from Loudoa Society for February. r itio Coijrss of True Lotc Ileally Did Run Smooth. continued. finished my dinner, without havany precise notioa of wliat I might atin. The dart was in my side, ; I coull only wriggle and writhe er a sweet, sudden anguish, hey were talking one could not overhearing what these people . about going oa to the Trosaoha. good peopla were a little confusn their geography. I briefly told a what was their best way from the 2 1 where they were. 1 was, someer Other, rather agitated, and I 1 eve ray voico was both low and in.inct. I had a dry reply from ths !.ither,?and no raotiee at all from the y, -.ag lad', and for a few minutes I rcpscd into an internal rage. . iddenly the sapphire eves, in their Till splendor, were turned upoa me. Oh. those eyes I 'Tv- o of the fairest stare, in all the heaven, in some business, t'o entreat her yen j twinkle la their place till they return." Ir. I then some clear, courteous words - 3 addressed to me on the one sub-v-on which I could speak rather .y ', the mountains. But 1 instinct:7 felt that I wa3 talking in a very ;!id and inexpressive way, that did ustice to my consiedrable natural . ity. Lawford, however, was able . t ilk volubly and loudly, that wa3 i -ainly an advantage from his baing i. if bored permanently to a Sophia, .i d he somehow contrived to givo the M.a that he bad performed prodigies ! valor on the Scottish hills. The '.fi .tch! and I had been obliged to act rnide throughout, and wait for him i ak a dozen times, and lend him an : r a-, and replenish his flask, and pick hhu out of the river; I denounced bv in my heart as an impostor, and ! it very much inclined to rise up and c ounce him publicly. Still I had a i chat with Incognita in the inals permitted by hia declamatory 7ersation with the old people. She 1 all my favorite tastes. She loved . , ais, she read London Society, she k )v Tennyson by heart, she was very ' . of tho Oper.a but she had only 1- i there twice, she wa3 passionately a'r.uhedto cathredaU and cathedral ):. -v ic, very fond of llottcn Kow, but !i . i only been three times. And then full truth came out. She had onjft school at the beginning of that 'summer. Her father and mother, a whom she had been separated many years, had only returned i India two months before she had school to live with them, and to be r.c ir !',! py forever afterwards. Of course would have masters still for ItaU music, end her water colors. It so delhtful to go about with papa mamma. They had a few weeks London after she had left her o-l at Brighton, and since then tad been traveling about. They finished with the English Ikes, were now goin ; through the Scotch es. I thought the coincidence remarkable but in reality it was tnonplace enough that precisely my own line of tour. It was the -iant happy talk of the free, libera-hool-eirI budding into the wo- ; and the bright Incognita's real e was Clara, which exactly suited treshncsa and her beauty, ill I owned that the beer and cayj pepper was a miserable draw- :. Bat it was destined that even ;his respect my dissatisfaction ld rccievo considerable alievia- . Tor it really appeared that this io girl had been that very day to summit of Ben Lomond, owned to mvself that Bhe was 3 entitled to her chop and her ; of beer, and even, if she so wisho such fiery condiment as cayenne cr. Still, even on this point afa long and anxious discussion, ford greatly relieved my mind; e asserted in most unequivocal ,j, that he had heard the mother isoUing beer and cayenne pepper ie young lady, who wa3 simply reiQg the mother's words to the serwho was attending her. Certainmost disproportioned amount of uietude was excited in my mind be bitter beer and the red pepper, n the course of tho two or three r.4 passed in tho coffee-room, I had rtained that Clara Benyon aud parents were going on by steamer 'arbert, and thence to Loch Long, own lino of travel had been differto eet to Inversnaid and go on . , ir . A 1 !oach to Jjocn xvairme. Accuruy, when Lawford and I were od tozcther in that hidoou3, ble-bcdded carret, I had to indoee Lawford that it was expedient us to abandon all our well arrang Dlansofthe Trosachs, tho Lakes, '. Blair Athol, and go direct west, an, which after due consideration, . bad abandoned. I did not wish to discourteous to Lawford, and ve to render his disposition amen- ; to argument. Eventually, howr, after clenching my arguments by . ion that I at least intended to a Loch Lomond, he branded mo as aa not knowing his own mind, and it to sleep in a state ol sulky acqui ' strolled on the lawn, watching the pt nn,l idlff flins-iner nebbles on the ' " - j a a uio waves. Somehow or other, 1 -. very happy. I seemed to bo livr a fresher, fuller life. There was rt of kindness to ma in the air, sunlight and the water; and when iw Clara in her morning dress comout upon the lawn, somehow there mod to be no strangeness in it. I ost expected that we should be .ing each other by our Chrisian ies. There seemed to be a familty and old-worldness about oar porn; that this was a fateful hour, which I had always lived, and tods the bringing about of which all i of events had concurred. Tie steamer goes at a quarter past ," I observedTtakicg out my watch i; now a quarter pa3t nine, i.', we are cot goiDg by the steamer Ii ivc changed our minds." 1 t going by tho steamer!" ir icnJship. Lawford certainly did use strong language. He cut up exceedingly rough. He said I wis using him as a mere thing and a chattelwithout ary respect for his own feelirg3, and for vile uses of my own. The purblind Lawford, after all his experience with his Sophy, not to see, as I myself was beginning to see dimly, howl the land really lay. He said ho had ascertained that there was only a single outside place left, and he bargained that if we did not dissolve partnership.that outside seat should be reserved for him. I did not know in what way tiie Benyons were traveling, so I assented, not without a dark misgiving. To my infinite chagrin the Benyons were going outside, and cn that, brilliant morniDg I was to bo immured in the body of the coach. I saw that wretch Lawford climb the bos, and adjust Miss Benyon'a wraps and make her comfortable, with a skill doubtless derived from his intimacy with that Sophy. With many groans I sub sided into my place, having lor my vis a vis a buxom countrywoman, a personal friend of the coachman s, whom he was accommodating with a lift. I felt dreadfully disappointed. I now acknowledged to myself that I had fallen regularly in love with. Clara, and it really seemed for the moment that tho course of my love was running smooth. I was musing in lonely revery, on the borders of slumber, when suddenly the coach stopped. I now perceived that the sky was overcast, and that rain was falling heaviliy. "Sorry to trouble you sir," said the guard, "but two ladies are coming inside on account of the rain.,' It was Mrs. Benyon and Clara. "Sorry to trouble me, indeed !" I instantaneously determined to give the guard a handsome tip. "The soft, tender, indulgent, blessed rain." Scarce were they seated when ,the sun shone out again. I longed to tell him, like Lucifer, how I hated his beams. Clara cruel, relentless Clara said they bad better climb to the roof again. But her mamma blessings on her headl said it would be a pity to give so much trouble, and they were best as they were. So I had them to myself, and I think we were a brillant little party. Being in the same carriage, wo desired to be mutually agreeable, and nothing occmred to interrupt the harmony of the drive. The mother was a beautiful old lady. Iwas almost as much in lovo with her a3 I was with her daughter. It was a happy drive. I was wrapt in Elysium. I heard divine music, I saw heavenly eyes and an angelic face. CONCLUDED ON MONDAY !
