We'll bet that young lady is a native of New Albany. Before Justice McTernan. Laura Terry, a colored woman, was arrested on the charge of setting fire to two beds, but the evidence was not sufficient to sustain the charge. Silas and Malinda Letcher (colored) then filed an affidavit against the amiable Laura, stating that they were in bodily fear that she would burn their house down over their heads, and asked that she be bound over to keeD'the Deace. The Courier of yesterday has several items in regard to a quarrel between myself and the local editor of that paper, in which I am placed in a false position before the community, and 1 desire briefly to make a few statements in regard to the facts. For some time past, I have been subjected to personal attacks in the local columns of the Courier, to which I have taken no notice whatever. On Thursday morning last, that paper contained another personal allusion, more offensive than any of its predecessors. Thursdcy afternoon I met Dr. Lauenstein on the corner of Main and Third Streets, and asked him if ho would not have those attacks through his paper stopped. I told him that I had rot replied through the Journal to any of them, and, in fact, that I was not permitted to do so. In answer to my request, he replied that the Journal had been making attacks on Mr. Horrall, and he thought that if the latter pitched into all the editors of the Journal it was all right. I told him that I did not see that a controversy between the chief editor and Mr. Horrall had anything to do with myself. But he declined takiBg any step3 towards stopping these attacks. At this time, Mr. Horrall came along, and I told him that I wanted him to stop his personal attacks on me. Some words passed, in the course of which I said thathe was an exceedingly proper person to accuse any one of cowardice, and reminded him of the time that Mr. Whittlesey slapped his jaws, and Charley Reed, the Treasurer of the Louisville Dramatic Company, had called him a dirty scoundrel, etc., which he did not resent. He denied this statement, upon which I 7 tali him he was a nar, a dog, a airty puppy, &c. j3ut to all this, ho only replied that i hp did not ca
he did not care what I said, so long
a3 I kept my hsads eff his. "If I would only touch, him," he " would show me "-what he would do. After talking a short tiixe longer, he contradicted an assertion that I had made, when I put my left hand against his nose and gave him a push. (I will add hero that I had made up my mind not to strike him hard, for fear, as he is smaller tban myself, that he might say he was attacked by a man who was his physical superior.) As scon as I tapped him on the nose, he snatched Dr. Lauenstein's cace from under his arm, and struck at rae, and having cane in my right hand I warded off his blow. Several passes were made with the canes, when Fleming Darhaui, an officer, ran across the street, and caught hold of me and pulled me away, and held me until he got me on the other side of th9 street, where I was surrounded by a crowd. Horrall turned and walked down Main Street, and that ended the affair. .If i had intended to hurt him, I would simply have knocked him down. I have mads this lengthened explanation because as the courier of yesterday has several items in which it asserts that the local of the Courier "thrashed " the local of the Journal, I htve felt it right and proper-to brand the statements as malicious falsehoods, and tbe writer a sneaking liar. I regret being compelled to make this personal explanation. The public at large take but little interest in these personal matters, and I intend that this shall end the controversy on my part '. 7 ";: Thomas J.'Groves.
