GOOD SEWS FOR ETAXSTItlE. EvansTllle, Henderson & Nashville R. K. meeting at Haduonville.
The Bond to be Tushcd Through to Completion at Once. By reference ta our special di?patch on the first page it will be seen that the meeting of the Stockholders of tha Evansville, Henderson and Nashville Kailroad, at Madisooville yesterday, was largely attended, and that the best of feeling prevailed. 'Alter a fall dif-cu?sioD, a resolution was adopted authorizing the Directors to take such meafnres as they detni best to complete he road. Gen. Boyle will leave at once lor the Las, to close a contract, which it is understood he can readily effect with responsible parties, for its early completion. We congratulate the company and our citizens upon the favorable auspices of this important enterprise, and trust that at an early day we may see the link from Madisonville to Hopkinsville finished, and the cars running through to Nashville. Recorder's Court. The first victim on the " civil list," yesterday, was a man named Suttin, who. had been laboring under physical weakness, brought on by an over-indulgence in what the army surgeons used to call "spirides ferment!" (which the boys were very glad to get hold of after taking heavy doses of " Opi," "Rhei," and MQuinii,") but, which was fermented too much for the weak nerves of the gentleman named above. The Recorder called on him for $5 25. ; The next case for settlement was a family quarrel. Two children had a fuss and the mothers got to quarreling, and then tha fathers followed suit. Fines were assessed on the assaulting parties to the total amount of $11. .These family affair should te kept, out . of the Courts, and although, we withhold the names of all concerned, we believe if the inter ested parties could see the case in the same light as viewed ' by the comma nily, they would be heartily ashamed of themselves, and settle their family disputes in a neighborly way. Under Our " provoke " law in thia State, if One person makes mouths at another he or she is liable to prosecution. Let our s people have more dignity and wisdom.! for it is certainly no Fatis faction to have a person fined a few dollars. , ' ' ' - ihe next case was a big one, at least the person implicated is quite large, but would very likely turn the Scale- at a. trifle under two hundred pounds., Nancy Reid, alias "Nancy Fat," who has before figured in onr police court, was tried on the charge cf keeping a houso of ill-fame. For t wonder especially as (he heat was terrible, and : the Court room . a good place to " raise sweat" Nancy did cot demand a jury, end the case wa3 Beard and decided by Judge Willard himself. . The evidence croved con elusivcly, that Nancy kept a brothel. She was fined $50 and costs. She went to the lock-up, and will probably naofiat corpus or reieagea on a physician's certificate." .. That is the way i( has been done before.- The City Council remits the fine and pays the woman's way out of town to get rid of her, and in three weeks ehe is back again, running another lagnio. We merely allude to these little matters in order that, the City Council may understand how these things are worked up," for the lawyers are "up to snuff," and will often draw very extensively on the "sympathetic" ' feelings of: kind-hearted citizens. . ; ! Since writing the above, in regard to ; Nancy Reid, wc are informed that ste has been released on condition tlat Ehe will. leave town.. ; Humboldt' Celebration. The ! general ,' committee of arrangements for the Humboldt , celebration will meet to-morrow night at the Criminal Court room.' The programme will be revised and made shorter, and other preliminaries will be arranged. We were informed yesterday evening that Rev. Charles Ruack had been selected to deliver the address in German, and that he had accepted the appointment, A large number of strangers will be ia the city, and the railroad and steamboats might do well by carrying excursion parties to attend the celebration at this place. - Effects . ot the Storm. The heavy storm on Monday night caused considerable damage in different parts of the city. ; At the corner of Leet and Centre Streets, the sewer has not sufficient capacity to carry off the water, and it " backed up," overflowing the gutters and streets, and filling several cellars. , Charles. LindenSchmidt's building was again considerably damaged, the cellar having been filled with water, causing the sidewalk and wall to cave in. Mr. Lindenschmidt has had his house damaged several times, and it is very likely that the city will yet have a big bill of damages to pay. ; Jn the nnrnrr of Leet and Third Streets, Jas. Wiltshire has suffered' consideraMo damace. He has a new building i a process of erection, and the walls are partly up to the top of the cellar. The heavySrain caused the dirt on one side to cave into the cellar, and the water poured in so heavily from a gutter that the walls were undermined and gave way. Mr Wiltshire's damage will not be le than $100. tS The cellar of Mr. Knollc, who is also engaged in building a cew house, was filled up with water, and the' foundation of the building somewhat damaged. Commissioners. The County Com missioners yesterday visited the Pi 'geon Creek bridge, and witnessed the laying of the corner stone of the west pier at the Salt Well bridge.
The Wear and Tear of Cur
rency. It has been estimated as far a3 it is possible to do so without exact data, that the total amount of currerjev annually destroyed in the course ' of circulation, is more than sufficient to entirely u-nu-j j humuj and issuing it from the Treasury. The loss of small fractional currency is trreater than that of the larger denominations, and the loss of currency greater than that of the legal tender notes issued, but the entire aggregate is more than sufficient to defray the cost of piintingand putting both the currency and le,ial-teaders in circulation. The American people, as a rule, are careless of small cuirency. How maty fives, tens, and even quarters, are l' st by an individual in the course of a month, each of the losers can probably toll if he or she takes cote of small things. Make this the basis of a calculation and determine how many stamps are lost by the entire community in the course of a year, and the aggregate will be found to be enormous. The loss of currency benefits the Government, and through it the peo pie, and every penny of fractional currency or every dollar of legaltender which is lost in circulation, ? is so much gain to the Government, because there is so much less to be re-, deemed. A Curious Case. John Inglehearf, aged about five years, whose father is engineer at Bloomer Hoing'a factory, wa3 knocked down by another boy, some three weeks ago, and in falling Struck the lower part of hia forehead against a log. Nothing was thought of it at the time, but during the last week he has lost the entire sight of one eye, and Epeaks in such an inarticulate way that ha cannot be under stood. Before the accident, he spoke distinctly. His physician ibinks there has been a slow form of inflammation going cn at the base of the brain ever since the injury: hence the defective vision and speech. He i3 under the care of Dr. Mageniss. , ' t . . ; Personal. W. C. Bantiu, an at, tachco of the United States Revenue Department, of Paducab, was in the city yesterday. , 1 Goodlette Morgan and i.W. A man by the name of Henry Slim was arraigned on the ch"arge;of having stolen a gold locket from Louisa Mabel. The case was dismissed by the Prosecutiog Attorney, and will probably come up in the Criminal Court. Henry Bayer sued out a peace warrant against John Emrich, but after the case was taken up, the matter was compromised, Emrich paying the costs. . ,' ' . Moss Agates. Moss a-jites, popularly supposed to contain specimens of real moss, but which are simply silicious formations penetrated by iron solutions taking the form of mosses, vines trees, etc., arc found aloDg the Union Paeific Road, at points for two hundred miles from Cheyenne westward. The blue and cream agates are the most highly prized. Dr. Floyd Stinson, at the Library Rooms, has a very fine cream agate in his collection of geological specimens, and it is well worth looking at.
Pay of theCity Police. Oa last
j Monday night the city police present ed a petition to the City Council asking that their pay bo increased from $2 to $2 50 per day (or night). The petition was laid over one week for future action. After giving the matter considerable thought we are of the opinion that the increase asked for is nothing more than right. Two dollars per day in city orders is not very much, as the orders are generally shaved ten per cent, for cash. A policeman at present gets $14 per week, Sunday included, with his fees, which are very small; in fact, will not begin to make up the ten percent, discount in ti e city ordeis. The force is not very lari.e, and the increased expense will not be very great.. . Some parsons have said if the pay of the police is increased, it will also be necessary to increase the pay of the street hands and other employees of the cit'. But we do not so regard it. Any man almost can work on the streets, but any man cannot be a policeman. We ought to pay enough to be able to secure the services of good men men of nerve, promptness of decision, and energetic and at the low salary at present paid, it is Lard to secure the services of the kind of men desired. A policemen has to rirk his life in the discharge of his duty, hks to go at all times, and their duties are entirely different and more arduous than any other class of the city's employees. We are satisfied the Council will do what is right in the premise?. Died. At Fort Madison, Lee County, Iowa, August 4th, 1SG9, Catherine Gertrude, wife of Philip Viele. ; . , v , . A jour.g man named Maiquell Knight had the little finger of his left hand completely torn to pieces, yesterday evening, by getting it caught in a cog-wheel. Dr. F Scheller dressed the wound, and had to cut off the finger. The accident occurred at Uhlhorn & Brinkman' marble yard. ' ;; . li ; Queer.
