In the';telegraph ', news yesterday morning, ia relation to the fire at Philadelphia, it was stated that the Republic Insurance Company of Illinois had policies amounting to $330,000. Mr. Hallock telegraphed to Cincinnati and Indianapolis yesterday, and learned that the amount given in thoso cities was $38,000, making a great difference, as bo great a loss would affect tho stability of any ordinary insurance company. The comparative health of this city and Evansville is proven by the mortuary statements tor the month of July. There were eighteen deaths ia Terre Haute to fifty-four in Evansville, showing a ratio of one to three. Terre Haute Express. As the population of Terre Haute is only a little more than half that of Evansville, wo don't see a3 the difference is so very great. Evansville is a very healthy city for her size, and fifty-fjur deaths in one month is un unusually large report.

Billy got into a similar scrape on Thursday, and got knocked down, but he afterwards returned the compliment on his antagonist.

The Ecllpss To-Eay. ' ,;?:? We presume onrjeaders will be on the lookout to-day for lhej'great eclipse. On our Eecond page we .print an article by Colonel Carrinqtos, of the United States Army; which is, so far as we know, both learned and scientific. Prof. Tingley, of Asury University, tells us whrt we must look for, as follows: f During the total eclipse, attention should be given to the following phenomena: j 1. The corona, its ; extent-acd-boundary. . - - . ,1 Ai'.'.J2. The rcsc colored protuberances, their form and position. ,ti J j, 3. Their changes tf size form," or Color. . i . " Vl - W .J ; ; 4. "Y hether any s'ars become visible, and their color. .1.. - Immediately before and after the total obscuration, look for v -. - , 1. Xhelormaticn ot Bailey s beaas, the apparent breaking up of. the narrow crescent into fragments. 2. The approach of the moon's shadow (from the northwest)1 as seen by the rapid darkening ef the landscape. - This phenomena can te observed satisfactorily only - from I the summits of hills or from the tops cf high buildings, affording an extended landscape. , ... . 3. The flight of the shadow" towards the southeast immediately,, after,, the total eclipse. i 4. The reappearance of Bailey's heads. " ' 5. Flashes of light j"ust as the sun disappears'and again as it reappears or just before. ? " During the ichole progress cf the eclipse, observe ; . 1. The fading of the light, the color of the sky, clouds and landscape. 2. Peculiar appearances of tie moon and that portion of the sua immediately bordering upon the moon. 3. Meteorological phenomena: The temperature of tho atmosphere, the force and diieetion of the winds, the amount of the clouds and the-direc tion cf their motion. 4. Tho effect of the eclipse upon animals, birds, flowers. &c. For some of these observations, a SDy-gla3s willj be found serviceable, if mounted upon a nxed support, and used with colored or smoked glass screens interposed until total obscura tion. During the total eclipse, of course the screens will ba worse than useless, either with or without the telescope. In order: to make the above observations as valuable to sci ence m possible, there should te a division of labor, and an understandi g among the observers as to what particular duties they will b3 expected to perform.
