Besides, it will be go nice to travel over on a velocipede. Coming in. Almost Another Fiee. About
11 o'clock on Sunday uight, afire wa3 discovered in the stable of Charley Smith, who keep3 the Depot House on Main Street, between Seventh and Kighth Streets. Tbc fire was discovered by Mr. .Smith's daughters, who saw the light from an up stairs window. Mr. Smith immediately put the fire out by scattering it with his hamis and feet, and in po doing got his hands burned. This fire was no doubt the woik of some scoundrels who wauted to commit robbery. A few ;..f0a mnro nml a roost destructive 1X1 I U IA a.uvw conflagration would have ensued, involving the loss of property worth many thousands of dollars. Another stable was set on fire in the rear oF a building on Walnut Street, opposite the Ninth Street School House, but it evidently did not get a good start, as it went out. A portion of the board in the alley were found in a charred condition yesterday morniDg. Our city is full of thieves and in cendiaries, and a close watch will have to be kept for the rascals. A dose of cold lead would teach the vil lains a lesson. A Good Joke on a Justice Ben. Stinson, Esq., who in his capacity Justice of the Peace, occasionally performs the maniie cetemony for gushing lovers, was the victim of a practical joke a short time ago. A man called on him a few nights since, and rtauested him to come to his house and marry him and his lady love. Of course Ben. went, and per formed the ceremony in his best stvle. After the fuarriage, the happy groom called the 'Squire out and told him that times were very hard, and that a dollar was all he coald aSord to pay, at the same time handing him the money, which the 'Squire pocket ed without looking at it. After he weut home, he thought he would take a look at his dollar, but lol he was a a victim of "misplaced confidence, for he discovered that the man had only given him a "fifty cent cur rency," and a last counterjeit at. that The Justice thought it was a good joke, and we think so, too. Those Bills.. The City Council has had before it for some timo pa3t, the bills of various physicians for vaccinating 2.S00 children, at ten cents each, and a few yards of names were examined last night. The order of the Board of Health was that all indigent persons who were not able to nay would be vaccinated at the expense of the city. Among the names on the list presented last night were those of persons who are worth thousands of dollars, and the Coun cil very properly declined paying the bills of such persons. The Doctors were ordered to make their bills over again, and were directed to charge only for those who are unable to pay. Grand Illumination and Select Concert. It will be a real pleasure to leave the sweltering atmosphere of the city to-night and spend a couple of hours at tho Artesian Springs Park, to witness the grand illumination aud listen to the admirable music of the EvaoBville Orchestra. The air at the park is always pure, and comparatively cool, and it will be a relief and a delight to spend the evening there. The Street Railroad Company will render every possible accommodation to those who attend the concert. Personal. We had the pleasure yesterday, of meeting iu the city, C. H. Haight, Es.q., representing the well known firm of N. Coronna & Co., Bankers and Commission Merchants of Memphis. Mr. Haight gives his especial attention to the forwarding department, and has shipped over 27,000 bales of cotton this season to K. Dunkerson & Co., agents of the South Shore Fast Freight Line in this city. He left for Chicago and the East last evening. Geo. Wolflin, of Mt. Vernon, and ex-Mayor Beck, of Shwneetown, were in the city yesterday. Not a Unit. The members of the City Council don't exactly seem to f aree in regard to 6idewalk improveuv nt? and are pretty equally divided ,uk question. One side. wants petitior.3 presentea lor siaewaiic im provements, while the other party don't believe in that way of doing business. The members ought to settle the point one way or the other. There are arguments in favor of both sides, but we believe the wants of the public at large will be benefitted by doing away with the " petition busi ness," because when some old fogies own whole blocks in a different part of the city from which they reside, thev don't care whether the other people ever have any sidewalks, and would never petition for the same We are in favor of the Council ordering nevf biaewaiKs, ana caving oja T 11 . 1 1 f - .15 ones repaired, without waiting for petitions. Our doctrine is, the "great est good to the greatest number." xiie school Iards. it was sug gested to us by a gentleman, yesterday evening, to call the attention of the school teachers to the condition of the flowers in the upper school yards. A small amount of weeding and hoeing will put the grounds in good condition and give the beautiful flow ers a chance to bloom. Hia j(jea js not a bad one, and it is a pity for the flowers to be left uncared for during the Summer vacation. We should think the old scholars would take pride enough in their old play ground to look after their floral favorites. The Vincenues, liko the Louisville papers, are mad because their old borough was not visited by the earthquake tho other day. It is only live towns, like San Francisco, St. Louis and New Albany, that the earthquake condescends to visit. AT. A. Lulger. Why do you omit Evansville, where we had the real genuine article, a regular quaking earthquake?

Considerable discussion ensued, when Mr. Wiltshire moved the bills be laid on the table. Mr. Semonin moved to refer the bills back to the Doctors, to be made out in accordance with the order or the Board of Health, authorizing the same. Mr. Semonin's motion prevailed. Mr. Steinbach reported that lots six and seven, block 34. Eastern En largement, had sufficient water on them to float several alligators, and said they ought to be filled up. Ou motion of Mr. Doughty, they were ordered to be fiiled. Mr. Hopkins, from a special com mittee to examine into the expediency of grading Second Street from Powell to tho boundary line, reported that the street should be graded between College and Cowan Streets. The City Surveyor stated that no grade had ever beeu established above Gum Street, and after considerable discussion, the matter was laid over for further consideration. On motion. First btreet, between Vine and Division, was ordered to be repaired. Vm. llunnell asked to be relieved as surety on a certain bond. The Council had no jurisdiction in the matter, and took no action. Mr. John Schubert made a complaint iu regard to a discrepancy in surveys made by Batemen and Saunders in Archer's Addition. Mr. Hopkins moved that a committee of three be appointed to confer with the City Attorney, and ascertain, in cases like these, whose survey was the correct one, each being, at the time the surveys were made, legally elected City Surveyors. The motion was agreed to, and Messrs. Hopkins, Semonin and Wiltshire were made the Committee. ' Mr. Doughty also made a similar complaint in regard to some property owned by Mrs. Lovell, which was referred to the same committee. The bond or James Parfett, cistera contractor, with Asa Iglshart and Wm. Lockyear as" sureties, was read and approved. Joseph Stahlhcefer reported $213 for outside collections for the past two weeks at the Upper Market. In response to a petition numerously signed, a fire cistern was ordered to be built near bt. Mary s Uatnolic Church, on Cherry Street. Also the following nre cisterns were ordered to be built: two in the Ninth Ward and two in the hirst Ward, to be located by the Chief of the Fire Department and the Councilmen of the Wards, and the Clerk was directed to advertise for bid3 for building the same. A sidewalk of class JNo. J was. or dered to be put down on tho east side of Walker Street, between Third an 1 Fourth .Streets; also the owuers ot Lots 14. 15. 16. 17. 18. 19. 20. 21. 22 and 23, iu Block 13, Fourth Enlarge ment, were ordered to bring the side walk to the proper grade and put down a sidewalk of class No. 2 thereon. A. petition was received from John W. Scott, asking that the grade be established at the corner of the canal and Fourth Avenue, and requesting that a committee be appointed to look into the matter. Wiltshire, Orr and Doughty were appointed the com mittee. Mr- S'einback moved that the side walks on the south side of Canal Stree', from Fifth to Seveuth, be repaired. Lost. The two brst blocfcs on eycamorc Street were accepted by the Council, they having been brought to the proper grade. A committee was appointed to ex amine the two ne xt squ ires. On motion, the Chiet ot the Dire Department wa ordered to go to the Ninth Street School House yard, and make arrangements to use the water for fires in the cisterns in the school yard. On motion, the contractor for the work on Seventh Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, was ordered to complete the work. The wharf reports for several weeks were as follows: Sam. Havlin, $123 75; Phy. 1). Viets,$2G2 03. Jacob S. Lowry asked that the time for completing the work of bowldering Locust btreet be extended until the first of October, because bowlders cannot be obtained. Action was postponed until next meeting. A petition was received, asking that Ninth Street and Tenth Street he opened from Harriet to Washington Streets. Referred to a Committee consisting of Wiltshire, Stumpf and Steinbach. A petition from citizens of the Fitth Ward asking that a nuisance he abated at the corner of Fifth and Division Streets, was referred to the Committee on Nuisances. A petition asking for a brick sidewalk on Main Street, beyond Eighth was laid over one week. On motion the Council adjourned. Just So. The price charged by Mr. Robert Boyd, of this city, for the plans and drawing of the Ninth Street school building, in this city, was $250, and we understand the building to be erected in Henderson is not designed to be as large cr a3 elegant. It is more than probable that the people of Henderson would have saved money by having had their drawing done here. - Prompt. We called attention in yesterday's Journal to the fact that First Street, in front of the Adams Express office needed repairing, and we are pleased to report ttyit the matter was promptly attended to yesterday. Going John S. Hopkins, Esq., will go to Terre Haute this evening, to examine tho hook and ladder apparatus recently purchased by that city. If they are of the right kind, he will probably recommend the purchase of the same kind for Evansville.

A week ao to-day two men, good citizens, were shot down in cold blood, by a so-styled policeman. On Sunday John Petri, a worthy citizen. discovered a robber and thief in his house. He had robbed the mon?y drawer. Petri found him under s bed in daylight, and made him come out and disgorge. Suddenly he drew a pistol and shot Petri, inflicting two serious wounds, from the effects of which it is feared he will not recover The assassin was captured and lodged in jail. Just before the train left yesterday, a large crowd was gathered about the jail, and it is probable that Terre Haute has, ere now, -been rid of two precious villains the assassin of Petri, and the would-be assassin of C. W. Brown and Major O. J Smith. New Firm. II. T. JLOOAI, notices. Dr. J. White at the Sherwood House till the 10th or September. We refer our readers to a notice of Dr. J. White, in another column of our journal, published a short time after Dr. White's visit to our city some years ago: y' Dr. White." We have been been called on by several persons who have been benefitted by his remedies,
to express their gratitude through our columns. Several severe cases of chronic disease of various kinds are reported to us as having been cured or permanently relieved. A friend who has suffered for many years from inveterate dyspepsia, with all its con comitant affections, tells us that he has beeiy completely cured. A lady who has been solely afflicted for years with chronic pectoral afflictions and distressme cough, deems herselt cured by Dr. White's remedies. beveral cases of scrofulous affections and white swellings have found relief under the Doctor's 2are. A variety of other cases are reported to us, too numerous to mention, which we have been desired to notice, lhe Doctor s visit here appears to have been a for tunate one tor himself as well as his patients." .. Also, the following from the Hen derson Weekly Reporter: , We have had an opportunity ot examining his testimonials anu pri vate letters, which are lrom the high est authority, and we have no hesi tancy in saying to the afflicted that they need have no scruples in placing the most implicit confidence in him as a physician. We regard him as a high toned gentleman, and teel cunndent that ho would be the last man to impose upon the afflicted.
