The City Council held a meeting last night, but no business was done of a publie nature that it is desirable to publish. Tiie most of the time of the session was taken up in perfecting the Bond Register, and marking on the book all the bonds that had been paid and not noted. The meeting also figured on the amount of money that it would be necessary to raise by the tax levy for this year, in order to meet the outstanding liabilities of the city fall ing due. The amount of the levy and

A Dastaedly Attempt Moas
Scoudselism. It dees seem that we have lurking in our midst the vilest set of scoundrels that ever went unhung. Another diabolical attempt at crime was made on Thursday night, but, fortunately, the villain was foiled. On Thursday evening, about eight o'clock, some unmitigated wretch went into' the house of Fred. Heuke, orse of the proprietors of the Evansvillo Woolen Mil's, who lives oa the coraer of Sixth btreet and First Avenue," and attempted to shoot Mrs. Heuke and the children. He snapped a pistol several times, but the weapon did not go off, The family screamed as loudly as "passible, and the man was induced to leave the house for 1 fear of detection. He ran out the front door, but went around to the back part of the house, and tried to effect an entrance, but did.not sue-; ceed In his'attempts he' broke down the gate; ' : : - - : - -' ' ' 1 . i Tha screama of the frightened family attracted the attention of the neighbors, who rushed to the scene of tho alarm. Mr. Henke had left his house but a few minutes before, and was soon overtaken by a messenger, and returned. Search was made foij the villain, but he could not be found. It is not known who the guilty person was. " It is supposed that he was disguised. It would not ba' healthy: for that chap to fall into the hands of the Lamasco people. , f ' Good Joke.
