The Territory of New Mexico, which will soon become a State, is do cidedly Republican. At the last election, Chaffee, the Republican candidate for Delegate to Congress, was elected by a majority of between 2,500 and 3,000. We have seen no Demceratic rooster flapping bis wiDg over this result. A NEW theatre ha8 bean opened in Helena, Montana Territory, with Miss Fanny JJ. Price as the leading fctar. At the opening of the theatre, 108 seats were soil at auction at from $10 to 15 per seat. Mi-;s Fanny seem3 to be as popular in Montana es the ii in Evansville. . The lloyal Insurance Company", of New York, contest the payment jf a policy of 10,000 to the second, wife of a deceased policy holder, on the ground that tho policy waa made out in the name of the first wife, and was not changed on the remarriage after her death. Second wives will have to watch tho insuranca companies more closely. ' All the officer.' and soldiers of th Army of the Cumberland are requested to meat at the office of tho Adjutant General of the State at lndiau-apoli-", on Saturday at half-past three o'clock r.M. The object of the meeting is to take tho necessary steps toward arranginsfor the annual meeting, which will be held in that cily on tho 15th and lGth of December, and it is hoped there will bo a good attendance. .The Pittsburg Commercial says that Secretary UouiWELL, during his recent visit to his home at Groton, Massachusetts, made carclul inquiries into the pecuniary condition of his poorer townsmen, with a view to testing the condition of the majority of tho people in the rural districts of the country generally. He found that they live better than they did before the war, have fewer uiortnascs and more money iu thu saving batik. And this will probably be the result of a careful investigation extended throughout the Union the cry of the rich richer anl the poor poorer, to tho contrary notwithstanding. Father Hyacinth ha addressed a lotter to the Father of his order at Romo announcing that he abandons his convent and will ceafe to preach in the Church of Notro Dame iu Paris. He declares thit he catmot obey the orders of the Holy Sec, and protests before the Pope and Council against the doctrines and practices of the llomish Church, which- ore not in accordance with the principles of Christianity. We suspect the Pope will not inhale the fragrance of that Hyacinth with any great degree of satisfaction. The letter no doubt created somewhat of a sensation in Paris, where it wa first published. Gen. Wilsox calls on the officers and soldiers cf the "Cavalry Corps of the Mississippi," to convene iu Louisville on .the 17th cf November for the purpose of gathering facts pertaining to the history of the mounted troop. While Wilson's Raid, one of tho most successful expeditions of the war, did not receive that attention in the North it deserved, it will never be forgotten by the people of the South. Son e of them, it is stated, actually date tho birth of their children a so many years before or so many years after " Wilson's Raid." The gathering of tho survivors of Wilson's Raiders will ba an interesting spectacle for the rebel element which has always been so bitter in Louisville. Premonitory of the union of the two branches of tho Presbyterian Church, tho newspaper organs of the old and new school foavo united under tho name of " .Herald and Presbyter." The new paper will be one-fonrth larger than either of the others, and will be much improved. It will be under the immediate-control of Rev. Joseph G. Monfort.'D. D , of the Presbyter, and Rev. Clement E. Rabb, cf the llerahl, assisted by Rav. J. M. Wampler, of the Presbyter, who becomes the associate editor under the new management. The recent mine explosion at Plauen, Saxony, excels, in its aa;regat? of disasters the Avondale horror. At Plauen 27b lives were lost, and there remain 2U0 widows and G3'J children. The work at the Avon laic mines has been resumed, but across the darkened memories of widows nnd orhpac3 the name of Avoodale will long cast a lurid light. A late coirespondent writes of one woman at Avondale, who, looking from her cottage door, beheld the awful doom to which that fire consigned tho husband of her heart, her three sons, three brothers and a father. Eight stroEg men, for any one of whom she would hava gladly risked her own life, were lost to her forever, Pittsburg Commercial.

The Timet gays that tho Spanish have found advantage in a bold display of patriotisrBd uatlooil courage. - They -met ad imagined all'rODt with immediate defiance, though their threatened adversary is ten times more powerful than themselves. 'General Sickles is manifestly alarmed at the result of his proceadiug, and ha reqaestol further instructions. Pending a reply from Washington he desires to withdraw his note. If this is- the actual position of the case, Spain owes it to her own fearlessness, which may savor of unreason, but doe not partake of tho nature of bravado. She has declared that if driven to extremity, she will fight. J&o doubt ehe will; but for her to gain any advantage by doing so is out of the question. As matters stand, she will lose less by war than her adversary. Ameriea may fairly decline an easy victory, on such onerous and partial terms. The people and government j ot Spain are resolved cot to part with Cuba without a straggle. A contest could only result in the' sacrifice of Cuba, coupled with other, but slighter, losses. Sickles expected no such resistance as his njte provoked, and, possibly, in the face of such opposition, his proceedings may be qualified or repudiated by his government. It is believed that be exceeded his au thority, aod America cannot be held responsible tor his acts. London. Sept. 21. The Ritualists. The Standard thinks the loss of Cuba and perhaps Porto Rico, would be the cer tain result ot a war with the United States. Here the mischief for Spain would end, after some months of combat, for she must agree to peace. Bat this mischief would bring with it no corresponding good to., the United States. War would causo a serious interruption of her commerce, and re sult in the wholesale destruction of her shipping. It is not probable that the American Government will interfere any farther in Cuban affairs. Ihe Daily ltleoraph intimates that the declaration of Father Hyacinthe is merely one of the many manifestations revealing the commotion in tho Roman Catholic Church, which promises to make the Ecumenical Council the occasion, of anything but spiritual peace. , London, September 22. The Journal Jes Dtbateslooks upon the religious situation as one farughtwith serious consequences. It is said that the coming Council at Rome will meet only to ratify the decision of a most ultra montane committee, but tho attitude of certain German and American Bishops and the complaints of illustrious French ecclesiastics, shows that the labors of tha Council will not be so C3?y and direet as i was-' anticipated. After the return of the President this morning, and particularly as be spent several hours with Secretary Fish at the Department of State, much anxie ty was expressed as to the character of the conference, the supposition being that it had reterence to our relations with Spain.
