Ou Monday evening, Mr. Lowry discharged a number of his bowlder brigade on account of having no more bowlders, but a boat load arrived unexpectedly yesterday morning, and the workmen were engaged again. The work of bowldcring Loccst Street will bo pushed forward as fast as possible. Not Running. The street cars are not running this week, on account of the track being torn ud in Lamasco by the workmen who are engaged in building the Third Street sewer. It is a great inconvenience to the public, but we must have sewers to carry off the surplus water that cannot be accommodated by the Lamasoo Lakes. CS-IIank Bassett's squad is still still engaged in cleaning sewers. They were trying yesterday to take a big piece of timber, 25 feet long and 10 by 12 inches thick, out of t& branch sewer that runs from the head of Main Street and intersects the Sycamore Street sewer at the corner of Eighth. There are also several large planks in the same sewer, which were carried into the sewer during a heavy rain. Tiie Straight Line Railroad Redivivus. It seemsthat the action of the Couoty Commissioners in refusing to order the election for the purpose of making a donation of 110,000 to this road, has not settled the matter. It is proposed to carry it into the Courts. Mr. Willard Carpenter yesterday called on many citizens for signatures to a petition, asking an appeal to the Circuit Court from the decision of the County Commissioners.
A Splexdid Establishment. We
yesterday looked through the exten sive dry good3 house oi Miller cc Brintmeyer, on First Street, which, by the way, is one of the largest and most popular establishments in this city. The store looks small from the front, but upon entering the illusion is dispelled, and the visitors discover that they are surrounded with a magnificent stock of seasonable dry goods. On the second floor a splen did assortment of carpets are to do found, and the firm are prepared to fill all orders in this line, no matter how large. The business of the house is immense, considering tnat it has been in existence only two years. The number of persons em ployed about the store is fourteen, and they are all kept busy. The sales of the firm last year, ... ;ordIn.r to the returns made to the Hevenue Asses sors, amounted to " over $100,000, which splendid trade has been se cured by gelling good goods at low prices. They buy for cash and sell for cash, which is the proper way to do business. Another great feature of this house, and a new one in th:3 city, is that they keep an .bxpress "Wagon with which to deliver goods at the residences of their customers, free of charge. This is an unusual accommodation, and one which the ladies will not be slow to take advantage of. Such enterprise oa the part of anv firm, as exhibited ly Miller & Brinkmeyer, is truly commendable. S? A large stock of fins Note and Letter Paper for sale at the Journal Office. Good Sale of Tobacco. Martin, Gardner & Co. sold yesterday, at the Blue Warehouse, thirty hogsheads of tobacco. The sale was one of the most satisfactory of the season. The tobacco men were in attenuanco in force, an l a great deal of interest was manifested. The figures are a3 fol lows: Thirteen hogsheads at 10 00 to $10 90; 7 at $9 00 to 19 85; G at $8 00 to $3 C5: 3 at $7 00 to $7 So; 1 at IG C5. and shows that our merchants have lost nono of their eld interest in the market, and are determined that the reputation already attained by this city shall not be allowed to depart, but our market bo made ono of the best in the West. Fifty Cent, Currency. Wc were shown yesterday one of the new issue of fifty cent currency, which is gotten up similar to the other late styles of "fractional." The bill i3 longer than the old fifty cent notes, in fact, too long, to our thinking. It has a good portrait of Abraham Lincoln on the rta-ht end. with a large " 50" in the - ' O w centre. It is green on the back. Home Again. Billy Caldwell, tho Evansville Fenian, returned home yesterday from the East, where ho has been for several weeks, looking for a fino stack of eoods. He also nego tiated for an unlimited supply of Corn-fed Oyster3. Billy will do. Recorder's Court. A light busi ness was done by the Tycoon yester day. John Donovan was "snaled' for being drunk and disorderly. On conviction he was charged $G 25, but as he was out of money, and being Too proud fcr to beg, and too houest to steal, lie was furnished with quarters in Royston'3 Bastl'e. Several other cases were postponed until to-day. EST" Under the head or local no tices will be found a card from Wm, M. This day, September 22d, is the anniver sary of tho promulgation of tho Atuaueipation Proclamation, which was issued by the lamented Abraham Lincoln. To-day is celebrated by tho colored people, who have adopted it a3 their national holiday. It was tne Emancipation Proclamation that tore off the shackles that had previously bound the colored people in this country, and the name of the martyred President will ever remain green in their memories. The procession will march through tho streets, and then proceed to Blackford's Grove, where addresses will bo made. The holiday will end with a festival at Marietta's Hall to night. iJ" Charge Books, very handy for shippers, for sale at the Journal Of fice. Personal. Mr. C. I. Willman, editor of the Mt. Carmel Register, a staunch Republican paper, was in the city yesterday, on a "flyer. We are nleased to learn that ho 13 doing a successful business at Mf. Carmel. Col. Crebs and Judge McDowell, of Carmi, Mr. Townsend and Judge Marshall, of McLeansboro, Col. Casey, of Mt. Vernon, 111., and " Rat" Webb, from tho State at large, arrived in the city last night, to attend the meeting of Railroad Directors this evening. They are stopping at the American. D. L. Phillips, President of the Belleville & Duquoin Railroad, was also expected by last night's train. Splendid Apples. Wc i. 1 f t received yesicruay irom Frinceton one dozen apples, sent to U3 by Mrs. A. J. Calkins. They are splendid specimens of fruit, and are very large. We weighed them out of curiosity, and found that tho dozen weighed exactly ten pounds, which will give our readers some idea of their gre?t size. We return our thanks to the fair donor for her gift. We think these apples would take the premium at any Fair.
The manner in which justice to criminals is carried out is quite expensive at certain times. A case that occurred about twelve years ago, which we give below, is an evidence of our assertion: In 1857, John B. Hall was Sheriff, and that Spring President Buchanan was inaugurated. A man named Thompson was arrested, tried, and convicted, for stealing a turkey worth seventy-five cents. The law was such that the prisoner had to be sent to jail as punishment for his crime, and the county had to feed ' that man for three months at a heavy expense. Justice to the tax-payer would have caused his dismissal, but it could not be so. John II. Scott, the portly news-dealer, acted as jailor for Hall, while the latter went to Washington to see "Old Buck" inaugurated, and, Thompson was ic.'t under tne junaiy care oi Scott. ' Thompson being in jail for a petty crime, was allowed a great many iiDcrties, and among others was permit ted to go out of evenings, a3 he always returned promptly. He wa3 allowed to go to the theatre, and would return to the jail about midnight, and "bang around " outside until he would succeed in waking up Scott, who was a herculean sleeper. Things weot on thi3 way for some lime, until Thompsoa got to putting on so mucn Btyie tnai ocouod jacted, and od.3 night when Thomp son came in drunk and swearing. Scott locked hita up in a cell. This was considered a great outrage by the prisoner, and he swore he would lick" John when he got out. The remark about " licking" made John mad, and he seized an iron bar, un locked the door, and drove Thompson out, with tho threat that if he came back before the return of John P. Hall he would "go for him, pure." . Hall shortly afterwards got tack from Washington, when Thompson immediately complained to him that Scott had driven him out of jail and otherwise imposed on him. Of course Mr. Halt took no notice of Thomp son, but expressed himself well satis fied with Scott's administration of affairs during his absence. Things have changed tinea the above took place. When prisoners get out ot jail now they seldom go back again unless escorted by an offi cer. Meeting ofR.R. Directors Last Night. The Directors of the Evans ville, Carmi & Paducah Railroad held a meeting at the office of the Sccre tary, J. F. Welbora, last night. It was determined by the Directors to call upon this city for a subscription of $300,000 to the stock of the Com--r 1 cs -tt 1 -r..-C? pany. donn 0. iiopKins, ireier cem onin, and Robt. A. Hill, President, wero appointed a committee to agree upon such terms with the City Coun cil as would secure the expenditure of the money in the building of the road It was also decided that they would first survey the most practicable route to Carmi, III., by wayf tho Little Chain; second, that the would sur vey the route to Caiiui by way o Grayville; third, that they would sur vey an air line. Nauseating. The odor that issues from the inlets of tho sewers at the corner of Locust and Eighth Streets and at tho corner of Sycamore and Eighth Streets, is nauseating, and it would seem to us almost uaendurable by those residing in the immediate vicinity. The matter needa the atten tion of the Committee on Sewers, as the smell is enough to create sick nes3. - JPaT The meeting of the railroad gentlemen from Southern Illinois, who come over to this city to confer with the Directors of the Evansville Carmi & Paducah R.aiIroad, in regard to connecting with our road, after it reaches the Wabash River, will be held this evening. Quite a number of prominent gentlemen from Illinois will be present. Cotton and Tobacco. We ac knowledge the receipt, froai Martin Gardner & Uo., 01 this cotton and tctacco circular for the new season It i3 interesting, and we make the fol lowing extracts: Twelve months since we conceived the idea of building up a tobacco market in our city. We began the enterprise alone, but actively aided and assisted by all the leadine wholetale dealers, and many of the retail merchants of the city, and by constant hard work and strict attention to our business making prompt sales and immediate remittances we have secured a business in tobacco unprecedented in establishing a tobacco market, we alone having sold 2,951 hogsheads, out of the 3,700 sold in this market. Our facilities for handling advantageously all cotton that may be entrusted to us, are unsurpassed by any house in our city, and we shall endeavor to make Evansville a market for cotton equal to its tobacco market, which is not excelled in the West. We have an organized Tobacco Board, composed of our leading business men. They, too, will turn their attention to the protection and fosteringof our cotton market. Oar advantages over any other city bslow Louisville, in forwarding cotton and tobacco, are known to the planters and cotton dealers, as also the superiority of our wholesale markets in stocks and prices. From the above, it will be seen that great attention will be given to the sale of cottcn in this city. The statements contained atore are certified to, and the firm recommended, by many of the best wholesale houses aad tobacco dealers in Evansville. With a big cotton and tobacco market, we may reasonably expect for our merchants a heavier trade than ever before enjoyed. Marsh Atkinson, one of the firm referred to above, left yesterday for the cottoa regions, and will be gone some our months, duriug which time, he will do his best to direct a big trade to this city. It is a matter that every merchant is in-
