-AUGUST 2. 1S59. HUMOROUS. A critic says of a certain singer "that she sin?s a few airs and puts on a great many." "Mamma!" said a precious little boy, who against his will, was made to rock the cradle of his baby brother, "If the Lord has any more babies to give away.don't.ycu take 'em." . .Recently a rector of a parish in Toledo Ohio, in catechising his Sunuy school, asked: "Where did tho wise men come from ?" Without a moment's hesitation the answer came Irom a little live-ycar old: "From Boston!" The father and mother of the little catechumen are natives" cf the Bay State. t An ingenious New York mechanic advertises that he manufactures "drums that cannot be beat." The style no longer requires the mostiashionable la ay to cnange her toilette more than twice a day at the mosc gay and aristocratic resorts. Shakespeare loved and wed a farmer's daughter. She was faithful to her vows, but we could hardly say the same of the great bard himself. Like most of the great poets, he showed too little discrimination in bestowing his affection on the other sex. . "Jim" has a percocious nephew, a lad just three years old. Playing with his kitten yesterday, Miss Kittcngofc litr back up" about something (kittens as pell as folks often get their backs up), and scampered over the floor. Little nephew was delighted, and sang out, "Look, ma, kitten's got 'e Grecian bendl" Not long since a youth, older in wit than years, after being catechised concerning the power of God, replied, "Ma, 1 think there's one thing God can't do." "What is it?" eagerly inquired the mother. "God can't make iiill Jones's mouth any bigger without setting his eai3 back." ; "Harry, you ought not to throw away nice bread like that; you may want it some day." "Well, mother, would I stand any better change of getting it then if I should eat it now?" . : The JIartfort Times make's the following singular announcement: "Persons troubled with cornscan find relief by calling on Mr. Seliger. Colt's band will be present and furnish good music." Said Lord John Kussell to Mr. Hume, at a social dinner: "What do you consider the object of legislation?" "The greatest good to the greatest number?" "What do you consider the greatest number?" continued his lordship. "Number one,"' was the commoner's prompt reply. Mr. Hume had probably been reading Burnham's history of the "Hen Fever." Aworldingwas once visited, in his illness, by a well-meaniDg but dolorous . clergyman, who disfigured his countenance and wore a face of perpetual mourning. As his sad visage appeared in the doorway, the sick man started up and exclaimed: " Why what's the. matter with you? , Yol look as if your religion didn't agree with you I" The editor of the Waterbury (Conn.) Anvrican telegraphed the othre day to Col. A. II. Fenu, at Plymouth: "Send us full particulars of the flood." Fcnn rerlieu: "You'll find them in Genesis ." Eev. .Moses Clampit, an eccentric preacher, was holding forth at Saata Clara vf.lley; a young man rose to go out, whin the preacher said: "Young mau, if you'd rather go to .hell than hear me preach, you may." The sinner stopped and rellected a moment, and then saying respectfully, "Well, 1 believe I would," went cn. Anecdote of Jefferson the Third. Jefferson the Third was too improvident end careless in business matters to succeed in ' management. This hereditfjy misfortune, which at last bad thj effeat of closing his Washington theater, was offset by the ino3t complacent acceptation in the world. The day after his failure in Washington a personal friend called at Jefferson's house to offer condolence, lie was informed that Mr. Jefferson had gone out fishing. Trouble! with an apprehension lest Jefferson, overcome' by his losses, had resolved to do away with himself, the friend went in search of him. lie found the ex-manager quietly reclining oa the banks of the Urandywine, his sketch-book lyicg open at his side and his fishing-rod stretched out over the wafer. "Why, Jefferson," asked the friend, in surprise, " how can you devote yourself to the pleasures of art when your recent misfortunes ought to be driving you to the verge of dispair?" "Confound it, old boyl" was the answer: " I have lost everything, audam so poor, as a cocsequence, that 1 can't even afford to let anything troublo me." From Josei-ii Jefferson, in the August number of Lippincotl's Magazine. A Callfornlaa'sldc or Greenbacks. A. D. Richardson, in a California letter to the New York Tribune, 'tells the following story: The hostess at a house where I dined the other day came to California when a mere child. She remembers absolutely nothing of her old home. "Do you really ue pennies in the States?" she asked. "Yes," "They are made ofcoDner. aro thev cot?" "es." "Have you any greenbacks with you? I never stw but one, and I have forgotten how that looked." I succeeded in fishing up from the bottom of a pocket one crumbled twentyfive cent note of our postal currency - She turned it over and over with keen curiosity. "It seems very strange to me that lhi3 should be mocey, she said. "It don't look like money,' "What docs it look like?" "Well, (hesitaticjr, and with the utmost sin cerity)" it looks like a labei for an oyster can!" THE CELEBRATED

FLUID EXTRACT BUCHU.
'.The XCilne.yTlie kidueys are two in mirobei, situated at the upper pa: t of the loin, surrounded by tat, aud cooslstiusr of three parts, viz. : the Anterior, the Interior, and the Exterior. The anterior absort3. Interior consists or tissues or veins, which serve ns a deposit for t)ia urine and convey it to the exterior, xue exterior is a conductor also, terminating in a single tube, nod called the Ureter. The ureters are connected witli the bladder. Tho bladder is composed of various coverings or tissues, divided into parts, viz. : the Upper, the Lower, the Nervons, and the Mucous. The upper expels, the lower retains. Many have a desire to urinate without the ability; others urinate without the ability to retain. This frequently occurs In children. To cure these affections, we must bring into action the muscles which are engaged in their various functions. If they are neglected, Uravel or Dropsy may ensue. The reader most alsi bo made aware, that, however slight may be the attack, it is sure to afiect, the bodily health and mental powers, as our flesh and blood are supported from tlie.se sources. Gout, on Hhkumattsm. Pain occurring in the iolns is indicative of the above diseases. They occur In persons disposed to acid stomach, and chalky concret'.ons. The Qbaveli. Tfce gravel ensues from neglect or improper treatment of the kidneys. These organs being weak, the water is not expelled from the bladder, but allowed to remain ; It becomes feverish, and sediment forms. It is from this deposit that the stone Is formed, ana gravel ensues. DropoY is a collection of water In some parts ot the body, and bears different names, according to the parts affected, viz.: when generally diffused over the body, it is caiied Anasarca; when of the abdomen. Ascites; when of the chest, Hydrothorax. - Tjbe ATJf ent. Ilelmbold's liUhly concentrated compound Extract Bucbu is decidedly one oi the best remedies for dis- ! eases Of ihe bladder, kidneys, gravel. ! dropsical swellings, rheumatism, and gouty affections. Under this head we have arranged JJysuria, or difficulty and pain in posing water, scanty secretion or ! small and freqaent discharges of water; -trangury, or slopping of water: Hennatuna, or bloody urme; ioutand Rheumatism of the kidneys, without any change In quantity, but Increase of color, or dark waier. It was always highly recommended by the late Dr. Thysick, In these affections. This medicine increases the power of dlgeetlon, and excites the absorbents Into healthy exercise, by which the watery or calcareous deposition", and ail unnatural enlargement, a well as pain and Inflammation, are reduced, and It is taken by men, women, and children. Directions for use and diet accompany. Piiii.ASEi.FHiA, PA., Feb. 25, 1867. H. T. Hembolb, Druggist: Dear Sh 1 have been a sufferer, for upward of twenty years, with gravel, bladder, and kidney airecttons, during which time I have used various medicinal preparations, and been-under the treatment of j the most eminentpnyslclans, experiencing bat little relief. Having seen your preparations extensively advertised, I consulted with my iaruiiy physician lu regard to using your Extract Buchu. I did this because I had used all kinds of advertised remedies, and had found them worthless, and some quite injurious; in fact, I despaired of ever getting well, and determined to use no remedies herealter unless I kuew of the Ingredient. It was this that prompted me to use your remedy. As you advertised that it was comnosed of buchu, cubebs, and juniper berries, it occurred to me and my physician as an excellent combination, and, wita his advice, after an examination of the article, and rnnkiilMnff acrulu wif li tlia .1 - .m Iu , T .... .. - eluded to tiy it. I commenced its use about eight months ago, at which time I was co nu Lieu to my room, iiora the first bottle I was astonished and gratified at the beiicticial effect, and after using it throe weeks was able to walk out. I felt much like writing you a full statement of my case at that time, but thought my improvement might only lie temporary, and lucreiore conciuueu to ueter ami see it it would effect a perfect cure, knowing then it would bo of greater value to you, and more satisfactory lo me. I am now ablo to report that a cure Is effected, after using the remedy for five IUOUIUS.
