. AUGUST 5.1&C9' 'I Le Harp of a Tkonsand Strlnjjg.' The "Editor's Drawer" of the Augf. nst Harper republishes the famous old sermon "lie played on a harp of a thousand strings7' which is certainly good enough to be reprinted at least once every five or tea years, and so we imitate the example of Harper. SERMON. I rr ay'say to you, my brethering, that I am not an etlccated man. an' I trn not one o' them that blceves edeeation is necessary Jcr a Go?p!e minister, fur I bleeve the Lord cdecates.an' although I say it that oughtn't to gay it, yet in the State of Indianny, whar 1 live, thar s no man as gits a bigger congreratioa ncr what 1 git3. Thar may be some hero to-day, my brethering, as don't know what persuasion I am uv. Well, I may say to you mv brethering, that lama Hardshell Biptist; but;l' d .rather hev a hard shell as no shell at all. You see me here to-day, my brethering, drest up in fine close; you mout think I was proud, but I am not proud, my brethering; an' although I hava bin a preacher uv the goepil for twenty year, an' although I'm capting uv a fiat-boat that lies at your landing, I'm not proud, my brethering. I'm not gwine to tell you cdxacMy whar my tex may be found; suffice it te-say it's in the leds of the Bible, M an'you'l find it some?bar 'tween the fust chapter of the book of Generations an the last chapter of the book of Revolutions: an' if you'li go an' sarch the Scripturs you'll not only find my tex thar, but a great menny other teres as will do you good to read ; an' my tex whea j gu shill find it, you phill find it to read thus: - "And he played on a harp uv a thou sand strings sperits or just men made perfect." My tex, brethering, leads me to speak of sperits. Now thar's a great many kine3 of sperits in the world. In the fast p'ace, thar's the sperits as Bom folks call ghoits; theo thar's the sperits uv turpmgtime; an' then tbar'e the sperits as torn lolks call liquor, at i 1 ve got as food artikel uv their, kind uv t-pents on my flas-boat as ever was fetched down tbe MississiDpi lliver; but thar's a great many other kinds uv sperits, for the tex says: "'lie played on a harp uv a thousand strings sperits uv just men made perfeck.' JJui I'll tell you uv the kiod uv sperits as is raent in tho tex it's fire. That is the kind uv sperits as is ment in the tex, my brethering. Now, thar's a greatmany kinds ot fire in the world. In the first pace, thar's the common ; sort uv fire you light a pipe or ciear, with; an then thar a camnre ; nre before you're ready to fall back, an meuy other kinds uv fire; lor tbe tex says: "He played on a harDofa uH-sand -strings sperits uyjast men made per- , ieck." .-!. . ( ; i Bat I'll tell yoa the kind cy fire as , is ment in tho tex, my brethc ring it's hell fire! an' that's the kind cf fire as a great msny ot you'li come t ef you don't do better nor what you've been doin' for "He played on a harp uv a thousand strings-sperits of just men made perfeck." i Now the diffei ent sorts uv fire in the world may be likened unto the ' different persuasions in the world. In the fust place, wo have the 'Piscopalians, an' they're a highsailin' an' a high-falutin' set, and they may be 1'Lened unto a turkey-buzzard that flies up into the air, and he goes up and up till he looks no bigger than your finger-nail, an the fust thing you know hecums down an' down, an is a fillin'himelf on the'karkiss uv o dead hos3 by the side uv the road-and "Jle played on a harp uv a thou-s&od strings sperits oi jvat men made perfeck:" ' " , And then thar's the Methodis, an' they nay be likened unto the squir 1 runnin' up a tree; for the Hdathodis believes in gwioe o"n from one degree nv grace to another, an' finally on to perfcekshun: an' the squirrel goes up an' up, an' he junjp3 from lira' to liin , an' branch to branch, an' the -fust thingyou know he falls, an' down he comes, kerflumoiux; an' that's like . -he Methodis, for they is aliers' fall.in' from grace ah I Aud "lie played ou a harp of a ri.c-sand strings--sperits of just men made . "perfeck." And then, my brethering, thar's the Baptist ah ! and they hev bin likened unto a possum on a 'simmon-tree; an' the thunders may roll' an' 1 the airth may quake, but that possum clings still ah! An' you may shake one : foot loose, but tother's thar; an' you can shake all his feet loose, but he 3ps his tail around the lira',, au'j he clings fur ever ; for "Ho played on a ; harp uv a thou-snnl strings sperita : of just men mada perfeck." Stephen Allen' Fockct-ricce. In the nceket-bock of the Hon. Stephen Allen, who was drowned. from ou board the 11. Clay, was found a printed slip, apparently cut from a newspaper, of which the following is a copy. It is worthy to be put in every newspaper, and engraved on every young man's heart. Make few promises. Always speak the truth. Keep good company or none. ' Never speak evil of any one. jj-vo up to your engagements. i Be just before you are generous.' Never play at any game of chance. Drink PO kind of intoxicating liquors, , , (Jood character 13 above all things i else. Keep your own secrets if you h'avo any. Never borrow if you can possibly help it. Do not marry until' you are able to support a wife. Keep yourself innocent if you would be happy. Just before tne fruit begins to color, and when the fruit is ripe, and the paper is re moved, the design will appear in a fighter or different color from tne rest of the lruit; as for instance, it vue experiment is tried on a yellow-flesh ed peach with a red cheek, tne design will appear in gold, surrounded with red. How far dawn a Diver may go. The greatest depth to which a diver can descend with the greatest appliances of safety is about one hundred and sixty feet, and for ihis, a bunch of hundred weights must be disposed about his person. The average depth at which he can work comfortably is about ninety feet, which was near the depth at which the operations upon the Royal George were conducted. In the water, from sixty to seventy feet deep, the men can work for two hours at a time coming up for a ten minutes' rest, and doing a days work of six or seven hours. An English diver, encased in oneofSiebe's dresses, went down in the Mediterranean to a depth of one hundred and sixty-five feet and re. mained there for twenty-five minuter; and we have heard that Green, the American diver, inspected a wreck in one of tho Canadian lakes, at the depth of one hundred and se- enty feet; but his experience was enough to convince him that he could not work on it without danger of life. At this depth the pressure of water on tbe hands is so great as to force the bfood to the head and .bring on fainting fits, whiie the requisite volume of the air inside the dress to resist the outward pressure of the water is so great that it would speedily pufflcate. Means h8ve been tried to obviate these difficulties, but for the present a limit has been set to the extent to which man 'may. penetrate tha -sfcrets of the deep. ' An ingenious Italian workman has brought to England a sort cf armor dress, which would resist the pres-nre of water; but our submarine engineers think that this would not obviate the difficulties arising from the limits placed to human endurance. A New Dodge. A gentleman in-H tne yest xnd has discovered a way in which to keep water in cisterns icecold duriog an eatire season. He tried bis invention in his own cistern several weeks since. He put in it several hundred pounds ot ice. The ico has melted but very little since being put in, and the water has been ice cold ever since, and promises to remain so for the balance of the summer without the aid of any more ice. The gentleman who made the experiment says he has no doubt of its complete success, and claims that his invention when it comes into general use, will prove a great convenience to families and save much expense, reduciog ice bills at least onetbird. LOUISVILLE. Tho Courier- Journal . of Wednesday Bays: i Capt. Pink VarLle yesterday added another to the long line of thrillin? adventures aud narrow escapes which have diversified Lis career as pilot of the falls. He was ascending the falls in the pilot Louse tf the ttearner Mollie Ebert at G A. M , and finding her unable to stem tho current, was compelled to tie her to one of. the bridge piers in the Indiana chute and seek the assistance of a tow-boat. For this purpose be came up to the city, bringing with him two deck bands and a clerk of the steamer. Failing in his efforts to find an unemployed tug in port, he determined to try and bring his charge over tho worst part of the falls by getting her anchor up tbe river and using the capstan to aid the engines. He therefore hired two laborers and a skiff at the levee and started back to the boat, having five men in the skiff with him. The Mollie Ebert was lying where the current was strong and rough. When the skiff shot past the pier her crew were unable to catch hold of the mooring of tbe steamer, and so the crew of the latter threw them a hue which they caught. But the men on the steamer awkwardly checked the skiff, and brought her head round so suddenly that she careened and tilled, and the current brought fcuch power to bear upon her in that condition that the line was wrenched from the man holding tho skifl 's end of it. The lilted boat and its crew were then swept swiftly down the surging torrent. Acting on tho advice of Capt. Varble, they all got out and clung to the skiff. l)on they went at times losing hold and again recovering it by desperate exertions the vessel sometimes turning bottom up as they pitched into a boiling gulf, and sometimes rightiDg full of water. As they reached the turn above the big eddy a sudden pluDgo scattered them all again from the slrtff. Four of them', including Capt. Varble, regained the vessel, but the Captain was so exhausted that he could not reach any hold. One of the deck hands, a brave fellow, tried to secure the Captain's grasp, and, failing in that, said, " Catch hold of my collar, Captain! I will fitay with you to tho last, and then go under with you! The clerk, unable to reactx tbe skifl,
