Morton, controlling his anger, replied very calmly that he had done nothior unparliamentary or uocourteous. and that he bad consulted Older and better Senators than Conkling before be took th step. Sher man and Hamlin, both old Senators, said Mr. Morton's course was very proper, and such as had been the cracticc. Other discussion followed. but Morton, of course, got the best of the auarrel. as he always does There h ti been for more than a year abad feeling existing between the two Senator, which is mostly due to the fact that Morton will not stand 'lnklicg s patronizing arroganoc. Considerably Mixed Literary Gems We like the lumioious manner in which tho Courier disausses city affairs. Its argument are so pertinent, showing tho efficiency of the Democracy and inef&oiency of the republicans! In an article in yes terday's issue, the citizsns of the city are enlightened as to their duty, and a comparison is attempted between the Republican and Democratic oandi dates tor coanoilmcn. W e nod in that article so many "literary gems," that we quote from it liberally in or der that our readers may share, witl us, the enjoyment of their perujal. The Courier starts out with a com parison between the two caodidates in the First Ward'. Can aoy man in Evansville say a word agaiust Aagust Ellcs? Let the voters of the ward contrast him with his opponent! Capt. Elies is known as a worthy citizen, who has aimed for many years to build up the city. Mr. Bedford is simply Mr. B! His mark in certain places is ma mark I The Courier is right in sayiog that Mr. Bedford has made his mark in certain places. Hi marJc is to be found all over the city, in the shape of good substantial buildings, sewerB and other improvements. He is known to be a live, icorking man, and the people of his ward will best consult their interests by electing him. Of the Second Ward candidates the Courier says: Mr. Alvah Johnson is a negative man. Mr. Van Riper is a positive man. The latter works for the success of coming generations. The former works for the enriohment of the heritage left by the men who have gone before him. Alvah Johnson a negative man! He has been honored by the Democracy with one of the best offices in Warrick County. He made a good race on the Republican ticket as a candidate for Congress. But these distinctions of course don't compare with Mr. Van Riper'a positiveness. .We think the Courier has got things mixed, and really meant the reverse of what it said. Oar reason for thinking so is found in the fact that Mr. Van Riper ran last year for Councilman ia a Ward that was positively Democratic, and got negatived. We think he is still negative. The Courier1 comparison of the Third Ward candidates winds up with a climax that is perfectly stunning. It says: The Third Ward. Who dares to raise his voice against Dr. Matthew Muhlhauseu? He is one of the boys of the town! Raised here. He has been a Councilman, and a good one! Who can say aught against him? We shall have mc-e to say when the opposition ehoSght! Compare Sam. Archer and Dr. Muhihausen! Oh, Lord! The ' Oh, Lord 1" conclusion of the paragraph is, to ssy the least, a very doubtfalcompliment to the Democratic-candidate. It says, in two words, that the writer in examining the eutjeot, found that comparisons were odious, and concluded to dismiss the theme io a way that would occasion his candidate the least damage. On the Fourth Ward candidates, the Courier does not commit itself. Here, again, it finds comparisons odious. By the time the editor got to the " ;fth and Sixth Wards, he had s considerably mixed. We copy arks on these two Wards enas .Mr. Squeers would say, hness:" i Ward! John Dannettell, . Willard Carpenter, conMr. Dannettell keeps a it anda groceiy. He ceils nd lea, nails and twine, cod- . herring, coal oil and tar, and very pleasantly to men who lager beer at his counter! He
is a very nice man a thorough geutleman, who wanted to whip us oa one occasion, but very kiodly consented not to do it! Hence, we feel kindiy towards Mr. Danoettell! How doyoudo.Mr. Daonettell! we bow before you, but would vote for Mr. Carpenter, if we lived in his Ward! Willard Carpenter ia a citizen of
thirty years' residence in Evansville. He came bere when our city was a village. He is a man of progress; a citizen of determination; a man of large means, whether the contrary be said or not, and has always been hrst and foremost in all public improve ments. He looks to the success of the city, and steadlastly opposes all erases. ihe honest voters Know very well whether he will be for thein j. or against them in tho race tor progress, success, edory, and a good city government. JJanoeitjil and Uarpen ter! (Jhoose between them. Charles Scbaum! Ho was nomina ted in the Fifth Ward. He i3 a pleasant fellow a nice maD. lie Bells malt, votes the Radical ticket, and is a brother-in-law of George Wolflin! If these things do not con- ' stitute a BUDCient recommendation, we do not know what would! "We shall tip our glass with Charley when we meet him, and wish him success in the malt business! John A. Reitz is the competitor cf Mr. Schauni. If there is a man in Evansville who has done more for the city than Mr. Reitz, we da not know it. He came to Evat.sv.l e a poor man, and has mae a fortune by attention to business, and being a lair and square man in all his deal ings with the people. He remembers the poor, because he was him self poor. He befriends the laboring men because be has himself labored He builds up the city because ho has an interest io its success. He is an honest man because ho is himself honest. He labors for the people be cause he is one of the people. He aids io the construction of publio works because such works are needed to develops the ciiy and the resources of the country ; he is charitable because he has the ability to exercise charily; he is honest because it is right tor all men to be honest 1 Choose, voters, choose between John A. Reitz and Charley Schaum. Let us all go to Charley Schaum'a; smell of his malt; take a glass cf )a?er. if bo in vites ns "oHf," and then VOTE FOR JOHN A. REITZ! The Courier sneers at the occupation of Messrs. Dannettell and Schaum. One makes, and the other sells, beer. This, we take it, sounds strangely when contrasted with the utterances of that paper for the past three months. We believe Messrs Scbaum and Jaonettell hivo never been accused of trying to dodge paying their honest debts. We regard Mr. John A. Raitz, and Mr. Willard Carpenter as strong men They look after their own interests strongly, and they have made money by the operation. Tbey are both publio spirited men. We mean by that, they feel a great interest in pub lic affairs, and so far, we honor them for it. Mr. Reitz believes too, in economizing publio expenditures, especially in thoso portions of the city in which he bas no particular property interest. He is also in favor of getting as much work as possible for the smallest outlay of money. This he proved, by his influence, when a member of a previous Council, in having the wages of laboring men reduced. We presumo it is for the latter services that the Courier is fo enthusiastic in his praise. But we protest against the Courier running four candidates in the Fifth Ward. We can not belitve that Messrs. Reitz and Carpenter will run well cn the same ticket. They entertain too high an opinion of each other's Fagacity and integrity for that. On the other Land, the Republicans, 60 far as Mr. Schaum is concerned, have made different arrangements. They propose to have him represent the Sixth Ward in the next Council. They think Dannettell wiil represent the Fifth to the entire satisfaction of its voters, without any assistance. The Courier's dissertation oa the Seventh Ward is neutralized by the fact that Mr. Rice, and not Capt. Kcehler is the Republican candidate. The Eighth and Ninth Wards are disposed of with a flourish of the pen. The Courier fails to enlarge upon the contest between the candidates in the Eighth Ward, especially. In this wc commend its prudence. But of course eo long and exhaustive an editorial could not be closed with other than a formidable climax, so we have it in the following paragraph Let the street railroad monopoly perish. Let tho gss monopoly pine away silently to a certain death. Let the new water works monopoly be nipped in the bud. Let all the clans and combinations perish and be bur ied in a dishonored grave. And it is with such bombast and fustian the Couriir hopes to influence intelligent voters ! We feel confident, however, that like tLe speech of the Paducah gentleman on Tuesday night, it will sour on the stomachs of those who read the stuff, and create disgust where it is expected to make the moat powerful impression. 5E1T PUBLICATION. THE PICTORIAL FIELD EOOK O? THE KfcVOLUTIoN or Ulasirattons by Fen and Pencil, of the History, Biog aphv, Scenery, Kel s aud Trdilions of the War for Independence: By Be. J. Lossiso. Published in two volumes, by Harfkr Bros,, Sew YorK. For sale by Kobekt Clakke & Co. Cincinnati Mr. Lossinq not only writes excellent history, but he collects the materials from which that history is made. Mr. Lossing's industry is equaled only by his conscientiousness, which leads him to treat all parties with tho utmost impartiality, and to give all the facta that" throw light upon "the contest, which is a novelty in writing about it. f We have had enough partisan history. It is proper that the history of such a contest should be given in a sound manner, and such is the book Mr. Lossino has placed before his countrymen, after immenso exertion, to make it worthy of their approbation. Of the mechanical part of the work, we cannot speak too highly. It is an ornament to any library, and is interesting to both young and old. Lippiscott's Maoazlne, for April (Philadelphia, J. P.
