Intolerable. The inlets to the Locust Street Sewer, between Sixth and Eighth Streets, emit a most horrid stench indeed. The villainous odor is observed all the way to the river at thj various inlets. This ia just what is to be expected so long as the offal from sausage manufacturers, and other villainous compounds are poured into the sewer. If the quality of the sausage is to be judged by the stench that the factory emits, , we don't want our's." any of the saussga "in J5S-Po3t Office and Bill Head Boxes, for sale very cheap, at tho Journal Office. Harry Macartiiy. Wo learn that Harry Macarthy, the great character, will pay us a visit next week. IIo has recovered, however, and expects to perform at the Opera House during the coming week. Off for Arkansks. Mr. K. L. Bach, for a long time associated with Cipt. County Commissioner's Court. Tho County Commissioners will meet again on Monday, and one of the most important matters upon which they will be called to pass will bo tho awarding of the bids for tho 612,000 loan, on county bonds, for the conetruction of the Pigeon Creek bridge at the Crescent City Springs. -Bankers and capitalists are especially interested. Valuable Real Estate at Auction. We call attention to tho Auction Sale at 2 o'clock TO-DAY, at the Court House, of the valuable business property known as Ilallock's Block, on Fourth Street," near Walnut comprising four three-story substantial brick buildings, with metal roofs each having deep, dry cellar?, and six finished dwelling rooms two in the rear on the first floor, and two in each ot the second and third stories all very convenient as business houses, with dwelling accommodations. The very host American Peas of all the different brands can be found at tho Journal Office. Postponed. It will be remembered that we last week made an item that Col. Buchanan had gone to Petersburgh, Ind., . for the purpose of defending Crane, who murdered a man at Winslow last March. The trial was called up before Judge Baker, of Vincennes, but it was found impossible on the first day to impannei a jury, aa nearly every one had formed an opinion on the case. The Judge then cent out to the outskirts of the county for a "special venure of forty-eight jurors, and the next day, after the Court had secured a jury, the defendant filed an affidavit that he did not believe, he could get justice under Judge Baker, and asked that the case be tried' by another Juue. Judge Baker announced that he f, ould call in, Judge Jas. G. Jones, anil the trial was postponed till next December. jgQf- A large stock: of Ink Stands, ranging in price from fifteen cents to $5, for sale at the Journal Office.
gTEiMEOlT ACCIBEXT. Ihe Fanny BrandcU Knns Through Herself, Expends Pitman, Piston and MC" Head. Three Lives Xo:t. By the arrival of the Fanny Brandeis last night, we learn the following particulars of tho accident to that steamer at the Grand Chain, on Thursday raornirj?, cn her return trip from Cairo. As she was crossing the Chain, she broke a wrist and threw her pitman, piston and ,lT" head into tho river, leavicg the ejlioderhead and piston-hcad in the cylinder The beat immediately filled with the expanding" steam from the cylinder, but fortunately no one was hurt in tho slightest degree. Unfortunately, however, one , white man and one necro of the deck crew and a negro deck passenger, became panic stricken and jumped overboard, and were drowned. Their names are not known. This is an unfortunate accident to Captain Miller and Kitt Rudd, who have had a series cf bad luck for a year rast, r.nd it is the more uufortunate, a3 it was designed that thi3 should be the la3t trip of the Brandeis. It was fortunate, however, that the disaster was no-worse. Base Ball. The Evansville Base Ball clubs are baviug fine sport on their grounds every Saturday. They will tj.veaa interesting .game this afternoon, and as the weather promises to be fine; we doubt not many ladiea and gentlemen will avail them selves of this opportunity of witnessing seme fine playing. The wagon will be at its usual starting point at 2 o'clock, to-day, and will leave for the grounds promptly at fifteen minutes past 2 o'clock, and it will be to the interest of players to bo on hand at that time, as the wagon will not wait. Do not fail to notice the change of tinn. The fine weather will not last long, and thoso who desire to play or to witness good playing should seize time by. the forelock and go to-day. , Justice Emery's Court. The surety of peace caee, of which we mado mention in the Journal of yesterday, as pending in Justice Emery's Court, resulted yesterday, in the parties meeting in court and effecting a treaty of amity and friendship, agreeing to exchange visits, be sociable " in love preferring one another," and the case was dismissed, the defendant agreeing to pay the costs. A proposition that tho parties should ride home in the saino hack was overruled le3t the feud might be revived and tho alfiir. settled after tho style Stall 1 "H - -s or Alien and lucuooie. rromcem-. onstrations last evening, we are inclined to believe the fire of enmity is on'y smothered, not quenched. A new eruption may be shortly expected. A Serious Accident. Mr. A. Sehwaegeilc, the well known sign painter of this city, and his son Philip, met with a serious accident about 10 o'clock jesterday morning. They wero together on a swinging scaffold, engaged ia painticg the sign on the front of the Union office, in Washington Hou:e Block, on Third Street, when tho gcaSfold gave way, and they were precipitated to the pavement, a distance of nearly twenty feet. Both sustained : serious injuries, though, happily, no bones were broken. They were taken up insensible and conveyed home in a carriage, and Dr. Legler w.i3 called to their aid. If they are not injured internally, of which fears are entertained, they will soon be out again. ' The greatest care should be ob served in rigging swinging scaffolds, as such accidents are frightfully frequent. " 2 - Recorder's Court. The moral epoch . is ended, the dog star rages again. The Recorder is again in the chair of judgment, and Justice has resumed her sword and scales. Tho Recorder's Court was again busy yesterday, and the city lock-up, alias Hotel de Royston, is again doing a lively business. James Brown was charged with having committed an assault and battery on a fellow beirg, and like the fellow in New Orleans who wa3 sent to the penitentiary for stealing, " the suit went agin him." The Recorder wanted 510 05, but Brown was short. IIo wasn't one of the " Bulls " at the " Gold Room " yesterday, and had no share ia the eleven millions realized. It was finally agreed that if he would pay $7 to day, the balance would be remitted. John Stobbs sampled too much boomerang whisky and fell from the ranks. He was picked up as a straggler, and taxed ?5 43. He gave security, and made a graceful exit by center. Frank Dean (no relation of our friend Bill Dean, Ex-Councilman of the Second Ward, nor of Dean Richmond the famous New York politician) was not onij drunk but disorderly, and was required to contribute to the school fund $4 60, which he contributed like a little man. A few other cases were continued until to-day, and it is not altogether unlikely that Judge Willard will, this afterncon, deliver an elaborate opinion on mo mgniy important question: '' Is a white man or boy, who goes to a negro ball and raises a disturbance, meaner than a well-behaved negro?" Court of Common Pleas. There was no case of general public interest before the Court of Common Pleas yesterday, and the monotony of the proceedings' were only relieved by a slight cbulition of feeling on the part of an attorney, because of a difference of opinion between himself and the Judge on a point of law. We never ; saw a lawyer who did not, in his own
estimation, know just as mucn law as
. .' s t any Judgs, if not a little more, and most lawyers retain this Battering self-estimate until they become Judges of the Supreme Court of the United States. It i3 natural. Personal. Mr. Cyprian Preston arrived ' home yesterday, from a lengthened sojourn East. Mr. Charles Viele and family are expected ia a day or two. Mr. George Viele arrived, home several days ago, in fine health. E. D. Owen, of New Harmony; J. S. Bigelow, of Indianapolis, and S. J. Bingham, of Hazelton, are registered at the Sherwood House. A.LL Seas Over. The Courier, a day or two ago, insinuated that our distinguished fellow-citizen, Hon. John Ingle, Jr., was cn route from Europe and " half seas over."- We are happy to learn that Mr. Ingle arrived in New York safely and in good health on -Wednesday evening, and will, it is expected, arrive at homo by to night's train. He will be warmly welcomed by hia many friends here. Bitten et a Doa. We regret to learn that Mr. John Blangy, who retides on the point opposite this city, was severely bitten by a ferocious dog, on Thursday night,, under the following circumstances: A neighbor, who is absent from home, left his premises in charge of Mr. Blanfy including his dog, a large and ferocious mastiff, which was chained. Blarjgy had made friends with the dog,. or;, at least, supposed ho had, having: frequently fondled him after feeding him. Oa Thursday night, after feeding lira and patting him on the head, be was about to loosen hi chain, nhich had become tangled, when the dog seized him by the wrist, mangling it badly, and finally, as he was freeing himself, the dog seized him' near the -elbow, inflicting a very painful wound. His injuries gave him great pain, and made him very sick for some hours. Ho was much more comfortable last night; but will have a sore arm for some time. ' t" Bathing His Feet to Keep His Head Cool. An old white headed man without a hat was perambulating the streets yesterday, evidently under the influenco of mean whi.-ky. Lata in the evening he wandered lown to the river at the mouth of the Main Street Sewer, and laid down close to the water's edge with his feet io the river and his bo Jy lying parallel with the sluice leading from the mouth of the sewer to the river. Had he rolled over once he would have been in the water in the sluice, and probably drowned. Had such been the result, we do not know that any particular loss to the community would have been sustained, except that the county might have Ineu put to the expense of burying him. We have noticed the same man on the streets intoxicated for two or three days, annoying every body he met. Why is he cot taken up and sent to tho Poor House or out of the city? A Stray Rail. During the racent low water, wc noticed a. bar. of railroad iron lying upon the wharft and now, after having been again submerged, it b again in sight. It be longs, we believe, to the E., II. & N. Railroad, and is one of tho lot of rails carried from thia city to Henderson, by tho Sallis V. last Spring, but was accidentally left behind. We are told that two or three rails of the same lot wero recently discovered by beys in the river swimming, below lowwater mark. As each rail is worth some $25 or 30, it would be well to have them fished out and sent for ward to where they belong. Knocked Down. -We are ' told that one of tho women who were par ties to too surety ot peace case, settled by compromise yesterday, as mentioned elsewhere, took a toast or two in honor of the occasion, and afterwards fell in with a man who had been a friend of each of the high contracting powers. A controvcisy arose between them, which resulted in the man knocking the woman down. No airests had been made up tj midnight, so far as we could learn. This is certainly an interesting episode in the history of our city. Up Again. Jim Mulligan, who has figured very extensively for years past in the Police Courts, is again in trouble. Having indulged, in .the chronic weakness drinking too much boomcniekle, he got into a difficulty with a shop-keeper on Water Street and was about cleaning out the premises when Tom Royston, Chief of Police, happening along, requested Jim to go with him, and he went. If Jim would keep sober, he could keep out of trouble, but, Jim, unfortunately, will drink. Cloud: I am not dis posed to believe all I see and bear in reeard to patent medicines, nor am 1 disposed to give them credit for half the merit which a good many of them claim, but 1 am in duty bound to make the following acknowledgment in refer ence to your Invigorating Cordial, which, by the way, is made with open formula, and lor which you claim, I believe, no mysterious or secret properties. - In 18541 was broken down in health, by becoming overheated in the harvest field ; and for thirteen yearsespecially duriDg'the Summer, I suffered f rom bil ious derangement, and a most annoy ing nervous debility so much eo that during warm weather I was wholly unfitted for business and had almost despaired of enjoying again my former robust health. When you sent me the cae of Cloud s Invigorating Cordial, with tho assurance that if it failed to cure, you would charge othing, I had scarcely enough faith to make the trial: but I finally did so, and to make a long story short, I am now enjoying as good health as before my misfortune, and I know it to be due to the restorative properties of your Cordial. On several occasions after my nerves and liver had regained their proper tone, I had slight relapses, which were speedily cured by a few doses of your medicine.
