ESyMr. McKean Buchanan, in his Epeeech on the stage at the Opera House last night, said that he had understood that nothing but legs would "take" in Evansville, and that if he had to leave here before the time he had appointed to fctay, whenever he returned he should fetch the legs with him, as he played for money. Mr. Buchanan did not probably calculate on two things that have a strong tendency to reduce the size of theatrical audiences just now in Evvansville, t. c, the powerful religious revival and the arrival of the season of Lent. The audience, though meagre, showed no lack of appreciating Mr. Buchanan's artistic merit, but it was evident that to those who did attend the performance, his acting gave entire patisfactioa.
SIISTESIOrS CASS OF roisoxixG. The LiTfs or a Whole Family Endangered.
Yesterday morning Mr. Edward Boetticber, of the firm of Boetticher, Ktllogg & Co., hardware, complained to his partner of feeling rather unwell, and in a few m;nute9 afterwards as Mr. Kellof g supposed, went out. In the course of about half an hour a messenger arrived in haste at thn Btore with a message for Mr. Boetticher, that 3irs. B. was violently ill, and asking that he come home with a physician at once. The messenger was instructed to go at once for a physician, and a second messenger was dispatched through town to find Mr. B., and tell him of the condition of his famiiy four children and a young man, a relative of the family, being alike affected. The messenger returned without finding Mr. Bcetticher, and shortly afterward an employee of the firm en gaged ia the second story, heard i groan, and going to where the groan proceeded from, found Mr. B. lying on a bed, vomiting violently, and evi dently very ill. Mr. Boetticher was assisted into hack and sent home and aid sent for, and in a short timo four physicians were in attendance doing all that could be done for them. The symptoms developed by all, indicate poison by arsenic. How such a thing could have occurred was a mystery. The only person in the household not affected was the servant girl, who is above any suspicion. Her cxemp tion is attributed to the circumstance of her not using milk in coffee cs the rest of the family did. and that the poison must have been in the milk. The statement in the Union, of last evening, that the "grandmother" had bought arsenic a few days ago, is contradicted by the family, with the remark that the old lady is absent from the city. At midnight, they were all pronounced to be out of danger, by Dr Kress. Mr. Boetticher, who was the most severely afflicted, being very much easier. During the afternoon various theories were advanced concerning the case but the facts related above are only such as were related by those ia a position to know best as to the circumstances. Mr. Boetticher is confidently expected to be about as usual in a day or two. Meanwhile, the case will undergo a thorough investigation by the family. THE KELIGIOUS IXIEIIKST. UNION MEETINGS. The meeting last evening, in Trinity Methodist Church, was well attended, by about the usual number of people. . Rev. Mr. Martin, of the Vine Street Church, preached the sermon with great ability and effect. About twenty persons rose for prayers, and in the ii.quiry meeting that followed, as deep an interest wss manifested as on any previous occa sion. The meeting was largely composed of yourg people, and was in most re spects, a counterpart of the meeting on Tuesday evening. The evening meetings are contin ued at thi3 Church during the week. McKean Buchanan. At the Opera IIouse.lastnight.Mr, Buchanan opened with Richelieu, to a very meagre audience, which was owing probably, to a great extent, to the fact that he arrived a day earlier than at first announced. It ia difficult to give a complete criticism of Mr. Buchanan s acting. In many parts it roso to actual sub limity, while in the main it seemed to. give ample satisfaction. With the stimulus" that a good, full house always gives, particularly if the house was warm, there is no doubt but Mr. Buchanan would elicit the heart iest applause; but with a house so miserably warmed, and in the absence of the enlivening feature of the orchestra, it would require better acting than Evansville ever saw to awaken much enthusiasm. Recorder's Court. The follow- -. - j .1, . ing minutes were eniereu m iuk records of this court yesterday. Charles Johnson, d. d., $6 25; Louis Goodsell, d. d., $5 25; Wm. Gordon, d. d., ?5 25; Piatt Bush, breaking windows, $3 25: . Jack Stone, fighting, $7 65; Julia nable, accused cf being disorderly, wa3 dismissed. Alarm of Fire. The alarm of fire, last evening, was oaused by the burning out of a chimney on Lcet street, epposhe Councilman Wiltshire's Cooper Shop. The engines were out promptly, and ran in the direction indicated, but learned, when within two or three squares, that all danger was past. Communicated. Dr. Tiffany. Editor Dally Journal With you, I take pleasure in saying," that tho citizen3 of Evansville, owe thanks to the ' Evansville Library Association," for securing Dr. Tiffany, of New Brunswick, New Jersey, to deliver two or three lectures, on the 9:h, 10th and 11th, inst. Dr. Tiffany has no superior, in oratory and elcquence, in this country. He thrillu and electrifies his audience. I have heard him whan he was surpassingly grand. His second lecture in the same place, is always attended with a greatly increased audience. I should regret, if any of our citizens, from the want of the knowledge of the wonderful,.pQir3 of.ttoL..man, shouli fail to hear him. Yours, ' James Hill. The is fully endorsed by the Jouun s
iNCOiiE Tax. The revenue of
ficers arc busily engaged in col lecting Statements of income for 1SG9, so as to assess internal revenue lax on such as are subject thereto. In all cases where the state ments are not returned by the 10th of this month, the law provides a penalty. Those persons who have not attended to thi3 matter, would do well to do so at once. Statements on the forms provided by the Government, ought to be returned in all cases, this is the only manner in which it can be officially known whether persons ought to be assessed or not. The officers have no authority to take it for granted that any particular person i3 not liable to the taxes. The proper way to show non-reliability is by making a statement in the regular form. In this connection, it will relieve the public to state that it is almost certaiD, that after this year, this tax will be less onerous. The prospect is that the tax will be continued, but the rate will be reduced, and the exemptions increased. EOCAIi NOTICES. 3fot.ee. All those having claims against the estate of C.
