Dionysius, ,the tyrant, stripped tho '3tacue Japiter Olympus of a robe of massive gold and substituted a cloak of wool, saying: "Gold is too cold in winter and too heavy in summer. It behooves us to take care of Jupiter." Lacon. If you wish to be miserable you must think about yourself, about what you want, what you like, what respect peopla ought to pay you, what people think of you, and then to you nothing will bo pure. You will spoil everything you touch; you will make sin and misery for yourself out of everything which God sends you; you will be as wretched as you choose. Rev. Charles Kingsly. Fatter llyaclnthe's Eicomraunfcalion. The cable reports that Father Hyacinthothe seceding Catholic monk, is menaced with tho Eontenco of major excommunication. The Roman Church recognizes two kinds of excommunication, the less and the greater. The former consists in prohibiting lrom participation in the sacraments and in public worship, being nearly the same with tho dismissal of Protestant Churches. In the Catholic Church it is goneral'y imposed upon those who cherish intercourse with anathematized persons or those who have beea subjected to the greater or major 'jxcommunication. This punishment cuts off the offender entirely from the body of the Church and the society of the faithful, and is said to bo proclaimed only when a sin has been "mortal, manifest and scandalous." Such, it seems, is thought to bo the sin of Father Hyacinthe, who, for all that appears, continuing the purity of his life and sincerity of his motives, has by the force of reason been led to doubt some of the doctrines and tho practices of the Roman Church. The infliction of such a punishment on so distinguished a son of tho church in the nineteenth centurywill beacurious incident. Whether it can be carried out without a severe internal struggle in his Church, and without important consequences to the world, r-rjain3 to bo seen. Boston Journal.

A HISTORY OF NEW YOKK, from the Beginning of tbe World to the End of the Dutch Dynasty; containing, among many Surprising and Carious Walters, sttie Unutterable Ponderings of Walter the Doubter, the Disastrous Projects of William the Testy, and the Chivalrlc Achievements of Peter the Headstrong, the three Dutch Governors of New Amsterdam; being the only Authentic History of the Times that ever hath been or ever will be published. By Uikdbich Ksickirbocsir. Complete in one volume. New York: CJ. P. Putnam & f.ont. Evansville: if & Bartek. Wo are careful to give the title of this remarkable History, as wo find it recorded on the first page of tho book itself, for we are well assured that nothing short of that would convey any idea of the manifold and wonderful events recorded in its seven books of sixty-six chapters. Tho first thing that strikes the attention of the student who takes up this volume for the purpose of familiarizing himself with tho early history of the great commercial metropolis of this country, is its comprehensiveness. It starts from the beginning of the world. The first book is dcvotd entirely to that branch of the history. It treats of the creation, and demonstrates, among other things, that the patri arch Noah committed an irreparable oversight in not haviDg four sons, and portrays tho, trouble occasioned philosophers because of that oversight. A great many perplexirg questions in philosophy arc very satisfactorily disposed of in this first book, and will never, we presume, be called in question again. The gravity and deliberation with which, the author pursues his investigations, are most charmingly illustrated in the beginning of his Second Book. Wc copy the story for the benefit of those who are always in a hurry to have an enterprise finished before it is well beguu. Says the worthy Diedrich: " My great-grandfather by the mother's side, Hermanns Von Clattercap, when employed to build the large stone Church at Rotterdam, which stands about three hundred yards to your left after you turn off from the Boomkcys, and which 13 so conveniently constructed that all the zealous Christians of Rotterdam prefer sleeping through a sermon thero to any other Church in tho city my great grandfather, I fay, when employed to build that famous church, did in the first place send to Delft for a box of long pipes, then having purchased a new spitting box and a hundred weight of the best Virginia, he sat himself down and did nothing for the space of three months but smoke most laboriously. Then did he spend full three months more in trudging on foot, and voyaging in Trekschrist, from Rotterdam to Amsterdamto Delft to Ilaerlem to eyden to the Hague, knocking his head and breaking his pipe against every church in his road. Then did he advance gradually nearer and nearer to Rotterdam, until he came in full sight or the identical spot whereon the church was to bo built Then did he spend three months longer in walking round it and round it, contemplating' it, first from ono point of view, and then from another now would he bo paddled by it on the canal now would he peep at it th ough a telescope from the other side of the Meuse, and cow would he take a bird's eye glance at it from the top of one of those gigantic windmills which protect the gates of
tlae citv. The pood folks of
the place wero on the tip toe nt expectation ana im patience; notwithstanding all the tuimoil of my great-grandfather, not a symptom of tho church was yet to beEeen; they even began to fear it would cover be brought into the world, but that its great projector would lie down aEd die in labor of the mighty plan he had conceived. At length, having occupied twelve good months in puffing and puddling, and talking and walking having traveled ever all Holland, and even taken a peep into France and Germany having smoked live hundred and ninety-nine pipes, and three hundred weight of the best Virginia tobaceo my great-grand father gathered together all that knowing anc industrious class of citi zens who peeler attending to any body's business sooner than their own, and having pulled on his coat and fine pair of breeches, he advanced steadily up and laid the corner stone of the church, in presence or the whola multitude just at the com mencement of the thirteenth month. The great-grandson of this admi rable old contractor fails to inform us how much time elapsed before the church was completed, but who can doubt that tho edifice thus begun was promptly finished, and was as durable as the patience of the worshippers for whose accommodation it was built. We quote this story of the great progenitor of the Knickerbockers that from it our people may learn a lesson of patience. They have teen finding fault with the Directors of the Carmi Road for not going ahead faster with that enterpiise, when not more than six months fchave elapsed since their election, and they have ordered an engineer from Cincinnati, who, it is anticipated, will proceed with equal rapidity to make a preliminary survey There are many other lessons of wisdom to be found in this -valuable book. Among others, the author Droves to the satisfaction of himself and friends that a large portion of the troubles which, annoy and depress cities arise from the fact that in " the selection of Aldermen or Councilmen sufficient attention has not been paid to tho avoirdupois of the candidates Were none but men of two hundred and over chosen to these position?, and fat in proportion, the people of every city would lead quiet and peace able lives, and would never be dis turbed by harassing projects for publie improvements. But we have not space to enume rate all the noticeable things in this wonderful book. We can only add that it i3 one of the Knickerbocker editions of Irving'a complete works the most beautiful ever published Its cream tinted paper, fine engrav ings, and clear typo make it an orna ment to any library. Messrs. lish & Barter have arrangements by which they can promptly furnish the com plete edition to any who may desire it. Parents will find that the writings of this favorite American author constitute the very befit, as well as most interesting, books they can place in the hands of their children The New York Sun tells the fallowing Wall Street "story of a day:" Smith was a man of millions this morn ; To-night he's a bankrupt and all forlorn. Last night he slept in a princely bed. To-night on husks he must. tos his head. This morn In a emipe he rode downLike a lord he rode through the dizzy town. Jones was a very poor man this morn ; To-night he's a millionaire newly born; For he watched his chance and went for stoclfs And made a. fabulous pile of rocks". Las-t night he slept in a pauper's bed; To night soft pillows will rest his head. This morning he walked to the (Stock, Exchange.
