The New York Post says the ire?ulariti-33 in the Methodist Bjek Concern are owing to the fact that tha business has rapidly grown to mammoth proportioa, without any proper system of checfc3 havioj? been adopted to protect the interests of the Concern. Everything was done so loosely, each per- j son concerned in the management j having placed implicit confidence in his associates. Dr. Porter gave the baying of pip-i? to his eon, who is a paper broker, for the purpose of securing him a position in the business community; an J, it is probable, without any thought that the interests of the Methodist Book Concern would thus be joopordiaed. No person ofa cially connected with tho establishment is under any suspicion of having intentionally done anything wrong. The New. York Timet siys the crash iu stocks Tuesday afternoon ha3 seriously affected many houses which escaped the crash in gold last week. Houses which, suffered by iho fall ia the gold market, and were brought almost to the verge cf ruin, could cot be expected to withstand the double shock, and it was expected that yesterday would reveal the fact that a very large number of firms have gone under. If the Gold Exchange Bank shouU fail to me:t its obligations, or, if a run should be made on that institution, it i expected that the crash ia VV.l Street will b entirely overwhelming. That the bank is in a critical condition, is felt certain. That it has lost the confidence of the brokers, is a fact; and, with this support withdrawn from it, the end of that institution must soon follow. The Tribune says the feelicg against the Gold Exchange Bank is jastiy deeper than at any previous time, and the general uncertainty in Wall Street continues, with aa expectation on the part of many that very troublous times are just ahead. Jdi ..Vrfi NSW TORE Stormy Dtbato In the 6oIu Uoom Statement of the ftold Exchasgc Bank Presented to lha Eaard. New loss, Sept. 29. Stormy deDates m the (jOid lioom, alternate remarkable depression and buoyancy on the Stock Exchange, stock failures and receiverships and injunctions, form a group oi events wnich make the day without an equal in the annals or V all btrcet. At the early session of the Gold Board the following was presented: ' ' - ' - STATEMENT OF THE NEW .YORK COLD EXCHANGE BANK. To the Comm issioner of the Gold Hoard: An ofScial of the Bank went into tho Gold Boom on the morning of the 21th inst.. and suggested to a few that it would be impossible to clear the transactions cf that day on ac count cf an attempted corner, but on consultation it wa3 decided that it was the duty cf the bank to make the attempt, even at some sacrifice. The bank assumed the clearing movement in the usual manner and received. m the payment of balances, a very large amount of gold and Currency. It was necessary to restore a large portion of those amounts to the dealers, or widespread disaster would have followed. To do this, the bank was forced to depart from the rule of receiving alt balances before paying any, and went on paying dealers a portion of the balanca of their statements, reserving a afe margin where practicable, and trusting to the dealers to make good any over dealings on the final ssttlcmcot. This" was the cour.-e pursued on Tuesday aod Saturday. On Saturday a committee wa? appointed at an a informal meeting of - the dealers to eoarcr with the Directors, who went "iato an investigitioa, extending through Saturday and Sunday, on the plan to declare nine dealers rejected from the clearing, and assume tho rest as good the only basis of settlement they deemed practicable. The bank acted on this in paying, dealers, on Monday. . The emergency of" the settlement with the Cleaiiog lloufcof the banks on Monday and Tuesday, was passed by transferring to tha Committee of the Clearing House a sufficient amount to teenre the balanco in -the bank. Tha bank has cow at its control, after settlement with the Cicariog House Bank, an amount not far trom its capita!, and surplus with which to liquidate ' tbr dealers' statements, a3 soon as it can ba ascertained what is due from tho bank to the dealers and from the dealers to the bank. It u the expectation that these results an bo approximated today, and from ail the evidence now accessible, wc bciiave the bank to be solvent and able to pay all its debts. No complications exist at present except on our dealers' statements. The bank has not failed or suaponded. It has paid alt its obligations as stated. It paid Monday's obligations at the Clearing Houe, in gold at par, and on Tuesday f 1,000,000 in gold and say $1,300,000 in securities. Signed II. M. Benedict, President. September 2S, 1809." ' The committee of twenty, appointed by the Gold Exchacgo, worked steadily on the statements ot dealers since 4 V3l , yesterday, and at 1 P.M. only two statements remained to be received thoso of Smith, Gould & Martin, and Knickerbocker & Co. The net result, as far as ascertained, is that the dealers aro "short" with the Gold Exchange Clearing House about $10,000,000 of gold, which Smith, Gould & Martin are offering to sell them at 135. There appears to be no doubt that the committee will succeed in effecting the clearings on Friday's business, the settlement ! being made on a basis determined upon yesterday. The difference between 135 and the actual price will remain to be adjusted between the dealers themselves. At 3:45 the committee of twenty reported to the Gold Boom, iu executive session, that they had referred the making up of a statement from the tickets of Smith, Gould & Martin, to coaefctent aocountants, and requested to be released from further duty. The report wa3 accepted, and it wa3 agreed that the transactions of Friday be settled. The Exchange, Clearing nou-e aud Board adjourned till to-morrow. The President of the Gold Room has been served with an injunction. granted on the application ot Smith, Gould, Martin & Co., restraining him from selling gold on their account, according to rule. A resolution was passed by the New York Stock Exchange to deal in gold in the Long Boom until such time as the governing committee ef feet a plan establishing a gold room under the direction of this Association. Tho S:ock Exchange, later in the day, passed a resolution to deal iu gold in tL3 hall of tho oid Open Board of Stock Brokers, the dealings to begin to-morrow at lO o'elock. A meeting of a Joint Committee, representing the New York City Bank, Clearing House and New York Gold Exchange Bank, wa3 held in the parlor of the Clearing House. At this niseting the Gold Exchangij Bank, which made no clearings today, proposed to the Clearirg House Committee that the other banks should advance 20 per cent, on the 52,500,000 of gold paid by the Gold Exchange Bak yesterday, and the day before, in the settlement of their indebtedness at the Clearing House, which would enable them (the Gold Exchange Bank) to pay their entire indebtedness. Tho effect of this would be to release the otter securi ties held by the Uoniuiiftee, and give the Gold Exchange Bank about $300,000 in currency. Ssvcral banks ! haJ agreed to furnish the means to carry out this proposition, when it was Jearned that the Bank had been j put in the hands of a receiver, con-! gequently, the negotiations were ' stopped. , I The injunction was granted by Judge Cardoza, on application of a1 person claiming to be a creditor of the bank. The application for a permanent receiver ia returnable next Monday. Ia the meantime Au Browo, of the law firm of Brown, Hall & Vanderpool, has been appointed temporary reoeiver. The associated backs agreed, in response to the application of a committee of twenty, to keep open to certify to checks, &c , until 4 o'clock this afternoon, and if necessary, until 6 o'clock. At the Stock Exchange the failures of Charles A. Meigs & Co., Julian A Co., and of -Fuller, Treat & Cox were r jported, and stocks were sold out for them under the rule.
