We eall attention to the local notice of life insurance paid to Mrs.MargaretteKenk.by the Germania Life Insurance Company, of New York, through Mr. S.J. Loewenstein, the agent in this city. This is a reliable Company, and pays losses promptly. The Cause. The Princeton Clarion says that a jo?f mortem examination was held on the body of Mrs. KiDg, who died so suddenly on last Sabbath in that city. The physicians certify that her death was caused by congestion of the lungs. Concert at Princeton. Tha choir of the old school Presbyterian Church, at Princeton, will give a grand concert on next Thursday evening, August 19, under the direction of liss Amelia Lawrence, of this city. The proceeds of the concert will be applied to the buildiog of a church larsonage ' Bridges to be Bcilt. The County Commissioners have located three . -wooden bridges, as follows: One across the " Frenchman's Slough," near the Greathouse farm, in Union Township; one across the Bayou, near the Shook farm, on the line dividing Perry and Union Townships;' and one on the 3IouDt Vernon road, across Saunders' run. The contracts for building the above arc to be let on the 21st of this 3nomh. Death op an Old Resident. In another place we announce the funer al notics of Mrs. Ruth A. Stinson, wife of Iter. Benoni Stinson, at the age of seventy years. Mrs. Stinson has lived in th"i3 city about fifty years, and is known by almost every old resident. Sho witnessed the growth of Evansville from a dense wilderness to a city of nearly thirty-five thousand inhabitants. Her life has been a use ful one, and she wa3 beloved by all who knew her. She died happy in the Christian iaith, caving tor many years been a worthy member of the Baptist Church. Grand Lodge I. O. O. P. effect that in addition to the recent gTeat eclipse, and the- approach of the comet, we are, in a few years, to have anotLer sensation, which is nothing 1 more nor less than a transit of Venus across the can's disc. It ia periodica!, bat the periods are unequal. The first of them, during the present century, will take place in a few years, and will be visible wherever the sun is. It is an eclipse, also, in a certain way, for Venus gets between the earth and th- sun, but being so far away from the earth, it intercepts less of the sun's light than if it were close to our planet. Astronomers regard this transit as only second in importance to a total eclipse. The present is an age of celestial wonderB. Personal. "We had the pleasure of a call from Cha3. II. Wood, general passenger agent of the celebrated Pan Handle Railroad, on Wednesday. He 11. . m 19 an excellent representative ox a first-class railroad. , John Alsop,, representing the wellknow firm of Peters, Powers & Cooper, Louisville, passed down the river yes terday. ' We neglected to mention, yesterday. the return to the city of Rev. C. B. H Martin, Pastor of the Old School (Vine Street) Presbyterian Church, from a recuperative excursion with his family to the country, and we are pleased to see him looking vigorous and greatly improved in health. He will resume his regular duties on Sun day next. ' ' A Foolish Habit. We saw yesterday the effects of, the foolish butvery prevalent habit of tying the lines of horses attached to vehicles, to the wheel. A horse so fastened commenced backing until the linea became taut, when hi3 retrograde movement became 'so accelerated that he was thrown from his feet, and in his fall the shafts of the wagon were broken. The horse was, with difficulty, relieved from his unpleasant condition. This is a " custom that would be moro honored in the breach than ia the observance." . Watches, Clocks, &c. We direct especial attention to the card of G. II. Jageman. He has a fine stock of watches, clocks, jewelry, silverware, which he sells on very liberal terms. " Gus." is a tip-top workman, and an exceedingly clever gentleman, and we commend him cordially to all who desire anything in his line. His place of business is No. 35 Main Street, between First and Second.' Give him a call, and he will auityou. . . Gone to Caseyville. Prof. Wm. Buck, the distinguished watchmaker and musician, has gone to Caseyville, Ky., to organize and instruct a new band, and ad interim working at his trade as a watchmaker and jeweler. Prof. Buck has been exceedingly successful as a musical instructor, and the young men of Caseyville are fortunate in securing his services. Social Picnic We are indebted to the managers for an invitation to a social picnic, to be given by Union Township, in Watts Grove, opposite Henderson, on Thursday, August 19. The Evansville Silver Band and Pfafflin's String Band will fdrnish music for the occasion, which promises to be one of peculiar interest and pleasure. We shall refer to the matter again. - - Fine Potatoes. We are indebted to Mr. Julius Catlettfor a sample of the finest Irish potatoes we ever beheld. He calls them the Shaker Russett. They are very large, and are unusually sound. Our . farmers ought to planttbem extensively. Fine ArrLEs. Esquire Vac, of Knight Township, left a sample of apples at this office yesterday, 'which cannot easily be excelled, either in size or flavor. Such specimens show what can be done in the fruit line in Vanderburgh County, if our farmers would only devote the proper atten tion to it. Arrest or Henning. It will be remembered by our readers that. sometime since. William' Ilenninir. District Prosecuting Attorney, sud denly disappeared, on account of certain transactions in this county while in the discharge of his official dutiesr Where he has been in the 'meantime is not known: but on yesterday he made his re-appearancc in this city, and was promptly arrested by Deputy Sheriff James Fitzwilliams.' Henning was held to bail in the sum of $700 by Judge Robinson, and Judge Parrett and Gen. Shackelford went on. his bond, they having been employed to defend him. The trial of Hennisg's case is set lor Monday week, in the Criminal Court. We refrain from any further comments until After the trial. Base Ball. The base ball fever seems to nave Droicen out airesn m this city lately, and a number of gentlemen met at Dr. Thompson's office last night for the purpose of organizing a new club. The following agreement was entered iuto by those present: We, the undersigned, with a view of fostering our national game, and encouraging proper physical exercise among the young men of our city, hereby agree to form the Union Base Ball Club of Evansville, to be governed in all particulars by the rules as adopted from time to timQ by tne National Base Ball Association Signed by S. W. Thompson John Nurre, C. H. Wentz, J. H. Best, J. L. Roach, ft. B. Morgan, Daniel Nugent, George Kollcnbcrg, E. G. Van Riper, Ed. Lefon, E. Hathaway, John A. Ilealy. The new club will hold a meeting at the ofiico of Dr. Thompson on to morrow evening at 7i o'clock, for the purpose of electing officers. All those wishing to take part with the club are cordially invited to be present.
The Circus To-Dat. George W.
Dellaven's colossal circus will make its grand entree this morning in our city. Two perfc -dances only will be given one thi? afternoon, and tne other have ift.niffht. Jjenaven is saia 10 a splendid show, and wherever he has exhibited the papers invaria bly speak well of him after his departure. In addition to a full and complete circus company of trained acrobats,' gymnasts, riders, etc., headed by three excellent clowns. there 13 ' also the celebrated troupe of performing dogs and mon keys, trained by the Hanlor Brothers. These trained animals are pronounced one of the best vow3 ever presented to the American public, and are worth a visit from both old and y une. Of course, the children will be delighted to see them. OM Sam. Lathrop, the veteran clown, il be on hand; also Mr. "Wallace, the famous jester, one of the rising wits of the age. There is also the .Bedouin Arab Troupe. We feel sure that no' better circus has visited this city for a long while, and we feel ( confident of a big crowd at both performances. Fun is the password. The Abortion Case. A day or two since we published an account of the arrest of a man -at Princeton for being implicated in an abortion case. The specific charge against him in the complaint is for selling or giving medicines for the purpose of procuring an abortion.' The accused waived an examination, and gave bail in the sum of $300, to answer at the Common Pleas Court, which meets next week, Judge Morris S. Johnson,' presiding. ; Watermelons and Colio. In about every sixth negro hovel in the city, a darkey, young, old, or middle aged, can be heard groaning and yelling while passing through the perils of cramp colio. The reason ,ia, 'that since watermelons, large enough for a family of a half dozen, can be bought for ten and 1 fifteen cents apiece, a good portion of the colored population subsist upon nothing else. A watermelon breakfast, despite the aches and pains it is sure to bring, is a luxury that a great many colored people have not the will to forego. ' Humboldt .Centennial. The general committees had a meeting at the Criminal Court j$om, last night. Dr. Legler was arointed to deliver the welcome acH .sa in German, and J. Gill Shankf : the welcome address in English, 0 evening of the 13th of September 'pd Judge Parrett will deliver the Ration in English. The committee have not yet selected any person to dliver the oration in German in place of Mr. Tomhemelt, who had to decline. Artesian Strings Park. Tho concert at the Artesian Springs Park last night, was not very well attended, and the crowd was quite small. The grounds were beautifully illuminated, and the Cornet Band ' discoursed some very nice music. The Zirconia light was on exhibition in all its brilliancy. We were surprised that more people were not in attendenco. Colonel Wehler did all in his power to add to the comfort and pleasure of his guests. The Corn. A gentleman who has, within the past two weeks, passed through the counties of Gibson and Posey, in Indiana, and White and Edwards, in Illinois, reports the corn crop to be poor in the various sections of country visited by him. Hundreds of acres, ho says, are almost withered, owing to the heavy rains. followed by a sudden drouth. He states that, the farmers complain bitterly of the poor prospects, and the orop will ba very light. A Noose Item. We clip the following from the New York Herald of Monday last: ' . Married A the St. Nicholas Hotel, New York, on Sunday, Aug. 8, by Rev. Richs.rd Parker. A. II. Cardin, Esq., of . Crittenden County, Ky., to Mrs. Mary A. Sutcliff, of the same place. No cards. We congratulate our young friend Cardin on his good fortune, and hope that he and his fair bride may find life's paths pleasant, plentiful and peaceful. Gone to Sr. Louis. Prof. Valentine Schriber, the noted violinist, who has been in this city for some time past, left for St. Louis last Monday, having accepted an engagement in the orchestra of Ben DeBar's theatre, as second leader. Mr. Schriber is a fine musician, and we regret to lose him from our midst. ; Hebrew Fair. The Hebrew ladies in this city are getting up a grand fair to commence on the even:g of August 30th. "We shall speak at greater length shortly in regard to it. Recorder's Coubt. Chas. Piskle, for being dead drunk, was fined $525, which he paid. " A short horse ia soon curried," and a short story is soon told. Lost a Finger. A man, employed at Dannettell & Kroeger's stone works, got his little finger caught in a cog wheel, yesterday, and it was mashed so badly it had to be amputated. Another finger was badly mangled also. Beautiful Flowers. We are indebted to Mr. G. W. Newitt, the popular florist, on First Avenue, beyond Eleventh Street, for a magnificent bouquet, composed of the rarest flowers, arranged with excellent taste and superlative skill. . Whenever i find a real handsum woman engaged in the "wimmins' rights bizziness," then i am going to take mi hat under mi arm and jine the procession. Josh Billings. And whenever Josh "jinesin," he will have plenty of company from Evansville-
The Official Vote. The County Board of Canvassers, for " the'speetal election on the fifth of this month, to decide whether Vanderburgh County would donate $212,000 to the Evansville, Carmi and Paducah Railroad met at the Court House yesterday to count the official returns. Union and U atre Townships were thrown outt "1 cause their papers were not certified to, and no representatives were present from those precincts. The following is "tie vote: APPUvPRI -.t;ox

The vote of the Townships thrown out is as follows: For. Ayainst. Union Township..Centre Township.... .13 13i 8 Total.. . IS Mr. Potts moved that Precinct No. 1, Pigeon Township, be thrown out, because the certificate was not signed on the day of the election. Azro Dyer and Col. Butterfield gave as their opinion that the. Board could not go behind the record. The papers were before the Board in proper form, and that was all Tthat was necessary On the vote being taken, Mr. Pott's motion was lost. From the above figures, it will he noticed that" the out Townsips voted almost unanimously against the donation, for the reason, we suppose, that the people living in those Townships do not want their land to increase in value, becauso the richer they are the more ;taxe3 they will , have . to pay, which is very hard 5 to be sure. Bat of coarse, it cannot be helped now, for the donation has been voted by an overwhelming majority. To-DAT.--Let every lover of fun remember Dellaven's Circus to day.
