For an election day yesterday was decidedly dalL- Nothing of unusual interest transpired, and we did not hear of a single arrest. Returned. Mr. Rowlson, the famous cutter, returned from New York, on Wednesday, and can be found at M. Lyon's fashionable clothing house. Tobacco Sale. Martin, Gardner & Co. will sell to-day about twentyfive hogsheads of tobacco. The sale will commence at 10 o'clock A.M. A fall attendance of buyers is requested. Ukusual. The Terre Haute Express of yesterday did not contain a -single sensational item. One day in that city without a robbery, murder, or suicide, is something unusual. Delightful Music. The Cornet Band stopped in front of the Journal Office yesterday afternoon and played " Up in a Balloon " in splendid style. We shall be glad to hear them ajain. ; Bid Time. From Express Messenger George W. Hill wo learn that the down train yesterday morning carried about five hundred negroes on an excursion trip from Terre Haute to Vincenne?, where soma kind of a celebration was" held. Cami' T'Ieetixci. We are informed that the Spencer County camp meeting will be held near Grandview, this month, and will commence on the 19th day of August. It is expected that a large number of people will be in attendance. Smoke Your Glas3. We advise all persons intending to take observations of tho great eclipse to-morrow, to smoke their glass in good time, and be prepared for the great phenomenon. Tho eclipse will last one hour and fifty-eight minutes. Before Justice Emery. Only one case was heard before His Honor, yesterday. The case was a mixed one, and was about an affair in which there was too much baby and not enough matrimony. The parties were colored. The father of the child was directed to pay $1 50 per week for the support of tho infant. Narrow Escape. A child of Mr. ctroebel, tho baser, who lives on First Street, while sick and delirious, on Wednesday night, fell from a Bee ond story window upon a roof, and from theaco to tho ground, without sustaining any injuries. A singular accident, and a wonderful escape. ' Chakcie of Base. Mrs. A. An alarm of. fire was sounded at a quarter past nice o'clock last night, but fortunately, tuf;ro was no tire. Villainous. By the Spencer County JournaiwQ learn that some scoundrel gained access to the County Auditor and Treasurer'3 offices, and erad and changed figures, altering amoxrnts very seriously thereby, and committed other depredations. The latest return wo had from Perry Township ia the afternoon, gave 103 against the donation, and 25 in favor. In Union the vote was reported 100, with a considerable majority against the donation. Of one thing wo can rest assured, and that is, the appropriation has been carried by a hacdsonio majority. Cheap Freights. We understand that the' various competing freight lines from the East had cut down freight on all classes to fifty cents per one hundred pounds. Special rates were made as low as forty-five cents. This is cheap enough, in all conscience, and v. ere there fifty railroads running Ea?r, could not be reduced arjy lower. Envelopes. The Journal Office is headquarters for envelopes. If you want a gocd article, cheap, you can find just what you want by calling at No. G Locust. Recorder's Courl-vIo the ab senca of Judge Willard, the Recorder's Court has atout played out. No cases are tried, the police get no fees, Castle Royston i3 about empty, and the City Treasury is getting low. We believe the only inmate of the Bastile is Habeas Corpus Kate, who is staying out her time for having been on a big drunk. The habeas coapus seems to have" run out,' for Kate is left to pine in "ber loneliness. ; 1 HE ( X IIEATRICAL SEASON. 17 S letter from New York city, from Mr Duffield, we learn that he will be con nected , with , the .Louisville Upsra House the ecmiog season,: and has already secured many first-class stars. among whom are Jo Jefferson, Edwin Forrest, Lydia Thompson's Burlcsquo Troupe, John E. Owens, Mis. Scott Siddens, Ada Webb, M. W. Lefingwell, Morlaechi Ballet Troupe, Mr. D. P. Bowers, J. ; C. 'McCollen, Richey's Opera Troupe, and Grau's Opera Troupe.' If cur citizens would only give assurance that Mr. DufSeld would be supported, we could have any or all of the above stars and conv binations brought to our Opera House If Mr. Duffeld is only guaranteed s fair support, he will give us some firstclass dramatic entertainments. lie is a good, manager, and it would bo well if our citizens could make some arrangements to get him to bring a good company here. - We hope our beautiful and spacious Opera House will not lie idle all tho coming Fall and Winter. -, ' V ' A Case of Distress Relieved. A lady arrived in this city the; first part cf this week from New York en route to Roekport, Ind. She wa9 in a destitute condition, and took the eteamcr Hartford ;to, Roekport, on Green River, thicking Green River was the dividing . line . between : Kentucky and Indiana. .Learning" her mistake, she was brought back to the city again by Capt. McReynolds, who would not take any pay,' although the lady had a little rnoney with her. She then tried to raise some money to take her to Roekport, and applied to the Mayor, who referred her to Mr. Hedderich, tho Township . Trustee, : who gave her deck passage (which was all he could do) for herself and children, but she could no travel in that way. She was finally referred to the President of tho Christian Commission in this city, who .furnished her with money, and proposed to pay her fare on the Morning Star, but Captain Gilmore would not take any pay for the passage of herself ct children. The lady has friends at Roekport, and re this is, we hope, in comfortablo cir cumstances. "' Tee Muffins. The return game of baso ball muffin variety will be played to-day, between the opposing clubs, led by Ed. E. Wheeler, Jr., and II. S. Quackenbush. The game will be played at the grounds of the Evansvillo club, and rare fun may be anticipated. The play, will begin at 3 o'clock precisely. Wo learn that a few leather medals have been struck to be given -to the bsst "muffins." We believo that " crossing out " will not bo attempted in the gamo to-day. Personal. Dr. W. D. Thomas, for fifteen years pst a resident of Rockville, Indiana, has recently located in our city, and tenders his pro fessional services. He comes highly recommended. His card will be found elsewhere. ' 'm ; Pcst-Office Business. The total number of letters mailed at the postoffice in this city during the month of July was 40,492. At only three cents for each letter this would give an aggregate cf $1,214 7G. The month of July U the dullest in the year generally, and the number of letters mailed in other months will far exceed the above. Bills of Lading, ;n Books and loose, in any quantity, cn hand at tho Journal Office. Captain Dexter's New Boat. Captain H. T. Dexter arrived from Pittsburg yesterday at noon, and from him we learn that he ha3 contracted for a fine, new side-wheel steamboat wnica id 10 ue duui at i lctsourg. ihe cabin, hull and machinery has been contracted for, and the new boat will cost between forty and forty-five thousand dollars.
Eallroaa Election inertia.
SV XG VI CTORY. Tho election in the city went off quietly yesterday. Tho friends of both sides taose in favor or the danation and those opposed to the same worked with a wui, and the result was that a much larger vote wa3 polled than was anticipated. The friends of the road to Southern Illi nois had the Evansville Cornet and the Crescent City Silver Bands en gaged, and they were out in their wagons, in which had been risked ur paintings showing a train of csrs cn the Carmi and St. Louis Ruad, and tho Carmi locomotive butting the Straight Line bull off the trask. The city was unusually orderly considering that all the saloon3 were open. The bands traveled through the city awaking the echoes with tho concord of sweet sounds, and the paople seemed perfectly enthused on the railroal question. By four o'clock in the evening the opponents of the- Cirmi Road gave up the election as lost, and threats of "injunction" were freely made. The election yesterday demonstrated that our citizens were fully alive to the best interests of the city, and that we want trade from everywhere we can get it. To all who voted fer the donation, wc say "well done.' In another place wc give the full vote in the city. We kept our forms open until a late hour for returns from tho out townships, but only heard from one officially. A Huge Swindle. Our attention has been called to a swindling circular, issued from a house in New York, proposing to sell counterfeit money. Thia circular was received in this city by a young lady, and we make a few extracts, to show the purport of the circular: New York, I860. My Dear Sir: We have in our possession a large stock of exact copies of the genuine United States Treasury Notes (executed by the most skilled men in the art outside of fhe States' Prison), which wo desire to immediately dispose of on the following very liberal terms, viz.: , Paekazes representing $ too ..Sl CO " 5K... " " l.CtO... " " 2.C0O... SO CJ &J 00 t 00 And so on, for every package thereafter. If you order a 50 package, we will sell to no one else in your vicinity or town, thereby giviDg you the exclusive right to circulate or appoint agents to do so, in a town. 1' or a county right, you must oraer an $80 package. The circular then goes on to tell how mcney is to be sent, but, in our opinion when money is Eent by mail, no return will ev;r be made. ; The circular winds up as follows: P. S. We place reliance in you, so far as offering this opportunity, and confide in your ability to keep the whole thins a profound secret. These notes, by tho knowing ones, are pro nounced perfect copies ot the genuine, and we claim the right to make our own terms in disposing of them. If we sent samples, it would make our business much too public, as disinter ested parlies would 6end for such; therefore, in .lustica to ourselves, we positively refuse to send samples, or sell in any less quantities than above stated to any one or on any other terms. Rulers, Pen Racks, Letter and Bill Head Boxes Office. at the Journal The Circus. What a world of thought is produced by that word the " Circus." How many youngsters rack their brains to discover seme means to raise a quarter; and how many old folks resolve to go and see the acting and laugh at the funny jokes and soces of the clowns. The big bills are up in the city, anrfounc ing that T?e Haven's Combination Circus and trained animals not Hons, elephants. &c. but a big troupe of performing dogs and monkeys, taught by the renowned IIanloi Brothers will open in this city on next Friday, the 13th of this month, and a big advertisement in the Journal givc3 the same information. This troupe is pronounced one of the very best now traveling. It is not worth while for us to specify the various features ot the show; all these can be learned from the advertisement. The great circus will be here cnly one day, and give two performances, and will, perhaps, be the last ono that will visit ua this Summer. Old Sam. Lathrop is with the Company, and he is assisted in the ring by two young and brilliant clowns, who have won names and fame by their witticisms and jests. Remember this day week, and ell go to the big show. Religious Debate. We learn that a religious debate took place at Oak Station last week, between a Campbellitc preacher, named Ward, and the Rev. S. Bowers, Methodist, from Vincenncs. The debate was on five doctrinal points, embraced in the Campbcllite and Methodist doctrine. The decision of the audience, consisting of both denominations, was that Mr. Bowers mai-j'.mueh the best arguments in the dehatc, and triumphed over his antagonist As a matter of interest it is worthy to state that the Methodist Church was commenced at Oak Station with only five members," and before the debate was closed sixty accessions were made to the Church, making a total membership of sixty-five. Mr. B. is said to be a fine preacher, and is quite talented. Condition of Miss Griffith. Thi3 unfortunate lady, who was so badly burned, is still living. She dees not suffer very mueh, and is reported to be sinking Elowly. Done It. After the velocipcda i fever had entirely abated, and the j victims were convalescent, the City I Council of New Albany passed an , ordinance prohibiting velocipedes from being run oa the sidewalks.
