' " , The Ovreu Coun'y Journal s-nys the Indianapolis & Vinceriiies Road is now doing a heavy business in the vray of transporting stock and lumber, j near y every train taking out Eevcral car-loads of either. Rev. Geo. Mokuison, Sunday, resigned the pastorate of the First Presbyterian Church at Terre Haute, Indiana. The Express thicks the rcs'gnation will cot be accepted. We notice, however, that ministerial resignatioos, a? a ceneral thing, are accepted. - Ida, daughter of Horace Greeleyinherits noco of the old man's contempt for ce clothes. , Oa the contrary, she is described as a " regular stuuner," whoso millinery bills make Horace's sleepy eyes open and with a snap. ' Horace educated her in Europe, and must put up with her French ways. - The Indianapolis Mirror reports the demise of the celebrated Water Drifr anrl nlaims? credit for his taking off. He, was laid out in the City Council on Monday night. . . . The little Water Puppy disposed of, we hops the .Mirror will join us in sending the hig Water Dog of the Wabash and Erie Canal after him to keep him company. A Vienna dispatch says that advices have been received there stating that the Dalmatian rebels have laid down their arms and surrendered. If this is true then the last war cloud in the sky of Europe has rolled away, and the world is at peace. There are rumors of war between Turkey and Egypt, tut' the -Dalmatian rebellion was the only actual war in Christen tlom. The ultra nioatane papers in FraDce have recently published seventy-one distinct slanders against Father II Y A ointhe, in order to account for what they call his defection from the Church. It is said in Paris that the Father intends to bring actions for defamation against all of these jour nals. The most widely circulated of these libels is that he has for some time past been cn terms of great inti macy with a celebrated actress, and intends to marry her. Silver in Habdin County, III. -The Cairo Bulletin has seen specimens of silver ore, taken from the Hose Claire Mines, in Hardin County, about one hundred and fifty miles below this city. The ore is represented to be as rich as the ore taken from the famous Comstock Mines, in Nevada, and is said to assay trie precious metal at the rate of 3,500 per ton. Messrs. Colby & Co., of Niles, Michigan gentlemen cf unlimited means have come into possession of the mines, and contemplate the immediate outlay of 50,000 or ?-10,000 in the erection of such machinery as may be thought necessary to insure successful operation. Tfxas Election. Democratic exchang33 have had much to say about the unfairness of the Texas elaction. A paragraph from the Columbus Times, a Texas paper that supported the Coaservative ticket, very frankly concedes the fairness of the election as well as the good character of the Radicals who were triumphant in that county. It says: Our election has paseed off peaceably, quiet!y, and in order; no similation of disturbance occurring in any shape. The gentlemen whose names floated at our mast-head have been defeated, but we have the assurance of having done our duty in the presentation of their names to the people. Our county officers- elect, although opposed by us, are clever gentlemen, and competent to fill the respective offices to which they have been elected. We are always glad to see cur friends, but when they know that smoke from cigars or pipe nauseates us, and that profanity is offensive . Terrc Haute xprtss. Bah! We were in Cleveland last month, about twelve hours, with Gen. Cruft, and the two of us smoked well, no matter, we lost some time eating. Madison Courier. Bat Gen. Crujt is not the "we" who is disgusted with smoke and profanity. Beata at Col. DicK Kyan. Yve are pained to learn of the sudden death by apoplexy of Col. Richard J. Ryan, which occurred at the residence cf Mrs. Maloney, oa North Illinois Street, about half-past eleven o'clock. Col. Kyan was widely known as a young man of more than ordinary talent, of fine culture, of noble, generous, chivalrous impulses, but still a man whose life was a failure. The late hour at which we hear of his death precludes a lengthy notice of the sad event, and we can only say that in the wide world Dick leaves beiiind him not a single enemy. Of the raany theusands who have been moved to tears by his impassioned eloquence, or to laughter by his droll Irish humor, there is aot one who will not throw the broad mantle of charity ovtr his faulta and remember only his virtues. -Ind. Mirror. Mr. E. W. Halford has been promoted to the position of editor-in-chief of the Indianapolis Journal, which was a sensible thing on the part of its managers. His letters, as the Washington sorrespondent of that excellent paper, lust Winter, attracted no little attention, and afforded evidence of his ability as a writer and of his aptness for the profession. Mr. Halford is a young man of high character, full of energy, and endowed with, fine talents; and his friends justly anticipate for him a brilliant career as a journalist. Cincinnati Chronicle. Mr. Halford 13 a growing man, and will some day take a very high position among the journalists of the country.

The excess of failures in 1SG8 was one hundred and forty-three over thosS for the above named period this year. When it is remembered that the months cf Novemb-jr and December are the dullest ia the year, and that the stringency is then greater than at any ether time, it wiil be found that the croaking3 about hard times are not based upon facts. It 13 true, money is scarce and business dull, but ic is not unusually so for the season. He concludes his letter as follows: "The fact is the Wall Street 'bears' are uoios ail tney can to create a panic, which, of course, would break the price of stocks. ' You will agree with me that every capitalist, as well as merchant, is interested in having the real condition of things understood, and I wish Ecmethiag might be Eaid in your influential paper to counteract depressing and alarming views given by the press. " One thing is sure, if the merchants were not strong, and doing a business upon a real capital, enough has been said ia newspapers to create a panic that would be terrible. "Among the-, camea given in the papers yesterday is that of, spoken of as a heavy firm, &e. Instead of that, it was an insignificant house, that many concerns would net credit nve hundred dollars. J. It is evident that all this clamor is gotten up' ia the interest of the "bears," who live upon panics. Christmas Plunder. What a n-igniScent field for the organization of reform tickets. Why don't some cf our Democratic ex changes insist upon the thin? at once? Is it lecauso the Democratic majority is so largo there? Bloody Affray. A man named Sorrenson was dreadfully cut up, in Wchrstedt's saloon, Evansville, on Friday evening, by two brothers named Ilunnel. The man will probably die. Yincenncs Sun. Sorenson wasn't hurt a bit. Had you clipped your item from the right paper, you would have got the name correct Tiiornton. If the Boone County Pioneer represents the Democracy cf that section of tho State, they may be emphatically " counted in" for repudiation. In the last issue it has this paragraph: "Mungcn's great speech in favor of repudiatiou has struck a sympathetic chord in the popular heart. He is but precious little in advance of the masses. Let bondholders beware 1" cuiWFoayA illiTlFttee. Csawfoed3ille, ltd., Dec. 23, 1SG9. Editors Journal : Although there have been Conventions enough in this place, during the last few weeks to do for the State, there has not happened much of interest to "our part" of the worldWomen, wine and flowers have long occupied the attention of man, but here women, wine and railroads are the constant themes. Several Woman Suffrage Conventions have been held, much to the interest and edification of the peoplcTTind there is some talk of one of tho leaders of the movement running for Congress, Orth and Wallace to the contrary notwithstanding. Tho temperance cause has been agitated some, and now and then rather lively discussions were provoked on the expediency of a temperance party. It is earnestly hoped that the movement may end in sweeping saloons from this place, but tho new "bricks" rising for this specifio purpose are not the best indices of its progress. Much interest has been manifested in the Sunday School Convention, and this great work may do as much or more than all else to create a public sentiment which will stay the tide of immorality. The work on the I. & C. R. R. is being pushed forward, while surveys are now being made to points East and N orth for other road3. From the interest manifested here in this work, Crawfordsvillo promises to be quite a railroad center before many year3 elapse. May the extension of tho E. & C. R. R. make this conduce to the welfare of Souther a Indiana. Quite a large audience assembled to hear Dr. Tuttle's sermon on "The Significance of the Late Church Union," which was delivered in Centre Church on last Sabbath. The Doctor's effort was well worthy his theme, and justified the earnest attention of his many hearers. The Sophomore and Junior Exhibitions on the evenings of the 21st and 22d respectively, closed the First Term at Wabash College. The Junior Exhibition was rather Jong, but many of the speeches were practical, up to the times and well delivered. Tho next term, Col. If. B. Carrington takes the Chair cf Military Science in thj3 College, by appointment of the Government. Tho duties to be required of the students are not yet known, but all hail with joy this new and valuable acquisition to the advantages of Wabash, and will welcome the new department. This is the only College in the State which has received such a favor, and the friends cf Wabash are well pleased with the consideration shown by the Gov-1

Ho had j3t stepped into the office vfcen a boy threw a bunch of shooting crackers under the horse, frihtecin? him so that he at once dashed off at tbe top of his speed with the baggy and child. : Mr. Johnson saw the danger to his child, and started with all his fleetnes3, and overtakicg the buggy climbed info if, seized the lines, and stopped the fiightcncd horse, thus, no doubt, saving the child's life. The scene was a most thrilling one, and those who witnessed it experienced the greatest relief when the frightened horse was checked up.
