Hon. D. W. Mann, of Cairo, seems to be regarded by the Republicans of that Congressional District as the mast available candidate for Congress, lie is eaid to be a good stump speaker.
President owRman, of Ashbury Universitr. oiSciated at tbe cedicato ry esrvices of the new Methodist chuch at Darlinztoa last Sunday morning. T. H. Express. That is a bad spell for Bowman.
The compositor, like the archer in
scripture, must have drawn hli how
at a venture. Tus editor of the Vinfnnes Sun does not take kindly to " the tew departure." In his paper, of Friday, be says: " The principles of. Democracy are opposed to black political equality, and black social amelioration. Democracy believes this to be a white man's Government, founded on a white man's written Constitvtion." The Sun ought not to conoentrate its rays so intensely on the Courier, of this city. They may result in combustion. The Fort Wayne Republicans are not satisfied with the result of the Indianapolis Convention, claiming that ia the matter of the Trcasurersbip, Colonel li. W. Oakley, their candidate, was "sold out." So lar as wc are concerned we deem it most probable that if the Colonel was " sold out" at all he did it himself. This we are not willinff to believe, however: Mr. Oakley made a gallant race, and as against any other man than ueneral Milroy, would undoubtedly have gathered around him the united support of the northern counties. There wa3 a magic, however, about the namo of the old hero or Mill borings wnicn could not be resisted. Layfayetle Journal. Gen. Milrov as "the o!d hero of Mill Springs," is good! The Journal ought not to damage the canvass of our candidate by such ridiculous blunder at the outsat. Gen. Milroy, with his 'commind. was ia Western Virginia when the battle of Mil Springs was fought, Henderson Items. Roller skat ing has been introduced, and met with a hearty reception. John C. Atkinson, ha 1 his cribs, containing from 1,000 to 1.4C0 bush els corn, destroyed by lire, recently Not more than 400 or 500 bushels were saved. The corn destroyed, composed Mr. A'.s entlro crop. Union revival meetings arc in pro irrosq in Henderson. jMueh good is anticipated as the result. The O.vensboro Shield, thinks Henderson excels Owensboro in the quantity and display of dry goods, groceries, hardware, confectioneries, and tobacco stemmeries, while Owensboro is ahead, in palatial residences, number of people, fim store rooncs, Court nous?, atd iron fence around the public square, pretty women, skating rink, and good whisky. Imli:izia lienis. . Bartholomew County is to have a new jail and Sheriff s residence. Gospoet shipped 100,000 pounds bulk meat to Louisville one day last week. Hog and hominy is still a staple in Louisville. The Cannelton Public Schools gave a public exhibition on Friday last, which the Reporter compliments highly. A Pehhy County Agricultural and Mechanical Society was organized at Rome on the 12th inst. Our country exchanges, as-vnsual, are grumbliDg over the wheat pr-vl pects. A certain Mr. Glick ate over thirty dinners in fi?o days at the late charitable fair at Lafayette, and got a fine silk hat as a reward for his enterprise and selfdenial. A GOOD deal of farming land is changing owners in Scott County, many persons from Kentucky purchasing farms, and settling in that county. Four railroad train-: each way pas3 over the Louisville and Jeffersonville Railroad bridge daily. Forty Democratic candidates for Sheriff arc reported in Jackson County. A correspondent of the New Har mony Register afflicts the readers of that paper with nearly two columns of denunciation cf religious revivals, and signs himself "Churchman." Had he been present at Jerusalem on the day of Pentcccst, his indignation would have known no bounds. According to the New Harmony Register, two months' labor was roquired to pack the Geological collection of the late David Dale Owen. It will take a caravan of over twenty wagon3 to transport it to this city. Samuel Bolton, Esq., a resident of New Harmony for forty-four years, died on Thursday last at the mature age of .74. The Newburghers laid in a supply of ice daring the recent cold snap. So did the Washingtonians. The vererable Peter Cartwright has -accepted an invitation to lecture in Washington on the 31 and 4th of May. Mr. William Killion died at his residence in Steel township, Daviess county, on the 21st inst. Mr. Killion was sixty-two years old, and had been a resident of that township for more than fifty years. The Madison Courier reports a private exhibition at "Our Lady of Angelo Academy," in that city, A meeting was held in Bladison on Saturday last, to deviso ways and means lor the -improvement of the County roads. - .
The Delphi Times says that work will be commenced on the Logansport'
Frankfort & Rossvilie railway by the 15th of March.
The Lafayette new jail and Sheriff's , Owen Owens, Richard Richards, Daresidence are already finished. The ! av,s. DS i, . , , . tin? quite common among them, former is neeaed badly. J They do not, like the Scandinavians, Mu. John Gregory, son of Hon B. colonize in neighborhoods, but are F. Gregory, of Warren County, has 1 scattered all over the city, in all trades
purchased the office of the VT warren i Republican, at Williamsport. The Brazil furnaces are negotiating for forty thousand tons of Lake Superior iron ere, to be shipped via Michigan City. Only fifty persons listened to a couple of free trade speeches in Terre Haute, on Friday night, last. About twenty-five applicant are already in the field for the position cf Examining Surgeon, at Indianapolis, for tho Pention Department, made vacant by the death of Dr. Ciippioger. The entire State revenue received from all sources during the last fiscal year amounted to four; million seven hundred and seventy-nine thousand nine hundred and twenty-three dollars and fifteen cents. The Mt. Vernon Democrat saya there are one "hundred and fifty colored voters in Posey county. We guess the number will swell to over two hundred by tho October elections. The President and Direotors of the Mt. Vernon & Grayville Railroad left Mt. Vernon on Sunday to attend a Railroad meeting at Olney. So the Democrat informs us. Owensboro Items. The following paragraphs are from the Moniior: Tobacco is arriving quite liberally in tnis market. cale3 were made last wees at trie ioiiowicg rates: Choice leaf at 10, lues 7 to 9, and 2 cents for trash. Good second quality ; leaf 7 to 9 cts., lugs 3 to 6 cts. Inferior and frosted, 4 to 6 cts. for leaf: 2 to 4 cents lor lugs, and 1 cent for trash. The interesting revival that has been in progress at the Methodist Church in this city for some weeks, closed on sabbath night last; hity-hve accessions have been made to the Church. At the Cumberland Presbyterian, two additions were made on babbata morning; and to the mem bership of the Old School Presbyte rian Church worshipping at the Cour House, 6even were added. The following items of shipments of Daviess county products, during the year ISC'', irom the whan boat of Murphy, Elder & Triplett of this city was kindly furnished us by Mr. Louis Keller. ihis statement does not m elude the heavy shipment of tobacco Sec, made directly from eooao of our stemmeries and which were fully as great, probably, as those maae by Mur nhy. .fc.ld.er & Co. There was shipped from the wharf boat 3,218 hides, 2,403 hogs, 1,501 barrels ot whisky, 511 head of sheep, 457 cattle, C7 mules, 22 hordes and 2,578 hhds ot tobacco. In the production of tobacco, Da viess County heads the list in Ken tucky, having returned last year 6 298.850 pounds; in hemp Fayette, 2,1S2.100 pounds; in corn Shelby, 1,358 800 bushels; ia wheat, Logan, 168,526 bushels. Average value of land per acre in the entire State, $10 30. In 1869 the State dog tax netted $2,109 55. In that year dogs killed 21,010 sheep, valued at $59,312. CHICAGO LETTER. Practical Werlilngs of tho Keforiacrs tlilncse and Japs Welsh and other Nationalities Ijdln Thompson's Tr Gables, Lc Chicago, Feb. 22, 1870. Special Correspondence Journal. " If the citizens will let the polico attend to tho thieves, and not interfere with them, the villains will not trouble them much longer. Nearly every "Chicago Professional" is either in the penitantiary, the county jiil or tho Bridewell." The abovo is an extract fiom the Tribune, and in the next issue, or one later, is an account of tho garroting of Chester Kinney, a lawyer, formerly of Middleporr, 111. " A man garroted on La Salle Street." " Johnny Dowd and Ed. Burns again loose," and only a few days before a poor man from Indainapolis was nearly killed in the western suburbs. A house set on fire in open daylight by roughs. Last Sunday's issue has: "A lady outrageously assaulted by a negro," and nearly every paper has some theft or other crime, great or small, chronicled. This 13 of course not to be wondered at, in a city of over three hundred thousand peoplo, but the point is that the Tribune ought to know better, that to make such a silly assertion that the " profession are nearly all locked up. In my last, when treating of our composite or cosmopolitan character, I neglected to state that among other foreigners we have, one Chinaman and two Japs. The chinaman is named Chau Hong, and is a clerk with tbe great Tea and Auction House of Battuss & Co., who brought tho first importation of 175,000 lbs of teas over the Pacific. R. R. The Japs keep a retail tea and Japanese goods store on Clark Street, and live by themselves. Chan however "goes in" considerably on general assemblies-. He figured at a series of dinners for the benefit of some church last fall. Having received an invitation to be present, he cama and learning the object he said: "Yes? Mo can do, makee tea like chinamen makee. Yes?" This meant, can I help by making tea china fashion? His services were joyfully accepted and ho added greatly to the attractions and consequently to the receipts of the entertainments. On another occasion he attended a dinner at the Protestant orphan asylum, and being made to understand the object said: "Oh! me belly sdII? fo poo little chillens got no l'aller, no molle. Pleasee takce, Chan givee ten dolla. buy someting, makeo chillen3 glad." And he shelled out ten dollars accordingly. . . Chan is a good looking young man of twenty-four, lighs copper color, about 5 feet 7, dresses sometimes, in dark blue cloth flowing cloak and pants, with a dark skull cap. At other times, ho wears gay colored garments, not the least remarkable of which, is a large vest, elaborately embroidered, which he wears over everything else. The usual pig-tail of cour?e. The Japs dress like other people wear their hair short, and one of them wear3 a full beard. My last, was principally about the Scandinavians and B:heiiaiis. Herein I shall speak of the Welsh.
The generally pa3 for English,
and like the beandiaavians, have ; their peculiar names, as Llewellen, . Lloyd, Powell, Pritchard, Griffiths, ! Matthews, Hughes, etc. Evan Evans, &u - a vvuuawvuD Then nor o s.Yirii nf own, and a minister who preaches in their own language, which 13 akin to the Gaelic, and claimed by them, to be the original British tongue. The Welsh formerly prefixed Ap to their names, as Ap liichard. An Howell. &c, as the Irish prefix O , the Scotch Mac. &c. but this is now generally contracted and attached to the name, becoming rritcnard, rowell, &e. In England the Welsh, are gen erally credited witli being quick tem pered, quarrelsome, ana intemperate, but if such is their character there, they show wonderful capacity for reform on this side of the Atlantic, as their history in this "city and in iiacine, lvenosna, ana jrortage uounur- - i j .i p ties, Wisconsin, uuuuustuwy icsuuea. They are generally members or some church, and industrious, thrifty citi zens. There are. also, in this city a dozen or so families of Manx people, natives of the Isle cf Man. who. although British, ore like the Canadians, neither English, Irish, Scotch, or Welsh, but unlike Canadians, their ronntrv is cot a subordinate Vominion, but a kingdom, aa you win sea by reading the various titles of the British tovereigns. Their national coat ot arms is three booted and spurred legs, joined above the knee, and arranged in a circle, so as to look as u racing, one over the other, like tbe spokes of a wheel. Another point in which thev resemble native Canadians is that their language JKiOgltsh is such as to lead one to think them either Jiioglish, Irish or Scotch, but leave him, at the same time, unable to decide They are generally stout, hearty people, most of them beins shin carpea ters or shiD smiths. Before I close my correspondence with you, I shall take occasion to speak of another class of foreigners of whom wo have considerable numbers in the State, but none, so far as I know, here in the city, viz: the Portagues of whom there are large numbers in Sangamon and Morgan Counties. The newspapers seems to have ta ken a sudden turn here lately in amusement matters, lho iimc ana Tribune are both criticising Lydia ia Thompson s troupe severely. Per egrine Pickel pricks his pen into tho peculiar perlormances ot that peripa tetio playing party with a pungency that punctures painfully while Polinto points his pencil piquantly, and puts prominently in print a pretty pharaphrase of Lydia's penmanship which places tho fair Lydia in a ridiculous light before the public Of coursa Lydia retorts by speeches before the foot lights and by letters and hand bills, but she knows she has the hardest of it, for her hand bills and speeches reach only a "look and a yell" aa the "po' " white folks in the South Bay, while the papers reach far and near. "Mr." Lydia Thompson, whoever he is, keeps in the background, firing his pillets frcm Miss Lydia's fuse, making her stand all the fire in return. This habit of married women who follow the 6tago for a profession to go before the public as Miss Tweed'edee, when in fact they arc either Mrs. Tweedledum, or ought to be, help3 to bring tho profession into disgrace, and but caters to a depraved taste. Holding out as a maiden, a woman who is the mother of several children, as is often done, leaves the woman the alternative of acknowledging herself as either disreputable or sailing under false colors; which, as it is generally resorted to to hide some disgrace, leave? a suspicion on her character. But it is broadly hinted teat few of the "shape artists" have any to suspect. The qucstoo now arises. Why is the Lydia Thompson troupa less meritorious now than it was thiee months ago when the papers puffed them? Perhaps your equivocal puff, that so incensed Dan. Shelby, has had an effect on them. Who knows? Yours, Deabbokn. COBirjIIS3IOIT CARDS. THOS. C.
