PC31.tai!lia BY THE JOniNiiL COS PAST. No. a Locust Stree-t, EvivbmvI15. WEDNEHUAY Dl'.CKJdBEKJ, WW iie CbartV styles our articles proving that tte Democracy fully endorsed the present license law, as "temperance articles." If quoting the record of the Democracy on this question constitutes the articles "temperance articles," the Democratic parly must-bo a temperance party. RcJuctio adalsurdum. The CourUr proposes this morning to reconcile the fact that nine-tenths of tho Democratic members of the Legislature voted for the rrcsent 'compulsory temperance law," with its declaration that "tho Democratic party, through days of darkness and sunshise, have opposed compulsory temperance legislation." It is on interesting case of oil-and-watcr mixing that cannot fail to attract attention. THE Courier speaks of the " learned gentleman " who writes temperanco articles for tho Evansvillc Journal. As there has not been a solitary editorial in tho Journal on the license law but what was written by tho editor, ho feels a, a loss how to return tho compliment of tho Courier, unless it bo by suggesting that tho display of a little learning in its editorials would materially improve tho character and 6tanding of tho paper. Coming. Tho following is a partial list of' tho distinguished gentlemen who have secured rooms at tho Dates House, Iudianapolis, for the Army of the Cumberland reunion on tho 17th instant: Uenerals bhendan Thomas, Ilosccrans, T. J. Wood Palmer, Sooficld, Anson McCook Durbin Ward, Acderson, Dates Hunter Brooks, and D. I4, bcribnen Governors Hayes, of Ohio, an Fletcher, of Missouri. The Terre Haute dry goods men know how to do the " big thing" in tho way of advertising. We notice that tho advertisement of W. S. Hyce & Co. occupies thrco of the large columns of tho Express, and the adVJrtisemcnts of Tuell, RlPLEY & Djeminq and Waiiben, IIoberg & Co. each two columns of tho same paper. Theso advertisements present an appcaranco of thrift and energy that is very attractive to tho people, and wo havo no doubt the gentlemen comprising these business firms realize that advertising pays, and pays well. It is by the public spirit of such men that the reputation of Terre Haute for growth and enterprise has been so greatly increased within the past four or fivo years. lion. K. T. KercheTal. Our ilrpublic.-.n exchanges, in vari ous parts of the State, aro suggcstiDg tho names of gentlemen whoso f riends will advocate their claims to different positions on tho Ilepublican State ticket at the approaching Convention, on the 221 of February. Thus faf.we have heard of no aspirant "from this Congressional District, who manifests any disposition to thrust his claims upon tho attention of tho people. Entertaining, however as we do, tho cpit ion that the old' fashioned custom of having the offices .seek tho men, ought not to become altogether a dead letter, we bring forward tho name of R. T. Kercuevai., of Spencer County, for the olueo of Treasurer of State. Mr. Kercheval , is well known throughout the First Congressional District as a firm, active, and influential Republican. Ho is an excellent canvasser, a good debater, is a man of pleasing address, and will make a candidate of -'whom the party would never be ashamed. Mr. Kerciieval I.3 filled the office of Treasurer of Speooer County for two ' terms." He is a member of tho present State Lcgjslatire, and at its last session gained tVe respect and esteem of all his associates, by his urbanity, attention to business, and sound jadgmeut. It ii especially important that at least two men be placed on tho Republican ticket, who will bo ablo to canvass the State efficiently and successfully. Of all tho candidates mentioned thus far, but one or two make any pretensions whatever to public speaking. On the other hand,' we notice that a majority of the Democratic, aspirants aro men who have had more or less experience as public speakers. Tho battle to bo fought next year will bo a hard one, and if our Stato ticket is not composed of men who will bo both willing and ablo to discuss tho questions at issue in an intelligent manner, the party may expect defeat. Prominent among tho questions to bo discussed will be that of Finance This branch of American politics, Mr. Kerciieval has made a special subjoc! of study, and we think ho will bo found ablo to discuss tho complex question with as much ability, if not more, than can be done by any one spoken of thus far in connection with any; of tho offices to bo filled at tho next election. Mr. KERcnEYAL'a friends from this part of the State, will present his namo to tho Convention, conscious that his namo will add greatly to the strength of tho ticket, and that, if noniitated, hi3 election will bo to tho ad van ago of the Stato as well as creditable tho party. Enterprise. Tho Washington Gazette of this week says: " Steps have been taken to crganiza a company for tho manufacture ot gas in this place. A rolling mill company has also been organized. Tha articles of association of both companies were forwarded to the Secretary of State's offioo daring tho week." The talk of gas at that place is all gas, we should guess. Evansville Courier. That is in bad tasto, coming from tho source it docs. Tho man that does tho locals of that paper should have moro pride for tha placo of his nativity than ti make fun of it. liut he has learned bad liabil.s sine he

S sr. da j at tho Capita! Churches, Ministers, c. Decemeep. 13, 13CD. Editors Journal: I have seen Sunday at the.Capital gazed upon its temples listened to the chimes of its silvery bclh, looked upon and heard its preachers. Waking up this A. jr., with " the same kind of weather" looking in at my window, and as it can't invito rcc cut, or shan't get me out, until I am ready, I'll save my tirao by jotting you down a few of my thoughts. They are much about yesterday. IndianapoHs may bo called " a city of churches." As I stood midway on the north side of the park on Meridian and New York Streets, there are churches on all sides of you, and tho sight is impiriog. At the north-cast corner is the new white etono cdifico of the Second Presbyterian Church, the outside complete, and, within three week?, the inside also, when it will be dedicated with impressive ceremonials, all its living cx-Pators Beecher, Dabb, Tindall with its I resent popular Minister to take part, t is an exhalation of architectural beauty. Is a pet child of Curzon, tho architect, who is a member ot the Church and has taken a just pride in making it all it should be. At the south-cast, at angling corners, are tho two brick Churches, the First Baptist and the First Presbyterian, the latter with its tapering spire rising to tho bight of 17G feet. The building is costly, ($110,000) but from this fioint of observation a failure, tbouh, ooking at it from an easterly or northeasterly point, it is very beautiful. Turnicg then to the south-cast corner, you havo tho new white stone building of Wesley Methodist Church, (liev. C. N. Sims) t V rafters of which arc being set and covered in. It bids fair to rival anyin the city. Its froat is to be flanked by high tow crs rising to tho elevation of one hundred and twenty feet. Tho work is going on with energy and rapidity. Just tack of " Wesley," is the nondescript edifice, raised by the Episcopal Church, of which Mr. Stringfellow was Hector during the war. it is like nothing in haven or on earth. It is medieval, and yet a little too airy.- It is of red brick, belted and capped, and spotted with the yellow Milwaukee brick. It challenges admiration, is like nothing bat itself, and must stand approved by cultivated eyes that love originality and character. Opposite this is the Third Presbyterian Church, and still nearer, tho stecplo cf the German Evangelical Church, of which tho excellent and pious- Mr. Quinius is Pastor. Then over tho roots you oec tho steeples of the Fourth Presbyterian Church and " Christ CJiitrch," with its singular "Aoc $tgiio," which every, body inquires about as to its meaning, and nobody understands. It's a kind of doublo cross and crcsicr, and yet it is neither. It's the ecclesiastical " What is it?" of the city. Other religious edifices are at various distances overtopping tho houses. All the chnroh societies seem to be doing something in the way, of buildingj or improving. . - L . c'i JJat it is not only the buildings that aro noticeable, but the rank of the ministry that is worthy of note. Fresbyteriausm seems to be strong here- I here aro no Jess than eight organized Presbyterian Churches. The Second Church, under tho charge of tho llev. Mr. Edson, has a large cum ber of young men and women in its membership, and ho secures their hearty co-operation. llev. Mr.' Inger soil, of tha Congregational Church, is a very attractive man, and ms church is arrowing. He now holds in his hands a call from Brooklyn, to a large church, who offer a erjpport of four or five thousand dollars besides a compact membership of over four hundred persons.- It is thought he will accept. One of the most popular men at present is ' the Rev. Mr. Sloss, of the Third Presbyterian Church, whom I had tho pleasure ot hearing last night. He is beneath the avcrago height, broad and well set, with a fair, healthy complexion, but as I listened to him, as ue declaimed upon liuther upon Pilote's Staircase," ".the lleformation of the Sixteenth Century " "The Cauncil at Home, and " That great man . wno naa peon waited to our shores with a lovo-fragrance sweeter than the flower whose came he bore," I could not but think that, like the eloquent master of Notre Dame, he grow taller to the gozs of his auditors. oinco Doing, uere l nave atso cccn privileged to hear our former Pastor of Trinity, llev. C. N. Sims. I know of no man who has so great an amount of personal magnetism, when he ad dresses an audience, iiy tho easy flow of his language and his wealth of sympathetic thought, he holds them en mj'por spell-bound- through and through to the end or his discourse. But the city has no preacher of higher culture than the Kev. C. II. Marshall, of tho Fourth Presbyterian Church. His sermons, which arv allcarefully written," are gems of perfected thought. In dealincr with analogies he has Vara gift?; and these made tributary to the great end of leading to Christ and ennoblinar tho christian in his Ufa of holiness. This is tho Church attended upon : by the family of our townsman, Governor Baker, who, I was proud to-learn. was a practical worker in its Sabbath School, whero I found him in . the midat of a large class of young ladies and gentlemen as their beloved and admired teacher. Tho Governor is a veteran in this work, for my earliest recollection of him was, as the teacher of a Sunday School twenty year3 ago, in tho Old Presbyterian Church of iVansvilIol on Second Street, near Main. V Had I time, I would like to eav something of the Young Men's Christian Association, who are making their Sabbath days' work tell. ! At the Congregational Chnreh I met tho Mr. Sinker whoso connection with the explosion at tho Fair was bo unfortunate. Ho is a man much hon ored for his uprightness and probity. Before I saw him, I was told an im portant item connected with the explosion, which was that tho man run-1 ning the saw had tampered with thn index, so that it did not indicate tho amount of steam up, but registeied itj below the fact. At dinner yesterday, also, I met our old citizen II. A. Lawrence, Esq., of Chicago, looking younger than ever; and, as my cyo swept over his venerablo head, I could not sco that there was a single grey hair added by the weight of yours. Asking him what ho was doing in Hoosierdom, with tho peculiar peculiar twinkle ho has in his eye, ho remarked: 'I only como down to do a little courting." So, after thit, f asked only a question or two about his amiable wiio and daughter, and
r, at He sc-cms well, and in Sno spirits. There! I've blown off steam, and even though the weather is net inviting and "wind to the right of us, and wind to the left of vlj, wind to the front, and wind to tho rear" I am goio, both. out, scorning and t'elymg Yours, a3 ever. Packard's Monthly begins a new volume with improved prospects, and high hopes. Ti e field marked out by the publisher is, in many particulars, peculiar, and its cultivation has been quite successful, he informs us, as an reasonable person could have hoped. Wo regard the new volume as an improvement, ia many respects, ppon the old, und think we are safe in predicting for it a largely increased number of subscribers. The Galaxy proposes in order to enable new readers to follow Charles Reade's story, Put Yourself in His Place to furnish every new subscriber a copy of a handsomo volume of 200 pages containing all of the story published up to the January number, lhe programme of the Magazine for 1870, in other respects, is very inviting. A new story from Mrs. Edwards, and one of tho very best Jemalo novelists writing tho Lnglish language, is promised, to begin, probably, on the completion of JUr. Reade s story. Antheny lrollcpc will famish a series of "Editor's Tales," in which he will work, an entirely new vein. Parke Godwin, ono of -tho ablest of American writers, will give the Galaxy a series of noteworthy articles on his torical subjects. Richard Grant White will continue hi3 critical and social essays. Justin McCarthy, whoso skill as an cnectivc magazine writer is per haps untqualed, will supply critical analyses of prominent individuals in politics, science, and letters. A very attractive series of articles will be that by a late Ecclesiastic of the Roman Catholic Church, in which he will give personal recollections of the interior life of Rome, describing the character and aaily life of tho Pope, the cardinals, the priests, monks, eto. Another scrjes likely to attract atten tion will be one dealing trenchantly with the society of to day, under a uniquo form. Science will be repre sented by Drs. J. C. Dalton and J. C.
