The Pittsburgh Commercial had one the other day. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Tiie Warrick County Convention, which met at Boonville on the 5th inst., instructed for Hon. R. T. Kerciieval for Treasurer of State, andl Judge Asa Iolehart for the Supreme Court. Senator Morton has repeatedly favored us with public documents, for which we thank him. A bound copy of the Congnssional Globe, Third Session Fortieth Congress, was particularly acceptable. Last Sunday evening, during tbe Services at the Centenary church, New Albany, a young lady fainted and fell from her seat to the floor. She was immediately taken out into the fresh air and revived. The cause of the fainting was improper ventilation of the house. The Yincennos Sun says the Com missioners appointed by Gov. Baker to re-locate the county scat of Mar tin County at West Shoals, directed that the people of that town should pay to the county the sum of $2,500, the value of tho county buildings, which 6ura is to be expended toward payment for the new buildings to be erected at West Shoals. With only $15,030 ii city orders outstanding, the authorities of Cairo have so managed things as to make them worth only sixty-five cents on the dollar. Cairo is Democratic, and the Democrats don't talk of reform tickets, either. 13 that the kind of financiering the Courier desires to introduce into our city, under tho name of reform? Alt. doubt is removed of the fate of Mexico. Tho unfortunate country is doomed to another bloody civil war, and even the friends of Juarez admit that tho catastrophe cannot be averted. Five States are now in open insurrection, and the Central Government is powerless. Very gloomy forebodings of the future fill the columns of the Vera Cruz papers. The next steamer at Havana will probably bring the news of tho downfall of President Juarez and tho reign of anarchy all over the land. In exchanging Maximilian for Juarez the Mexicans got back their Republic, but not peace or good government. The Republican County Conventions being held in various parts of the State, are well attended and tho proceedings generally harmonious. We are gratified to observe that they are generally outspoken oa the subject of retrenchment and economy. It will be well for the Republican Representatives in Congress to heed these significant intimations of public opinion. If there is any ona point on which tho masses of tha party are resolved, it is that strict economy Bhall be inaugurated by their Representatives in Congress, in voting appropriations. It will not be politically healthy for any of these Representatives to disregard their wishes in this particular. At the Convention in Tippecanoe County, a resolution was adopted inviting the male colored citizens of that county to participate in the action of the Convention upon equal terms with the white members. This is the first movement recognizing the ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment as a political fact. The New Albany Ledger urges Democrats to commence at once the work of enlisting the colored voter into tho ranks of the Democratic party, and teaching him that his only hope of continued freedom is in an unfaltering adherence to its principles. The Courier of this city, if we rightly comprehend the editorial in its issue of yesterday, under the heading, "Our Platform," boldly advocates absolute and perfect equality of all men, morally, socially and religiously, as well as politically, as the only just and right interpretation of the spirit of tho Fifteenth Amendment. It insists not only upon equality u before s the law," but "equality at the fireside, in the Church, and in tho administration of the Government." Social equality, or mingling at the fireside, does not ex'et among whito people and never will. But the Courier, with the zeal of a new convert, goes beyond all the recognized laws governirg society, and insists that social equality at tho fireside must at once be accorded the colored people. Or, in other words, that the colored people, by the Fifteenth Amendment, are elevated above a large portion of the whito race, and are to enjoy privileges hitherto denied a large majority of them. Of course, all thi3 is nonsense, and ilisgustiog to a large majority of the people, both white and black. There is not an intelligent colored man in thij community who will not turn up his noso in contempt at such exhibitions of demagoguisra for the purpose of obtaining his vote. Another thing is very amusing to us. Before the ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment by the Republican party, the Democratic papers in all parts of t!,o country insisted that tbe negroes were ) ignorant to vote
intelligently on any subject. That
1 giving them the right of suursge was degrading the right and making it ridiculous. Now, however, that the Amendment has been ratified. these eame papers insist that the natural place for this igno rant and degraded people 13 in the Democratic party. So argues the New Albany Ledger; so teaches the Courier. We shall not be surprised, during the approaching campaign, to eec the same lengthy Democratic processions that characterized the campaigns of the past the same wagons of beautiful girls, represent ing tho glorious States of the Union, with Goddess of Liberty accompani ment the same old mottoes, but changed to suit the new phase the party is assuming. Instead of "Fathers, save us from negro equal ity 1" which graced the wagon3 of 18C8, we will now read, "Father.?, give us negro equality! U or "White husbands or none!" we may expect the startling announcement, " Black husbands or none!" and so on through .the entire list. The old banners and flags will answer excel lently well, with only a verbal change cr two. What the Democracy want, according to the Courier, iarirot only " equality before the law " tut " equality at the fireside " .We suspect that a large majority of the readers of the Courier will not be able (0 keep up with it in the rapidity with which it turns political corners, and that many of them who have for years opposed negro suffrage consistently and conscientiously will not be prepared to accept its "equality at the fireside" doctrine. However, we shall watch its endeavors to cr.m this new doctrine down their unwill inz throats with gratification. We know nothing that will be more com ical than to see a string of Irishmen marching to the polls under Demo cratic banners with the new mottoes. It will be an exhibition of retribu tive justice and self-abasement com bined that can hardly fail to produce most beneficial results. Large. Among the railroad jobs now seek ing Congressional sanction appears a bill incorporating ' the Missouri, Kansas and Railway Company, which seems to confer power enough to eatisiy any ordinary mortal. His Majesty Vanderbilt not excepted. We more to amend the title, and to call it An act to make the Hon. Sidney Clarke, and some other good fellows, owners in fee simple of the States of Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, Texas, and of the Indian Terri tory, and cf- everything elso they may want. R8ad twice, relerred, and or dered printed. There let it sleep. Missouri Democrat. Republican Congressmen will con suit their popularity and influence by steering clear of these Indian Treaty and Railroad jobs. If they go into them at all they had better iisurea nice thing with the expectation of retiring to private life at the close of their present terms of office. Their constituents will not desire their services any longer. Since the gentleman from Africa has been raised politically to the level of tho editor of the Plain Dealer, by that great improvement made in the constitution by the adoption of the Fifteenth Amendment, we invited the latter gentleman to extend to the former the right hand of'fsllosvship, and let the past be the past. So far, he ha3 only answered by an indignant silence. Cleve7and Leader. He is more surly than the genial editor of the Courier. The latter announces as "our platform," not only fall equality to the colored men before the law, but "equality at the fireside." Of course he extends the right hand of fellowship if the colored gentleman will vote the Democratic ticket, otherwise well otherwise. For the Evansviile Journal. Republican Convention. Proceedings or the Spencer County Republican Convention, Held in . Kockport, February 5tb, 1SIO List of Delegates Resolutions, Ac In pursuance to a call of the Chairman of the Republican Executive Committee of Spenecr County, this convocation assembled and was organized by calling L. S. Gilkey, Esq , to the Chair, and Milo E. Lawrence to the Secretary's table. During tho deliberations of the Convention the following resolutions were drafted and unanimously adopted: Resolved, That we endorse the administration of President Grant in the administration of our national affairs, and, also, the administration of our State affairs by Governor Baker. Resolved, That in the rapid reduction of our national and State debts by the honest application of tho money raised for those purposes by our national and Stato taxes, meets our hearty commendation. Resolved, That we still continue to insist upon the most rigid economy in tho administration oi our public affairs, whether National, State or Municipal; and we hereby tender our sincere thanks to the Hon. Henry L. Dawes, for his manly and straightforward speech on that subject. Resolved, That we will oppose the election of any man to any office within the gift of the people of the State, who is not opposed to the allowance of the so called Wabash canal claim, believing as we do, that the proposition to allow said claim is an attempt to rob the tax payers of the State of sixteen million dollars; and believing furthermore that said claim has been once equitably and fairly paid by tho State according to the terms as proposed by the claimants themselves. Resolved, That the failure and refusal of the State Democratic Convention of January 8th, 1S70, to express the sentiments of the Democratic party on this question, justifies all tax-payers in believing that said party is in some way or other, committed to this iniquitous attempt to swindio the State of Indiana out of millions of dollars. Resolved, That the Hon. Robert T. Kerchcval is tho choice of this county for tha offico of Treasurer of State, and cur delegates to the State Convention are hereby instructed to ca3t the vote of Spencer County for him, and u-ia all honorable means to secure his nomination. Resolved, That any Republican of Spencer County who may bo in In- j dianapolis during tho session of the
Republican State Convention is hereby authorized to act as a delegate from Spencer County in said Convention. Resolved, That the proceedings of this Convention bo published in the

Certainly there must be something radically wrong with a city government that permits such wholesale crime as is reported from that otherwise prosperous city. These continued depre dations and lawless acts will only have the effect of keeping purchasers and consumers from trading in a city where life is held at so cheap a rate. for a city without order and safely cf person. 01 all places in the world, is the most to be dreaded. Cleveland Leader. It all happened in this wise: The Republicans were in a majority in Chicago. The Democracy persuaded some eo called Republicans into sup porting a so-called Reform Ticket. The Reform Ticket was successful, and the city is now gathering the lruits. ine Courier wants to run a Reform Ticket in this city, but we suspect the results of such movements in other places are not flatter ing enough to induce any-of our Re publicans to invest in it to. an extent that will repay the Democracy for their time and labor in getting it up Each night our littlo city is lighted with gas. It blazes in the shop win dows blue lights and red lights and in the houses and on the streets it sheds a cheerful glow, giving to our place the appearance a3 on former gala nights when illuminations were made. Water works and gas works accomplished, a magnificent city hal and numerous and elegant churches already built, let our citizens give their attention to a public school and a new hotel, which are the only facil ities wanted to enable them to fully enjoy all the graces and amunities of life.
