er Tlie ArrcHt ol C 5. fnuner. The Grand Jury FlRds Two VAP. On Saturday, under the headicg of "A Grave Charge," we mentioned that Mrs. Crowel'Lad been arrested for attempting to roison the wife of one of our well known citizens. Since our article in Saturday's Journal was published, furiher developments have been n:ade, and C. II. Cramer, a boot aud shoe dealer on Main Street, has been arrested for conspiring with Mrs. Crowd to murder his wife by poisoning. We have been at noma pains to ascertain the facts ia this case, but for the present will only publish, a part of our information. We know enough already to show that a iiiorft damning crime was contemplated, which only failed because the wcnuu who wa t carry out the sehemrj. vr;i f;;he to her agreement ;' and encusL evidence has accumulated to rtsrr.p the attempt as truly diabolical. ; : The facts in the case, st'lesst such portion as we deem t rope r to pib!ih, are about as follows: Cramer has, for foir.e two years or more, perhaps, been on tcrs-s of criminal intimacy with Mrs: Louisa Crowel, a German woman, wb.A-s-u character is notorious. ' Cramer, it V? oi:i., peseibly at the- sn? ti n of Mr.-, ('rose',' desired to st rid 'v.-if'?, -ir-Al to. accomplish this ';;'!,., Mr-'. Cro.vel made overtures io Mr -. K,;r, a mid wife, who was to administer poison to Mrs. Cramer. It seems 'that Mrs. C was not sick, but had some supsrstitiou3 ideas, which it was profoed to take advantase of. Mis. Cramer was well aware of her husband's infatuation, for Mrs. Crowel, but f till loved him, and the medicine that she wag to take from Mrs. Ilugcr was to have the suppose-! efi'ect tf tnsking her husband return her !ovc, and renew hi allegiance to " 'his wife. It - was, iu fact, ; to be a "love potfoa.'' List Monday, Mrs. Ituger's concienen smote 'her, and she detcrmiucd to confess 'the hellish deed that wn-i intended to be carried out; to (hat end fhc sent for Sheriff Miller, a:.d when" he met her, she confessed the whole ,4!yl. She said that she wd to get vDO for the murder. After a locg conference together, Sheriff Miller told her not to let on, but to go ahead' as if the scheme was working all riht. Something occurred to arouo the suspicions of Cramer, that Mrs. lluger was not perfectly rafe, and might fail in carrying out the plan, so Mrs. Crowel called on her and told her Cramer was doubtful about the matter, but said to Mrs. 11., " I can trust you; go ahead, an 1 when the deed ia accomplished wc will give you $100." Mrs. lluger, tioccrding to previous arrangement, procured the poison and proceeded to Mrs. Cramer's, and just as she was in the aet r f giving the "potiou," Sheriff Miller stepped out from where he wrs concoaicrl, took tV-.o jnyfrvm "froui licr hands, aud said ."Oh! nj, I uess noU" Mr, llugt r then immediately went before Justice , -McTornaa and made affidavit . against': Mrs. Crowcl, who was arrested and had a preliminary examination, and g;r'o bail in the sum of $1,000 aud was released.; The evidence on the examination of , Mrs. Crowcl, and the statements of. Mrs. lluger, implicated Cramer so much that it was eletcriuiued to arrest him. He was accordingly placed under surveilaucc, and :n affidavit made before the Grand Jury, which body, after summoning and hearing the evidence of a number of witnesses, found two bills against him; one a -a'nsf himself, and the other conjointly again -t him aad Mrs. Crowcl. ' Judge llobiuson fixed Cramer's bail at ? 1,000, and in o fault, thereof he was committed to the county jail. Mrs. Crowd was not to be found ou Saturday or yesterday, and it is presumed that she " skipped out." The a.bove is certainly a peculiar case. Mrs. Crowcl is au o'u woman, and by no manner of means could she bo called good looking; on the contrary, Mrs. Cramer is a woman about thirty eight years old, rather prepossessing, and a very neat and tidy housekeeper. At the time it was supposed Mrs. lluger was administering the poison to Mrs.C. Mrs. Crowcl and Cramer were together, and were found in company by Mr. Miller, and in a situation that wa? almost proof positive of their guilty intimacy. Tako it iu all its bearings, it is one of the most peculiar cases we ever heard or real ef. We have given a pretty full history of the affair not to prejudice the community agamstUramer, but a? so many stories and rumors are afloat, wc think it only proper to let the correct version of the affair be known. Heal Estate Sale. T. M. Eliiatt t dd, cn Saturday, the property own; d by Mr. Newbeny, on the corner of Second and Division Streets. The vacant corner lot, thirty seven and one-half feet front by sixty-nine feet deep, sold for $91 50 per front foot, and wa3 bought by F. 1. Allen. The adjoining lot, same size, with a good frame house on it, was sold to Mr. II. Gumberts for $111 nr The total sale amounted to 7,000. This is considered a good price for the property, and we learn that it was offered at private sale irovious to the sale, for about ?f,0( 0. We learn fro: tho uo-isera Uommittee oi Arrangemoeits fjr the Humboldt Celebration, that arrange ments are progressing favorably. Parent? are' requested not to purchase books, until their children have been to school and learned what books they are required to procure. Those who have not attended the schools heretofore, will call at Prof. Gow's office this morning, and it will also be better for ail such to get -a, certificate from their physiei.iu that they have been properly vaccinated, as i er order cf the Board of Health. Another , thing we would suggest, and that is that all those, intending to go to school the present quarter, should commence promptly at. the beginning, aj it will bo much better to do so, thereby enabling all the scholars to start evenly in their studies Engine No. 3. The Railroad Question. To day has been set apart by the County Commissioners as the occasion on which they will decide whether to ?aiko an order for an election to do nate $110,000 to the Evansviile and Indianapolis Straight Lne Railroad. A great, deal has been srid oa both sides cf the question, cad we presume the minds of the Compaissioners tro fully made up. They have had a disinterested opinion from two of cur ablest lawyers, who have decided that under the law the Commissioners have no right to order the elec tion. Dan Rice's Circus. Dan Rice, the great original, who has given away mere money to charitable and public purposes thau any living showman, will arrive here on Saturday next with his big circus.
