The members of the C.ty Council were in session as a Board of Equalization yesterday, and are going over the personal returns nrst. oome discussion ensued in regard to the question whether the Board could increase the amount returned in a schedule that had been flworn to. We believe that it was generally admitted that in eases where it was thought a sufficient value had Dot been placed upon personal property, the Board had the right to examine, under oath, the persons who returned the schedules. We believe this is the viejp of the case that has been taken heretofore by the Equalization Board. Base Ball. The "First Nine" played the "Field" yesterday, and carried the whole game by storm. Thera was some very fine playiog on both sides, but when the First Nine found out what an easy thing it was to beat their opponents, they did not pat in their V best licks." The game on Saturday, between our Club and the , Bluff City Club, of Memphis. promises to be an interesting one, and we feel satisQed that a b:g crowd will be ia attendance. A street railroad to the ball-ground would be very convenient, and would induce a large attendance when games are played. S7 We have received a nice assortment, of. Initial Paper. While a man lives in this world and is able to keep up appsarauces it is all right, but uo sooner is he dead than a scramble takes place lor what he leaves behind This has been the case with the effects lof t by John McManaman, who died list Monday. His stotk ot clothing was levied on yesterday by the Sheriff, to satisfy the claims of certain creditors, and tha old man's body was hardly cold before the squabble began It seems that claims are due certain clothing men to the amount of $2,000 or $3,t00, aud before Mr. McMana man was buried suit was brought to take rxtssessiun of the stock in his store. A vast crowd was attracted on First Street, yesterday, when Sheriff Milier levied on the goods, and the afftir wa3 the general topic of conver sation last evening. There are other points in connection with the matter but we shall not discuss them at nresent. We presume the matter will be settled in the courts. Lovers of fine horses should use tho Jockv Club Envelope. Can be bought at the Journal Office. ; Extension of ms Street Rail road. By the first of January, 1870, according to tho charter, the Street Railroad Company will have to build another mile of railroad. There are two routes proposed, and it has not yet, to a ccrtainty.been decided which route will be taken. A majority of the Directors, wo understand, are in favor of ruuning it up Second Street, while the minority are in favor of Eighth Street. The road can be secured for Eighth Street provided a sufiicient amount of bonus can bo raised to induce the Board to locVe it on that route, but so fr as we can Karn only $300 have been offered. Ti e decision in regard to the two routes will probably not be made until September. The Graves op the Federal Dead. M. E. Irving, an agent of the Government, is now in the city for tho purpose of removing t.he remains of the Federal soldiers buried at Oak Hill Cemetery; those buried at Newburgand elsewhere in this vicinii3 to the new lot in Oak Hill Ceme tery, ceded to the general Government reoently by the City Council. Mr. Irviug is accompanied by bis Superintendent, II, II. Beaven, and the work will, it is expected, be commenced on Friday or Saturday. If any person knows of any solitary graves occupied by Federal soldiers, in any part of the country adjaeeat to Evansville, they are requested to in form the agent or Col. P. Hornbrook of the fact, that they may be removed to the Cemetery and placed beside their companions in arms. 2?" Carter's Ink is the best in this market, for sale at the Journal Office. The Heat. Talk about warm weather and heat down South as much as you. please, but wo believe that Evansville is as warm as any other locality. We noticed yesterday what we consider as very strong-proof of the intense heat this season. At the intersection of Fourth and Oak Streets an oak gunwale that extend-) across Fourth Street, and which is fully six inches in thickness, has bacome so much warped by the sun that it turns up at one end about one foot with a prospect of a further rise. This, we think, ia a pretty strong " draw," and as the warped end sticks up in the centre of the street, it should he fixed at once. Let the Street Commissioner attend to the matter. Fire Cisterns The City Council have ordered this year, so far, thirteen new cisterns to bo built in various parts of the city. This is highly commendable, as iu many localities the scarcity of water would cause serious loss in case of fires. When the new cisterns are completed and filled with water our city will be in a good con- - dition so far as cisterns are concerned. ivtuuimuu -ioauje uouse on Main Street, between Seventh and - Eighth, formally occupied by Mollie Manning, and which was partially destroyed by the fire on the morning of the 25th of June, is being rebuilt. This building is owned by George Grandgen, of Stringtown, and was in sured in the Evansville Insurance Company.

Among other signs t.f rapid advancement, we notice the merchants of that city are fully aware of the great advantages and protits oi tne louacuo trade, and are leaving, no stone unl;ir?e share of it. We visited La masco yesterday afternoon, searching for items, but eoull cot fiod any The only thing worthy of note is the feeling of the people in regard to sidewalk improvements, aud we heard some hard swearing against the rule of the Council iu regard to petitions The old custom in : regard to side walks has.been to report to the Coun cilman of the ward where a new side walk should be put down, or an old one repaired, aud tne u juocumati would visit the locality and see what was needed, and brmr the matter before the Couucil. Sidewalks are needed all over town, and it petitions have to be presented in each ca-e, it will require the labor of an extra clerk to fila an I take care of the petitions. Lot , the petition rule be discontinued, aud lei us have our pavements put in as good condition a3 possible. When a Councilman asks that a sidjwalk be put down at a certain place that is pretty god evidence that it is needed. Otto Prailllin, Real Estate Appraiser, has about completed his labors. The real estate of the city is assessed at about $2,500,000, against $12,033,053 last year. Tho cause of tho decrease is owing to the fact that real estate was assessed entirely too high last season, especially in the outside en largements. The-valuation of prop erty in the outskirts has been reduced, aud in the Donation Enlargement, or Old Plan, embracing the business part of the city, it has been increased. It is probable, however, that the assessments made by the Appraiser will be increased in a large number of cases, so that the present valuation will not bo apt to fall short of $10,000,000. Gone West. Hon. W. E. Niblack and lami'y left Viuceanes on Mon day for the far West. They expect to join Hon.Ttios. A.Hendericks and Hon. Joseph E. McDonald with their families at Omaha, and will perhaps go through to Sq,n Francisco. m Large Funeral. We learn from r IP IT i 1 a gentleman troui terre iiaute mat the remains of John Petri, who was murdered in his owu liquse in Terre Haute, on Sunday, was followed to their last resting p ace, yesterday, by an ioinieuse funeial jirocession, in cluding eighty-nine vehicles and a great throng on foot. The most intenso excitement, in reference to recent events, still prevails in that city, with an almost universal demand that full justice shall be meted out to the assassins. t : ' Bad Boys. Some bad boys in Lamasco have a habit of placing small stones on the track of the street railroad, making it rough traveling and frequently causing the cars to be thrown eff the track lhe drivers are special police, and they ought to arrest the young scalawags Cheap. We learn that Fred. P. Straub & Co. have purchased from Charles Jenkins the business hou-e and grouud at present occupied by Elliott & Co., the auetioneers, for $10,000 cash. The lot is 1SJ by 150 feet, j,ud the building i3 a four-story brick edifice. This is considered a bargain by real estate men.

" " ;. , , . . . I On tho 5th day of August, next. the voters of Vanderburgh County are required to decide whether or not ?242,000 shall be granted to the Evansville, Carmi and Paducah Rail road. Before the vot on this question is taken, it were necessary to show to the-citizeua of Evansville, upon whom the larger part of this amount will fall, that the terminus of the roaa at Evansville is such as to promote the interests of the city. In order to show clearly on ! what conditions wa are prepared to vote in lavor ot the proposition, we have taken the following resolutions: 1. lhe new road shall not be brought in connection with the Crawfordsville Road by a common depot. Should this be desired." then the Crawfordsville Road shall pay onethird, our merchpats one-third, and city and county the remaining oneibird ot the required ZlZ,i)W. J. lhe new road shad have a dis tinot depot, which shall be locate at some point between First Avenue and Salt Wells. If the depot be so located, we shall vote for the grant without any proviso whatever. Our reasons for the nrst resolution: Should the road be brought in such connection with the Crawfordsville Rood, the track would describe a large semi-circle around the north western portion of the city, which therefore would derive no profit from the road. The commerce would concentrate around the Crawfordsville depot, and only the smallest part of the city, its most eastern end, would be a winner; and a new source of speculation would be opened to purchasers of Longworth's "Tract at our cost. Besides, however, the Crawfordsville Ko3d again secures its monopolv, and the completion of the Straight Line Railroad is again placed bevoud exoectation. It the Company of the Evansville, Carmi & Paducah Railroad insist upon a plan of this kind, then let those more especially in'erested take their due share in the construction oi me roau. i . . - . c . i i We do not desire to ray exorbitant taxes to further the interests of a few. aud see the example repeated, which the Kvansville, Henderson & .Nash ville Railroad has already placed be fore our eves. Lmr reasons tor tho second resolu tion : Evansville can only advance in population and extent if the dep.it bo locate 1 iu the atoie mentioned direc tion. The commerce which this road brings us will then pass through the North western part ot the city, and this part offers the greatest advanta pes to manufacture and commerce on account ot its situation along the river and creek. Here the profits derived from " the road would not so iuto the hands of the speculator, but of the citizen By locating the depot in this part of the city r.vansvule receives a new uoint ot eeutrahzation. and the more such points we have the more will the city prosper. i he interests or the whole county will bo preserved if the road termi nates as required by our second reso lutioa. The farmer gains only if the city, as a whole, pio-;pers, .receives little or no benefit, however, if the I fe road operates tor the interests ot a ew. K Evansville, July 11. 1SG9. A Plea fok the Flower-Beds. A little Miss sends us the following: CIOOD ADVICE. I was glad, Mr. Editor, to see your notice in yesterdays JOURNAL, in reg-ird to those pretty things called flowers. I hope the young Misses will hoed the call and not wait until school takes up before attending to the wants of those charms which an ali-wie l'rovidence has eeen lit to strew along the pathway of his crea tures, and by which the mind is brought -to contemplate those ever-l.-istiu? flowers that shall bloom throughout the ares of eternity. Now, Mr. Editor, 1 don't want to be tiresome, but as a lover of flowers, 1 should like to see those weeds de stroyed, and those pretty flower beds cleaned, and made comfortable by the time school takes up asain. A Florist. A Fine Point. A singular case will probably be brought up in the Criminal Court this morning, involving a very fine point in law. Some time since a negro was convicted oi larceny, but being under age, the jury directed that he should be sent to the House of Correction for two years. On application being made to the House of Correction, the officers are informed that the institution is full. and that they cannot take charge of the prisoner. The negro's attorney has made a motion that his client be discharged, on the ground that te sentence of the jury cannot be ex ecuted on the prisoner. Family ltow. We learn tuat a family fight occurred at the house of a man whose name we suppress, who re -ides on the corner of Fulton Ave nue and Water Street, Household furniture and a small boy were bandled quite lively. To be Extended. It is very likely that Jacob S. Lowry will be granted un'il the first of October to complete the work of bowldering Locust Street. The river is so high that the bowlders, cannot be procured. We presume that the work ou Main Street will probably be delayed" for tbe same reason. - o A Card, Evansville, July 14, 1SC9. Editors of the Evansville Journal: Gentlemen in tins mornings issue ot your paper, mere appears a paragraph relating to appearing dis ¬ crepancies existing Detw-3en surveys made by me and those ot Jlr. Bate man, rny immediate predecessor. In reply, I have only to say that I have never differed in lines or grades with Wm. M. Walker or P. II. Wroodard, who were the original ' Surveyors of the city prior to my installation in office, and that all such matters are capable of demonstration. Whether 1 am right or wrong (believing as I do the former) I will say that I will pay the necessary expenses of a competent civil engineer to come here and settlo the matter. City Attorneys may be very good in their places, but matters relating to lines of street and lots can be ascertained without reference to the legal profession. , With reference to grades, I will merely state that a3 long as the level of Water Strees and tho "old" grade map remains, no difference ought to occur without the knowledge of the "Council.''
