,.JU Y 18, ISO". From tte New York Citlzeu. Fashion Gossip. Pink is worn much more than usual. For two or three seasons it has kept the back-groun, while Metternich green, straw color, and black have been the most frequent colors out, and the bright, lovely pink, the color of a prairio rose now in vogue was only seen next the dark hair of some country girl, who knew not what was fashionable,, but only what was pretty. A beautiful dancing ; dress is of tulle over white goat's hair, sheeny as sott silk, short, of course, with live narrow flounces of tulle between, which are notched with ruffles of pink silk. A short round tunic comes over the hips, but does not meet at the belt ; over this is a smaller one of pink silk, and a still smaller one of tulie again. The waist is a fan of silk in the back over a body of tulle with straps pass- ? ing over the shoulders, and meeting in front at the belt with gradated ruffles of tulle interleaved with pink, forming the upper part of the body, and giving charming fullness to the figure; the sleeves are puffs of tulle over pink silk, Maria Theresa style, with deep laca ruffles; if the arms are not fine, a close tulle sleeve with very fine pleats is worn Irom elbow to waist, finishing with a deep ruffle to match the upper one. A dress of white crape has a court train, covered with four flounces rounding toward the waist, each bound with pink ribbon stitched on with narrow black velvet. The front has rows of pink ruches, with white interlaced, and a black velvet run in the center. The chemisette is white lace, and the bodice white, with pink and black ruches .across the. bust, gathered on the shoulder by a bow of pink ribbon and black velvet, each two inches. A fine black grenadine is trimmed for evening in a novel fashion, with plain train, the front crossed by flounces headed by narrow pinked ones of gray white silk, with black filk fold across. Over the train falls a wide border, fifteen inches wide, in puffs hold by large rosettes of grenadine with white whalebone thistles in the center. The waist has a pinked ruffle of white silk round the shoulders, forming a shallow bertha below, which others descend in points on the front. The sleeves are in large puffs on the upper side with fbld- of silver-gray silk centered with black between the puffs', and large lozeoees of silk stretched on the shoulders and wrist. Wide tulle quillings from the finish at throat aud hand. This is designed for l'ght mourning, but may easily be adapted to ordinary wear, and be made a very striking costume by adding red roses as a garniture. Black grenadine Is made over dresses in colors, bright blue or sultan preferred. The silk dress is short and flounced; the black, with double rurhVs, is looped above! it to show nearly half the silk skirt iu front. The sleeves have a erenadiue puff to the ellow, below which descends the coat si ieve of silk. The throat and sleeve are trimmed with bright silk rufflos. Flounces and ruches of silk grenadine or mixed goods, of which the warp is silk, are always pinked, notch ed or raveled, and the eagc evtiity cut to show a short . fringe. This is more convenient than the process of binding thirty, yards of ruffling f. r every dress, which is too much of a tax in a world where art is loDg and . time fleeting, and there are new magazines with leaves uncut very month. Where the suit is compo-ed of two colors, the ruffles are interleaved in the two tints. For thin organdies a pretty trimming is a white muslin '.. ruffli bax-ploatcJ on a plain inch ribbon, the color of the prevailing shade of the dress. A linen lawn with indistinct small figures of light purple is made a very pretty dress in which to welcome one s f amily at evening by trimming the t uic with a wide boxpleated ruffle of the same, stitched in the center with knots of No. (J lavender ribbon every few inches between the pleats with narrower ribbon run in and out of little bars round the neck and shoulders. Make the sleeves plain, coat shape, with deep cuffs edged with narrow Valenciennes and ribbon like the neck. A rainbow neck ribbon gives the relief needed to the pale purple hue, which is of nil ethers most monotonous without such touches. The newest parasols have a ruche inside the edge, and straight polished sloping handles of rosewood tipped with gold plate, of gilt or ivory. He- : ceutly a stock of fiue ivory handled parasols in silk was shown at $12 each. They were fashionable in every respect, large and broad, white, lined with all color. Knglish silk rain umbrellas are $6. Pongee umbrellas, with thick bamboo handles linht as pith, are from $4 upward. These also are white, lined with color. Parasols to match the suit worn are not such a success as they promised to be except for those one-ideaed people who would like their hair and eyebrows dyed check or lavender to suit their dress. The white umbrella lined with the color which agrees with the complexion of the wearer, is har- . monious with any toilet. A novelty is the uiar-iboat parasol covered en tirely with down; it looks like carrying a snowbank or dismissed eloud over the head. The price of the one shown, which was really good size, was 22, and it was the most luxurious cheap thing imaginable. Ladies in the country have taken to wearing the white cambric sun-hat, which are so light and fresh. It is not difficult to make them with a pattern, and they are easily cleaned with a brush and soapsuds. The Century Plant. The Rochester Express says the main stalk or flower stem of the century plant now iu bloom in that city, is titteen feet blue inches high, and beds fair to reach over twenty feet. It has twenty branches, and buds which will be branches, now visible, which are to bear the clusters. The lower branches are' about fifteen inches in length and five inches apart where matured, and they grdaa!ly shorten until they reach tha top. The lowermost arm is eleven feet six inches from the ground, and there are one hundred and five distinctly formed buds in this cluster, and more may develop before it attains its lull perleetinn, It is estimated that there will le filteen hundred flowers ou the plant. In other plants which have flowered in Euglaud and elsewhere, these arms when lully developed have m-iasured mur to six and one lialt leet in length, and the clusters of flowers from fourteen, to eighteeu inches in diameter. The single flower of itself is not handsome. It is only four or five inches in length, and probably of a greenish yellow color, but very fragrant. Bat the ereat beauty is the manner of ri jweriti and the wonderful pyrmidal ca.-vJe'.abr. hape or lorra which it. a'lains whtu in full bloom, the larg'i .!ns:trs arid numerous flowers iu tucb, which will -appear at the ends of
tha &?fisa fi bgacaliCi, th Uttt aaea bi2g tha longasr, and gradually shortening iu pyrmidal form till they reich the top, where there will be a huge cluster of flowers, probably a9 large as a half bushel. - i This particular plant was brought from Canandaigua to Rochester thirteen years aro, and lias been in the possession of Messrs. frost. & Co. ever since. Its aee is very Accurately known, having been purchased in 1S09 by the lae lion. Johu Ureig, of Canandaigua, aud owned by him until 1850', when it was purchased by the Messrs. Frost, making it about seventy years of age. It has thirty leaves, averaging four and a half to six feet in length, of a bluish green color, finely marked with yellow stripes, the leaves being six to nine inches in width, and three to five inches thick at the base. The plant now shows the pyramidal shape and manner of flowering, and is well worth visiting at the present tim , as the rapid change, which will soon take place when it comes in flower, will cause many to regret, who will only see it at that time, that they had not seen it before it became so fully developed, so they could anticipate the change which will ensue.
