i:io mailer. ijul wnea ccitntiSc men ana lyzing the ultimate organization of material substances; tracing the intricate processes of thought in the brain; descending into the bowels of the earth and recording the successive geologic epochs and describing the forms of life which existed ages ago. but are now extinct; sending the electro-magnetic fluid under oceans and over continents with the speed of thought to the " uttermost parts of the earth;" and soaring on the wings of science and art into the illimitable realms of space, demonstrating ex actly the time of an eclipse and the places where visible, or the appear ance of a comet or meteeiio shower, decades before these events are to oc cur every candid person" must admit that tho . human intellect is an emanation of Divinity, and that " The soul, Immortal as Its Sire, liuall never die." This, with the certainty that an all-wise, Supreme Being created and regulates all things, constitutes the lesson we learn from the Eelipse. And now let U3 depict this inspiring event ia plain language, for the inform ation of scientific men and the satis faction of persons who did not wit ness the phase of total obscuration. Evausville is situated in latitude 33, S North; lonjtitude 87, 29', West from Greenwich. The time stated for the beginning of the eclipse here was 4 hours, 17 minutes, after noon; ending of tho eclipse 6 hours, 15 minutes; total duration 1 hour, 53 minutes; commencement of total phase 5 hoars, 17 minutes, 2 seconds; duration 2 minutes. Allowing for variations in time-pieoes, refraction of light, and the difficulty of ascertain ing these respective phases without the aid of elaborate instruments, the actual time corresponded remarkably with the pre-calculated time. The sky was cloudless, except that a few specks of vapor showed faintly in the sky. The air was clear and transparent, and cool in the shade. The sun, previous to the eclipse, shone with considerable warmth, but a slight breeze and the moisture of a late rain modified its heat, which is usually intense at this season. The writer observed the eclipse from a porch facing the West. , When the eclipse began, the heat therein was such as to cause u person dressed in linen to perspire. As the obscuration in creased, the air became cooler by , degrees until, at the pe riod of totality, a chill was felt, and linen became uncomfortable. The change of temperature occurred as sud denly and was as extreme as when a violent storm of wind and Tain comes in a hot day. The writer was not sup plied with a thermometor, but where he was, exposed to the full force of the Sun, the decrease of temperature was fully twenty degrees. After the eclipse passed off there w&a a chill in the air unusual in August, and the ensuing night nnd next day were also remark ably cool. The transitions of light and shade and variations of color, were extraor dinary and astonishing. As the phase of obscurity approached, the sky changed in color from a light blue to a dark blue,' then to a leaden color. The hues varied, being darker toward the zenith and lighter toward the horizon and nearer the Sun. At the period of totality, when the earth around us was obscured in shadow tho horizon from the south to the north around by the west was lighted by the Sun's rays shining from behind the moon, as the horizon on a clear morning and evening is illuminated before the rising and after the setting the Sun. Tho eolar light faded gradu ally a3 the moo a crossed the sun's disc until the latter disappeared, when in an instant the light vanished as sud decly as when a dark cloud hides the face of the Sun. The darkness re semblcd that which prevails of a night when the moon is about in its quarter phase, but at first seemed deeper on account of the sudden change. The light flashed instantineously on the landscape when ; the Bun s face re appeared at its northwestern edge, an grew gradually brighter until the re appearance of the entire sun's disc, The moon appeared as a huge black globe standing out in relief against 1 . - . 1 wn.t . 1. .nnvnnr Ab the eclipse progressed the "face ot nature " and the countenances 0 individuals assumed a livid, sickly pallor, with a greenish-yellow tinge The sights and sounds were ominous the scene awe-inspiring. People looked at cacn other almost speeck less with wonder. The sudden trans ition from comparative light to the darkness of an ordinary night was startling. Few or none expected the shadow to come so instantaneously. The quick re-appearance of the light wai equally unexpected and surprising. The exclamation of the author of "Paradise Lost" "Haii, holy Light, offspring of Heaven," sprang to the lips to give expression to one's feelings.

must have daring a light bursting fcrth from cur great luminary on such an occasion, and flashing out as if from the circle of the moon, is certainly suggestive of such an exercise cf the artistic imagi nation. The color of the balls of light, and the corona or circle of light, was white with a faint reddish tinge, and they seemed, to flash as if eorrposed of a flaming, fiery substance. . Tho appearance wa3 not that of an incan descent or glowing body. The balls of light resembled in vividness a calcium or zirconia Fgat. The corona was not a mere dull circle of light, but was brilliant, almost dazzling., . Ia relation to the movements of animals and birds, as tho eclipse came on, they acted, so far as the writer could observe them, like they do on the approach of night. Cows grazing in the woods above the city started homeward, swallows fluttered in . the air and descended into chimneys, and pigeons .went to their nests. After the eclipse passed off the latter flew about again, and the former checked their; homeward course. A friend informs the, writer .that his chickens went to roost, and after the eclipse loft their perches. Children playing in the streets ran home af frighted. Few stars were visible,' and they. were planets. The light of the sun, though intercepted on its passage to the earth, was so bright in the heav.1- .v n li ens as to outsaine tne leeeie ngut 01 tho fixed stars, except, perhaps, in the far eastern horizon. Few of us will ever behold the like of this sublime event again. We have been fortunate in living within its pathway. Its wonders will ever linger in our memory. Middle aged adults will be in their graves, children will be men and women grown, before the United States sees such another flight. To the Police. "Runaways are of almost daily occurrence in this city, and when an affrighted team gets started on its wild "career" there is great danger of persons : bHBg run over, especially children. The cause of most of the runaways is that teams are left standing in the streets with out being unhitched. There is a cl!y ordinance against this, .and if the police would make it a rule to arrest all those who violate the ordinance; it would have a . wholesome effect, cna lessen thenumber of dangerous runaways that occur in tlu3 city. . If the police and City Marshal will give this matter their serious attention for a while, we feel sure that we shall have fewer occasions to write up " fearful runaways." ... . y Went to Vin censes. Dr. II. W. Cloud, II. M. Preston, C. C. Bruner, Ed. J e nkins and C. W. Summers went to Vincennes on Saturday, to see the eclipse, that city having been advertised as being within 'the central point. They got on a high, knob, about a mile' and. a half from Vincennes, and say the view was splendid. It is a matter of grave doubt whether the show was not as good here, and the only particular difference in favor of Vincennes was that the total eclipse lasted 13 " seconds longer than here. The friends of the gentlemen endeavored to get the joke on them, for going 52 mi!e3 to sec a Bhow that was no better than the one given here. The party claim, however, that they were fully satisfied with the exhibition, which may have been good, but we are not prepared to admit the claims ef any other point over our city. Another Celestial Exhibition Comisg. For years past astronomers have foretold that during the months of J aly, August, and September, , in the present year, one of the most wonderful comets the world has, ever known, would make its reappearance. The New Albany Commercial asserts that the Celestial visitor " is on time, and can be seen with the naked eye any clear night, in the northern part of the heavens, between eleven . and twelve o'clock, and from that time until the morning star rises. The astronomers also assert that this comet will approach nearer this mundane globe than any previous longtailed visitor, except Celestials, that come from China. We hope some of our citizens that keep late hours will use their visionary organs, and if they have ocular demonstrations of the presence of the fiery strarger, we should be phased to knew it.
