The Baptists are striving to raise a missionary fund of $75,000 for the benefit of the Freedmen. Two hundred colored men are reported to be at Rome, under training for the priesthood. Tin?. TTninn Pravcr Meetin3. which have been in progress in Trinity M. E. Church duriDg the past week, have been pretty well attended, and all present appeared to enjoy the exercises. They will be continued next week in ths Baptist Church, on Third Strest, and we doubt not the numbers will be increased, and the interest materially augmented. ' The religious divisions of the entire population of India are said to be, approximately, as follows: Native Christians . 1,100,000 Buddhists . 3,tHJO,0(,0 Aborogtnes.... ............. 10,000,0u0 Mohammedans-.......-.. 25,0uo,000 Hindoos HO.UOO.UOO Parsees W0.JWU Eurasians................ ....... ui.uuu .Europeans .. Jars.. ... ...... 10. txu Armenians... 5,0OJ In Bengal, with its population of some 40,000,000, it is said that no more than 500,000 children are receiving any education, though certain classes are anxious to have it. Most of that which i3 now afforded is given through the 30,000 native schools, which are described a3 only better than none. Most Grateful Announcement. The Annual Report of the Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer of the Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church shows that the total receipts during the year ending Oct. 31, 18G!?. were $629,105 13: total disbursements, f 624,779 40; balance in the treasury, 54,325 73. The receipts include a balance in the treasury at the beginning of the year of 16,378 42. On the first of August the treasury was carrying a debt of over one hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Since that date the collections of the Fall Conferences have come in, and have proved sufficiently large to pay off every dollar of the debt, and leaves a balance in. the treasury of over four thousand dollars! The whole Church will hear this announcement with the most grateful satisfaction. Western Christian Advocate. Some Religious Chancies in Turret. Since the subject of the Empress Eugenie's visit to Constantinople and the East has been agitated, the French papers have published a great many details relative to Turkey. Some of them are especially interesting. A Paris liberal journal affirms that Turkey shows r. decided leaning to Catholicism, ar.d instances the fact that a Catholic Chapel has been built in the interior of the Sultan's private palace. Nothing could be more singular in the history of the theologies than to see a Mussulman turning Catholic. May we expect to see Abdu-Azis represented in the Ecumenical Council by one of the blaek-stoled Priests? Laconic. That was a brief but brave speech of a brother in tho recent National Baptist Convention at St. Louis, "who, while the question as to what were the obstacles to Sunday School Progress, was under discussion, rose and said, Easiness.
Another brother, at another time, :
while the subject oi revivals wa3 being debated, remarked that any Church that worked for a revival could have it. The Ecumenical. The Tope's Ecumenical Council will be opened on the 8th of December, the anniversary of the Immaculate Conception. Nine hundred Bishops, Archbishops and Patriarchs, each accompanied by a theologian, will form a part of the assembly, together with a hundred theologians of the Pope, almost all laymen, fifty cardinals and eighteen generals of religious orders, the latter escorted respectively by two theologians. A musical mass will be celebrated on the first day, at St. Peter's, in which the most celebrated singers of Italy will take prt. Tho communion service will be administered by the Pope in person, with the singing of Veni, Creator Spiritus and Sub Tuum Presidium. TnouanTFUL, if Queer." A Stranger in New York" writes to the Tribune, that, being caught in the rain at the Church of llev. C. F. Deems, D. D., of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, he was met at the door by the loan of an umbrella by a lady who had brought two, thinking some one might be unprovided. He wonders if the millennium is dawning. SEW E00KS. "WOMAN: Her Rights, "Wrongs, Privileges and Responsibilities. By 1 P. Bkockktt, M. V. This is a book published by the Howe Publishing Company, Cincinnati, Ohio. It seems to be well gotten up, and is most profusely illustrated. A hasty glance at its con tents satisfies U3 that the author takes a very common sense view of the much agitated question of Woman's rights and the many reforms connected therewith. The book may be ordered direct from the publishers, or of agents. GERMAN TALES, by Behtho.d Acer bach, with an Introduction by O. C hhackfoild. 1 Vol. ltf mo., cloth. Price, 81 00. This volume iorms the seventh in the " Handy Volume Series," issued by Messrs. Roberts Brothers, of Bos ton, and for sale by Robert Clarke & Co., Cincinnati. We have so often spoken in commendation of the writ ings of Auerbach, that we need add nothing here. The stories in the present volume are all short and entitled respectively: Christian Gillert's Last Christmas; The Step-Mother ; Benigna; Rudolph and Elizabeth; Erd mutha. Fields, Osgood & Co. have issued the Atlantic Almanac for 1870. It has two full page colored illustrations, one representing " Spring Tinas " and tha other "Shad Fishing oil' tho Hudson. Ueside3 these there are about thirty other illustrations, by Darley, Gilbert, Eytinge, Fenn, IIo mer, IIoppiD, Perkins and others of the best artists. Tho list of contents includes contributions by Edward E Hale, W. D. Howels, Thackeray, Miss Phelp3, Thos. M. Brewer, Ten nyson, J. T. Trowbridge, J. Russel Lowell, Kate Field and others, and tho usual calender and astronomical information by Charles S. Pierce. It is printed in elegant style, and the demand for it is eo large that tho publishers have been delayed in issuing it. It will have a great circulation. Note3 in England and Italy, by Mrs. Hawthorne, New York: G. P. Peterson & Son; Cincinnati: Robert Clarke & Co., wero written twelve years ago, without any intention of putting them in print. The entreaties of friends have, however, brought about their publication. The author show3 herself the fitting companion of her gifted and lamented husband, for the sketche3 and criticisms of scenery and art to which the greater part of tha book is devoted, are exeedingly graceful, suggestive and intelligent, and often worthy of the pen that wrote " Our Old Home," and the " Scarlet Letter." Skipton Castle, Bolton Priory, York Minster, Lincoln Cathedral, Old Boston, Peterboro Cathedral and Newstead Abbey are the principal objects noticed in England. The Burns Region, Glasgow, Dumbarton, Loch Lomond, Inversmaid and the Bridge of Allan, chiefly occupied her attention in Scotland, while Romo and Florence and their wonderful galleries and antiquities monopolized most of her attention in Italy. Those persons who are projecting tours in the section described by Mrs. Hawthorne, 'will find the book valuable. THE SKETCH BOOK. By "WASHINGTON Irvio. Author's Revised Edition. New York : G. P. Putnam & Eon. Evansvllle : Fish & Bartek. The holiday Eeason or, as it might with fully a3 much propriety be termed, the Gift Season is rapidly approaching, and soon will cheer us with its presence. Books al ways occupy a prominent position among the annual friendship offerisg3 which have como to be re garded as essential to make Christmas worthy its prefix "Merry," and the inquiry with many is, " What books shall I buy? We direct the attention of tbese anxious inquirers to the two books above. They are part of the celebrated Knickerbocker edition of Washington Irving's writings, are most elegantly printed on tinted paler and bound in muslin, with upper edges in gilt. They are profusely illustrated with beautiful steel engravings, including, in the Sketch Book, a fine likeness of tho author in his younger days. Of -the literary merits of either of theso elegant books wo need not enter into any discussion, which could only, at best, end in panegyric. Oar school children have found their readingbooks adorned with such sketches as "The Voyage," "The Wife," "The Broken Heart," "WestmiBster Abbey," &c, copied from tho Sketch Book; while Joe Jefferson, the groat
7
actor,1 has made Rip Van mnklo almost as familiar to Americans 89 their own language. The Crayoa Miscellany is com posed of a description of "A Tour on the rrairies." " Abbottsford," the home of Walter Scott, and Newstead Abbey," the residence of Lord Byron. No boy, having any leve of adventure, can read the charming descriptions of the prairie country without the greatest pleasure, while the pictures of the homes of two of Engand's most celebrated poets cannot fail to delight all ages and sexes. Messrs. Fish & Batter have ar rangements with the publishers, by which they can furnish any or all of Irving's writings, which compose the Knickerbocker edition, and we earnestly recommend parents to include some or all the work3 of the most delightful and genial of American au thors in their usual Christmas pres ents. THE FAR EAST; Or Letters from Egypt, Palestine, ana utner lianas oi uie urient, illustrated with Eneravinss. Maps.&c. Bv N. C. Bttrt, D.I). Cincinnati: Rob't t'LAKKK & COr These letters originally appeared in the Cincinnati Gazett:, where they attracted no little attention, and were read by numbers with great interest The favor with which they were re ceived induced the author to print them in book form. Messrs. Clarke &Co., the publishers, have done their work neatly. The type is clear, the paper of a cream-colored tint, and the binding in green muslin. The en cravings and map3, as indeed the whole book, will be found very valuable to Sunday School teachers and Scholars. Tire HISTORY OF JOSEPH BONA PARTE. By John S. C. Abbott. New York: Habpjsr fc Brothers. Cincin nati : Robert Clark & Co. Mr. Abbott seems to have lost none of his admiration for the Bona partes. His Lifo of Napoleon made him tho object of sharp and bitter criticism, but has not apparently con vinced him of the error of his wor ship or the unworthiness of his idol. The present history is gotten up in an attractive style for young people, and will convey to all who read it not a little most valuable historical infor mation. Joseph iionaparte was so intimately associated with tho great NaDoIeon thai the life of the one necessarily includes much that is interesting in the life of the other. Mr. Abbott is publishing a series of these histories which will, when com Dieted, form a handsome historical cabinet. The December Aursery, with its rich freight of pretty pictures and pleasant stories lor little loiks, is issued. Almost every page has a pic ture. and a eood one. too. This com pletes Vol. VI., and we advise parents who want to give their young children a great deal of pleasure the coming year to subscribe lor the JSursery, J. L. Shorey, 13 Washington Street, Boston, is its publisher. The Uncle Sam Series, for very little children, is intended to super cede the rhymes which have hitherto held possession of the nursery, by ballads that shall be equally amus ing, and impart a beautiful moral, or relate useful facts. Four numbers have thus far been issued, viz: Rip Van Winkle s JNap, by E. U. btedman, with colored illustrations by Eytinge; The Story of Columbus, by Trowbridge, with colored illustrations by Fredericks; Putnam the Brave, by R. H. Stoddard, illustrated in colors by Fredericks, and the Ballad of Abraham Lincoln, by Bayard Taylor, with illustrations in colors by Eytinge. The pictures are spirited, as well as gorgeous, and the covers are also beautifully illuminated. Boston: Fields, Osgood & Co.; Cincinnati: Robert Clarke & Co. The illustrations cannot fail to plcaso the children, but we cannot help thinking that the poetry will never supplant the wonderful stories by Mother Goose and others, which have for years been the delight of the little people.
