The engines were out ou short notice, and at the corner of Second and Main Streets, steamers Nos. 1 and 2 collided. The only- damage sustained was the breaking of the tongue in No. 2. The alarm of fire was rung about nine o'clock last night, caused by the burning of a stable belonging to Jacob Dennis, whose house is situated on Cherry Street, between Sqventh and Eighth. Tho engines were on hand i a very fair time, but No. 2 being the nearest, got water ou first, and the services of the other steamers were not required. The stable of Mrs. Andrews, across the alley from Dennis, was on fire, but the flames were extinguished before much dam ace was done. The loss of Dennis will probably amount, to $250, tin which, so far as we could ascertain there was no insurance. It is supI posed that the stable was set on fire J by some villainous scoundrels. It may be possible that he was only putting on style Sunk and Baised. The ice boat. which was being filled with ice at the wharf, on Friday night, or rather Saturday morning, was nearly leaded, it was discovered to be in a sinking condition, and settled down till it took considerable water. A Weather Guage. We have had so much rain lately, when it was not needed, that many of our readers have taken great interest in "the weather. We clip the following in teresting item from an exchange, with the suggestion that these who are in terested in the weather give it a trial: A cup ol coffte is a sure barometer, if you allow the sugar to drop to the tottom of the cup and watch the bub bles arbe, without disturbing the cotfee. If the bubbles collect in the middle, tho weather will be fine; if they adhere to the cup, forming a ring, it will be ra"inv, aud if the bubbles separate without a&miniog arjy fixed posi tion, changeable weather may be expected. A salt-water bath at the Artesian Springs Park is a real luxury these days, when tho mercury is ranging above 90. . ? . , , . Big Gooseberries.
