The coquettishness of the weather that treated us to a taste of Spring and Summer within the same day a short time back, sud denly changed its tone early yesterday morning, and to a midnight rain a morning snow succeeded. During yesterday it grew rapidly colder, and last night, at midnight, the weather was pronounced the coldest for a year, with a stna'1 gale to make it more emphatic.

Origin of the Jewish Festival Cele brated to-day. The feast of Purim, or Lots, was instituted by Esther andMordeeai, to commemorate the deliverance of the Jews from the massacre which LTaman had, by lot, determined against them. It was celebrated on the 13th day of the month of Adar, and is preceded by a fast of twenty-four hour3; emblematic of the fast of Esther. The fast ended, they assemble in their synagogues and appropriate services are held, among others the read ing of the entire book of Esther, after which they celebrate their deliv erance by rejoicings and mirth. In olden times they were accustomed to hang an effigy of Hainan, and so gen eral is the feast-celebrated, that it is the custom for the more fortunate to send presents to their poor brethren, that they, too, may rejoice. In this city the feast i3 celebrated by a ball. at National Hall, thi3 evening. Terrible Fright. On Monday eight, as soma gentlemen were on their way home, about half past ten, they were startled by a Bhriek from a man on the corner of Walnut and Third Streets, of police! police!! There appeared to bo four men close together, and near Dr. Magens is' gate, when one of the five called out in great fright, and rushed across to the eneine house, screaming as he went, police! police!! Three of the gentlemen who heard the cry. ran in the direction taken by the fugitive, and came rushing into the houso to inquire what was the matter. The frightened individual, finding no policeman at the headquarters, and hearing the footsteps of the approach ing sympathizers, imagined himself pursued, and wildly rushed up the stairs into the Council Chamber The three gentlemen, still anxious to learn if they could offr any assist ance, followed up the stairs and lighted the gas in tbo deserted ' chamber when, to their intenso amusement the affrighted person crawled out from under the table beside the Re cordcr's desk, holding in his hand a stumpy bladad knife, with which he exnected to have to defend his life Imagine the chagrin of the fugitive when ho beheld, instead of a trio o garrotcrs, three old citizens, ono o whom is tho incumbent of a respon sible city oJice. His storv is. that two men laid violent hands on him for not answer ing their demand to be directed to a place which he, as the head of a fam ily and a respectable citizen, wa npnessarilv iznorant of. and that breaking from their era3p. he ran with the above result. Speeches were made by Messrs Wyttenbach, Phy. Veitz, Koehler and others, and a general good time was experienced. Fire on Second Street. About a quarter after seven o'clock, last night, a fire broke out in the old bar racoon, oa the corner of Sycamore and Second Streets, and although the alarm was promptly sounded, the fire had made such headway in the old dry timbers, that by the time the fire department arrived, the wreck was beyond saving. The engines put tho fire out and saved it from spreading, but tho old row is destrojed. It belonged to different owners, and so far as learned. wa3 not insured. It has been occu pied for some time by . several negro familes, but they had moved out, and it was unoccupied at the timo of the fire. Some furniture tbat Lai been moved into it by parties intending to occupy it, was removed. Enterprising.
